The Year Just Started...
Have you ever felt stuck at the beginning of something, wondering how things could possibly get better when they've started so rough? You're not alone. That feeling of "I'm at my lowest point and the year just started" resonates with so many of us trying to navigate life's unexpected challenges.
What if we reframed this thought completely? Yes, you might be struggling, but the flip side of "the year just started" means there's still so much possibility ahead. We're only in first quarter - there's plenty of football left! This episode explores the delicate balance between learning from our past experiences while not letting them prevent us from seizing new opportunities.
Whether you're thriving or barely surviving right now, this conversation offers permission to reset, reflect, and reach for what's ahead with hope. You are not behind. You are not late. You are exactly where you need to be. Join me as we unpack why your past experiences are valuable teachers but shouldn't be the architects of your future. Let's choose to believe in the opportunities ahead, even when we can't see the full picture yet. After all, the game is far from over - it's only just begun.

you've made it to the choose joy podcast. Here we make a conscious effort to choose joy daily. We allow ourselves to heal and grow into the path designed for us. Join me to unpack, affirm and choose joy. Hello, and welcome back, joyful babes. It has been a minute and, as always, I have missed you guys, but we're back, we're here, we're fresh. It's a new year, y'all.
Speaker 1:The last time that we chatted we talked about just honing in, getting ready for essentially where we are right now. We had less than 90 days to finish out the course of last year and here we are ending first quarter. So how's everybody doing? Are we surviving? Are we living? Which one? Are we living, or are we just surviving? Episode 17,? The year just started.
Speaker 1:I was mindlessly scrolling the other day and came across this post that said I'm at my lowest point and the year just started and my heart just sank For one. I knew I had to come on here and hello, have an episode Two. It just made me really reflect on how many times I've said that already and we are only in the third month and I feel like there's two ways of looking at that statement In a world where so much is changing in just the general dynamic of the world, the country, let alone our personal homes. There's a lot going on right and sometimes it can just feel like we just started, but simultaneously y'all we just started Like there's plenty of football left. Okay, there's plenty more left in the game. Okay, we are just in first quarter and dive into essentially, experience versus opportunity and how.
Speaker 1:This is a fresh new year and it's full of hope, second chances and, honestly, the power to shape into something meaningful. So, whether you're busy reflecting on past experiences or you're looking ahead at your new future, this episode is for you because we're going to talk about both. Every challenge success or failure is a lesson that shaped us for who we are today, and maybe last year didn't go as planned and maybe you stretched yourselves in ways that you didn't think that you could. But here you stand and here we are facing a new year, and that experience is valuable. I feel like sometimes we focus so much on what didn't work and what failed that we forget to see how much you actually grew and the moments that you struggled. They strengthened you and added development to your character. So we never want to negate what our experiences teach us and the wisdom that it gives, but you also have to just be mindful to have balance. And while experiences give us wisdom and teach us, they can also make us afraid to try new things and take new opportunities. And honestly, I think first quarter and last quarter are the best times for reflecting.
Speaker 1:Okay, we've already ended this past year. It was a great time to just reflect. It's still fresh y'all. It was just three months ago, so it's still fresh to look on habitual things that we were doing, or our schedule or our day-to-day clearly. Did we get those goals accomplished that we wanted to at the beginning of 2024? No, okay.
Speaker 1:Well, we're back at the drawing board. What's going to be our new game changer? You do the same thing over and over and over again, expecting a different result. That's the definition of insanity. We got to change it up. We got to switch it up. And that leads me into talking about opportunity. Okay, the power of right now.
Speaker 1:The beauty of the saying the year just started is the year just started. It's just that it's new. It's a blank canvas full of potential, full of hope. Maybe you didn't stick to your goals last year, so what, you get to try again. You've been waiting for the perfect time to take that leap, to try that restaurant, to apply for that job, to take that course, to go to school again, to whatever. The perfect time to do it is now.
Speaker 1:Opportunities aren't always loud and obvious. Sometimes they come as small little shifts, maybe a conversation, an idea, an open door that you weren't expecting, and the key is honestly just recognizing and acting on them, because it's one thing to have all these fabulous ideas, but if you don't act on them, then what they're going to be just that. Ideas and life comes at you fast. It requires you to pivot, refocus and reflect and reflect again. That will set you up for success or set you up for failure. It's up to you, depending on your mindset.
Speaker 1:I had a rocky end of last year, not gonna lie, honesty moment. I lost my job and I felt like I lost a sense of self, and it's actually amazing what happens to your brain and your mindset and your way of living, really, when things that you thought were important were taken away from you or are taken away from you. Wow, talk about restructuring, honey. Talk about rebranding. In a a sense Forced to rebrand. It was a lot. It was something that I had never experienced before.
Speaker 1:I'm usually very on top of things and pride myself on being a super duper planner. Yeah, it was just something unexpected. A super duper planner yeah, it was just something unexpected. Not what I was planning. It literally was just like a domino effect. It's like that happened and then something else happened. And there's another thing. If it's not one thing, it's another and it was just. I just felt trapped, um, and I just felt down, like how can I start the year like this, like and it's not, like, oh, okay, the clock changes and it's a Cinderella story, and no, that's like every all them problems still knocking at the door, still. And it became really hard, but not impossible.
Speaker 1:I continually remind myself that while things might be hard, they're not impossible and you can choose to dwell in your valley or you can pick yourself up and keep going and figure out what's next. You are not behind, you're not late, you are right where you need to be at this point in time. So my challenge for you is to reflect. We're going to look back at what we learned, but we're not going to stay there. We're going to reset and we're going to let go of any past disappointments and we're going to open ourselves up to new possibilities. We're going to let go of any past disappointments and we're going to open ourselves up to new possibilities. We're going to reach, okay, step into the opportunities that are ahead of us, even when they feel uncertain, because sometimes that uncertainty is just you know that stupid voice in your head that tells you that you can't do it, or that you're not enough, or that you're gonna fail again, or yeah, that uh goal that you had at the beginning of the year was just that, a dream like no, get up. Get up, stand up. Remember that joy isn't something that just happens to us. It's a choice, and, and this year I hope you choose to believe in the opportunities ahead of you, even if you don't see the full picture. We're just in the first quarter. There's a lot of game left. There's a lot of year left, okay, and I want you to look at where you were Turn around, look at where, where you just came from, and then look ahead of you and see how much more we have to go. Okay, as always, I'd really love to hear from you guys what are opportunities that you're stepping into for the year. Let's just keep this conversation going.
