Welcome back to Fit Fueled and Busy. I'm your host, Janine, and thank you so much for joining me today. Welcome to February. I honestly can't believe we're already one full month into 2026. It is crazy. But this month we're kicking off by talking about how to eat out without completely blowing your goals, because let's be honest, eating out is part of real life. If you're anything like me, life is busy. Actually, most days it feels very busy. I'm a mom. My kids always come first, and they're both involved in extracurricular activities that have me running all over town after school. I'm also deeply invested in my career and my business, couture fitness, coaching, so life is very full. Not to mention, uh, relationships, friendships that I also enjoy pouring time into. Honestly, I prefer to eat at home, not because I'm obsessed with control, but because it's cheaper and if you know me, I am a little bit frugal with my money, but I also enjoy cooking and it is predictable. I like knowing how my food is prepared and how it fits into my nutrition goals. That said, I absolutely enjoy a good meal out at least once a week. Sometimes because of my schedule or my kids' schedule, we eat out more than I'd like. And you know what? Honestly, that's okay. Today, I wanna help you navigate eating out without guilt, without stress, and without derailing your progress. For many people who are focused on nutrition and actively pursuing health and fitness goals, eating out can bring up feelings of anxiety, guilt, or the belief that one meal has ruined all progress. I'm here to tell you one meal eaten out will not undo your progress. The reality is that life happens. You're going to have social events, work dinners, kids sports travel, all of which often involve eating out and not having full control over your food choices, and that's normal. That's just part of life. One meal does not derail results. Patterns do consistency, yields results, not perfection. Before we talk about what to do, let's address some common mistakes. I see all the time. One big one is saving calories all day to indulge later. This often backfires because you arrive at the restaurant starving. Instead of eating a reasonable portion, you end up overeating. Finishing the entire pasta dish in three dinner rolls simply because your body is overly hungry. Another mistake is going into a restaurant with no plan and extreme hunger, and a very common one, ordering based on guilt, not hunger. When eating out is treated like a cheat instead of a normal life event, it often leads to an all or nothing mindset. You tell yourself, I might as well enjoy it, and suddenly you're eating far beyond what actually feels good because these F foods feel off limits and temporary. That mindset creates restriction, which leads to overconsumption, which leads to guilt, and you often repeat that cycle. So instead of stress and guesswork, I wanna give you a simple system you can use at almost any restaurant. Always start with protein. Choose your protein first. Look for things like grilled chicken, steak, fish, shrimp, or eggs. Protein helps with fullness, feeling satisfied and blood sugar balance. So always focus and start with protein first, then add produce or fiber. Think things like vegetables, salad, fruit, legumes. These help with digestion and keep you feeling satisfied longer. And finally, add a permission food. And a permission food is a food that you enjoy. Things like bread, fries, maybe a dessert or a cocktail. You don't need to earn them. You're simply creating balance, not restriction. Let me share how I personally navigate eating out a little bit more. So if I'm at breakfast or brunch, I look for protein forward options. Eggs and a lean meat first. I'll pick those out first. I'll often choose fruit instead of hash browns and pair it with toast or a biscuit. I always ask for butter on the side so I can control how much I use on my bread. If I'm craving hash browns, which honestly is not often, I'm not a huge fan of hash browns, but sometimes I want them, then I'll skip the toast. I'm really looking for balance, not total elimination. Maybe a more casual or family style restaurant. I almost always choose grilled over fried. If there are two sides, I'll pick one healthier option like vegetables or fruit, and one fun option like fries or sweet potato fries. I also do love baked potatoes, and when I order one, I ask for all the toppings on the side. Most of the time I honestly just enjoy it plain with salt and pepper. But again, if I want to put on some butter or if you're someone who likes sour cream, absolutely enjoy it. But ask for it on the side so you can control how much you put on at a place that's maybe more like a comfort food or a pasta focused restaurant. I look for protein based. Main dishes first. If I do order pasta, I make sure it's paired with protein and I don't feel the need to clean my plate. And let me pause here for just an important reminder. You don't have to eat something just because it's served. You don't have to finish the bread basket. You can ask for things on the side or not at all. That's not being wasteful. It's being intentional. Honestly, to me, eating out mindset is key and really. Can lead to a successful night out. You can look at menus ahead of time or even use chat GBT as I've mentioned before, to help find meals that align with your goals. But here's the key to healthy nutrition mindset. It's not about constant control, it's about consistency. Many people follow the 80 20 rule, so 80% whole nourishing foods and 20% flexibility. I love this idea. Body composition changes come from patterns repeated week after week, not one dinner or one weekend. Another thing that comes up more often than people admit, as I know I've done it myself, is you order food based on what others might think. Maybe you've been there. You want the grilled chicken, but everyone else is ordering burgers and fries, so you second guess yourself, or you actually want the burger and fries, but you order a salad because you don't want anyone to judge you. Here's the truth. You are not required to justify your food choices to anyone. You are strong, you are intentional, and you are pursuing goals that matter to you. What you order does not need approval from the table. Your choices don't need to look like anyone else's, whether that means choosing a protein forward meal, asking for sauces on the side, skipping the bread basket, or enjoying the fries, because that's what you truly want you do. You confidence with food is about knowing what works for your body and honoring it. Without apology. People who are securing themselves don't question your plate, and if someone does, that's a reflection of them, not you. You do not need to explain why you ordered what you ordered, why you didn't order what everyone else did, or why you're prioritizing your health. You are allowed to take up space at the table and make choices that support your goals. So order the meal that makes you feel good physically and mentally. Trust yourself. Your consistency, your confidence and your results will speak louder than anything on your plate. And after you enjoy a meal out, do not restrict the next day. Do not punish yourself with extra cardio. Simply return to your normal habits. Focus on protein, drinking your water, getting hydrated, staying hydrated, and eating regular meals. Guilt keeps people stuck longer than food ever will. Eating out is simply part of life. There's no reason to fear it or stress over it or avoid it. Planning will help. Confidence with food helps even more. You can eat out, enjoy meals and still reach your goal.
