When tragedy strikes, where do we turn? The brutal murder of a young Ukrainian refugee and the shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk have left many questioning how hope can survive in such troubled times. These events shake us to our core, yet they also highlight something vital – darkness and hatred may be relentless, but so is the light of faith.

Hope isn't merely wishful thinking or passive optimism. It's a deliberate, daily choice – a catalyst for resilience that transforms our perspective even when headlines threaten to crush our spirit. Drawing from Romans 5:3-5, we explore how trials develop endurance, character, and ultimately a confident hope that never disappoints. This biblical foundation reminds us that hope serves as an anchor, turning despair into resilience and obstacles into opportunities for divine redemption.

I share insights from Dr. W. Warren's influential book "Hope is the First Dose," where he emphasizes hope as an active pursuit rather than just an emotion. As a neurosurgeon and combat veteran who faced unimaginable trauma, Warren's approach to "self-surgery on the brain" offers practical ways to rewire our thoughts toward hope. Through prayer, community connection, and trust in God's promises, we cultivate resilience that withstands life's darkest moments.

When the world feels broken, remember that darkness never gets the final word. God's love shines brighter against the backdrop of our darkest days, filling us with both boldness and a sense of purpose. Subscribe now to continue this journey toward resilience, and share this message with someone who might be struggling to find hope today. Together, we can choose hope anyway – not because it's easy, but because it's essential.

Introduction to Finding Hope

Speaker 1

Resilient Solutions Shortcast, episode 78, finding Hope in Troubled Times. Well, hello, my name is John Thurman and you're listening to my podcast, john Thurman's Resilient Solutions Shortcast, where I help you become more resilient in your personal life, in your relationships and in your faith. And this week it's a heavy week. First, we had the horrible murder of that young Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina by a deranged evil man. That girl had no chance and it was so sad to see how all that unfolded. Not only that she was killed, but no one lifted a finger to help her. And then, to top that off in the most horrific way, we saw and heard about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Recent Tragic Events

A lot of people are very stunned about where we are in our country today and, as sad and as tragic as this is, I want to share with you that we can have hope in these troubled times. Hello, my name is John Thurman. Thanks for listening to my podcast. Let's jump right in. Well, welcome to today's episode. I want to talk to you about a powerful force, and that force is hope, and how it serves as a divine catalyst for resilience, especially in these tough, tough times.

Recently, our world has seen some heartbreaking tragedies, and I want to reflect on these, but I also want to draw strength from faith and hope. I don't know about you, but my heart has been shattered by these acts of violence and hatreds we've seen over the past several days. First we had that brutal, senseless murder of that young Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina. Her life was filled with promise and dreams and it was unjustly taken away. Her story is a stark reminder of how the fragile innocence of sitting on a train is and how evil can invade even the most peaceful part of our life. It's heavy, I know, but it calls for us not to lose hope, to stand firm and then, lord, have mercy. We had to follow up in that tragic news of Charlie Kirk's assassination in Utah, a heinous act aimed at silencing a voice of hope, conviction and truth. These events shake us to our core, but they also highlight something vital that darkness and hatred are relentless, but so is the light of faith and hope. This twin wave of tragedy one against innocent lives, the other attempt to silence hope reminds us that darkness lurks everywhere, that it must never have the final word.

Hope rooted in God's promises causes us to rise above despair. Even in our darkest moments, god's love shines as a beacon of healing, hope, renewal and faith. In times like these, biblical hope is our anchor. Romans 5, verses 3-5, tells us we can rejoice too when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character and character strengthens our confidence.

Hope of salvation, hope isn't passive. It is a deliberate choice. A trust in God's plan is better than any type of act of violence or hatred. Hope helps us persevere. It turns despair into resilience. It turns obstacles into opportunities for divine redemption and divine hope. The Bible teaches us that hope is essential for endurance. Hope the Bible teaches us that hope is essential for endurance. As I read earlier Romans 5, 3-5, reminiscence of suffering helps develop character and a confident hope of salvation that never disappoints. Let me talk about this a minute. Hope is not just a feeling. It's a daily, active pursuit. It's prayer, it's trust, it's being plugged into a community of faith.

Biblical Foundation for Hope

Dr W Warren, in his book Hope is the First Dose, emphasizes that hope isn't just an emotion. It's a daily choice that we make with faith and focus. His book is a powerful book. Dr Warren is a board-certified neurosurgeon, a combat veteran and a man who had to struggle with PTSD, from both his experiences of combat and the unfortunate murder of his son. His book Hope is the First Dose is filled with wonderful truth about how to face those hard times, how to face the trauma, how to deal with the post-traumatic stress and how to do what he calls self-surgery on your brain. It's an excellent book. There's a lot of hope and a lot of practical things you can do. But one of the things I love about him is he really emphasized the fact that hope is not just an emotion. It's a choice we make through focus in faith and trust in God's Word.

Closing Thoughts and Call to Action

Another piece of scripture I'd like to share with you today is Romans 15.3. It says I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you'll overflow with confidence and hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. So in these heartbreaking, troublesome times, let's don't despair. Let's don't give in to evil. Instead, let's cling to the hope that we find in Jesus Christ. His promises are unshakable. His love is brighter than any darkness in the world. Even when darkness threatens to overshadow us, the light of God's love shines through brighter and stronger, reminding us that His promises are true and His power is unshakable. By standing firm in faith and trusting in God's divine plan, we invite His healing, redemption and peace to flood our lives. Redemption and peace to flood our lives. Hope in Christ is a powerful anchor that can sustain us through every storm, filling us with both boldness and a sense of purpose. Let's rise in unwavering faith, knowing that God's grace is enough to transform our despair into victory. With Jesus, we are more than conquerors and through him, a brighter, hope-filled tomorrow is already on the horizon.
