Add Tax
"Your value doesn't decrease just because somebody else can't see it." These powerful words form the foundation of our raw and honest conversation about recognizing and demanding your worth in every aspect of life.
We've all heard the phrase "know your worth and add tax" thrown around as a cute affirmation, but today we're digging beneath the surface to uncover what this truly means in practice. Knowing your worth goes far beyond money—it's about understanding that your time, energy, voice, creativity, and story all have immense value that isn't diminished by someone else's inability to recognize it.
The "add tax" part? That's where many of us get uncomfortable. It means refusing to accept the bare minimum, establishing firm boundaries, and walking with unshakable confidence.

Join me to unpack, affirm and choose joy. Hello and welcome back joyful babes to the choose joy podcast, where we keep it real, we stay grounded in our purpose and we remind each other to choose joy unapologetically. On my ad, I am your host, chelsea, and today we're getting into taxes. Yeah, that's right, did you pay your taxes? Yeah, I don't know about y'all but tax season. But today's podcast episode is called Know your Worth and Add Tax. We've heard it. Let's talk about it.
Speaker 1:So when people say know your worth and add tax, it sounds real cute, real sassy, real sassy affirmation, cute Instagram posts. But when you really dig into it, there's some deep, deep truth rooted in there. It's really just because knowing your worth is one thing, but demanding it, protecting it and walking in it confidently, yeah, that's a whole nother level. So let's start here. What does it actually mean to know your worth? It's clearly not just about money or how much you charge for your services Although, yes, that's very much part of it, but it means so much more than that it's about understanding your time, your energy, your voice, your creativity, your story, because all of it has value, and the value doesn't decrease just because somebody else can't see it. And let me say that again for the people in the back your value doesn't decrease just because somebody else can't see it. Knowing your worth starts internally. It's not based on how many likes you get, who claps for you or who chooses you. It's rooted in knowing who you are, your identity, your purpose, your gifts and the hard work that you put in. Only you can know.
Speaker 1:Now let's talk about the add tax part, because that's the part that makes people feel uncomfortable. Honey To add tax part, because that's the part that makes people feel uncomfortable. Honey. To add tax literally means you don't accept the bare minimum. You don't just settle for what's being tolerated. You walk in with boundaries, confidence and clarity. You say I bring value and I know it. I'm not negotiating anymore. Forget what I bring to the table. I am the table, okay.
Speaker 1:Adding tax is the part where you stop apologizing for taking up space. Stop shrinking yourself, stop underpricing yourself, whether that's in your business, your job, your relationships or your just everyday life. I briefly chatted about this on our last episode. But I know what it's like to have seasons where you honestly forget your worth. You get overlooked for a promotion. You pour into people who don't pour back into you. You say yes to opportunities that deep down, you know you wanted to say no to or were below your standard, just because you just didn't want to rock the boat. I've literally been there. I have a whole journal in trees about it. Okay, but here's the shift Every time we settle, we send a message to ourselves that our value is negotiable.
Speaker 1:And I don't know about you, but in this season of my life, I'm done negotiating my worth, because here's the truth you teach people how to treat you. You teach them by what you tolerate, what you accept and what you reinforce. So if you've been saying yes to things that don't align with who you are, this is your reminder. It's okay to stop. It's okay to just say actually, you know what. I've outgrown that. And that job that underpays you, you've outgrown it. The relationship that drains you, you've outgrown it. That friendship that only shows up when it's convenient, you've outgrown it. You don't owe anyone an apology for evolving and growing.
Speaker 1:So now that we've discussed literally the basis of knowing your worth and adding tax and what that encompasses and literally what it means. I want to leave you with a few ways of how we can walk in our worth and add tax in a practical way. One set clear boundaries. Stop saying yes when you really want to say no. Okay, boundaries are a Like I've said time and time again and I will continue saying it I'm not just talking to y'all, I'm talking with y'all, I'm talking to myself, for real, and whoever aligns you, align, you get it. For those that get it, get it. And for those that don't, you know where to park it. But yeah, that goes for me. Stop saying yes when you really want to say no. It's okay to say no. It literally is they will deal with it, they will get over it. The world keeps going, we move. Two stop discounting your skills, whether it's negotiating your salary, setting your rates, pitching your business. Stop feeling guilty for charging what you're worth. That's the tax baby Period.
Speaker 1:Three surround yourself with people who see you, not just the polished version, not what you post on Instagram, the real, true you, the one who's still healing, still growing, still learning, because people who truly value you won't make you feel like you're doing too much or you're too difficult to handle. You're a human being who's evolving and growing, and it's not going to be pretty every single day. It's not going to be perfect, and that's not what life is about. Life isn't about being perfect. Be real with yourself and have people around you who will be real with you and will have grace, and that you can show them grace, because we're all doing this thing called life together in our own individual races. Amen Four speak life over yourself.
Speaker 1:Okay, I talk about it all the time journaling, writing, but also affirmations. Talk to yourself, and talk to yourself with love and kindness, how you would talk to your best friend. Your inner voice quite literally sets the tone for your outer world. So start your day with an affirmation I am valuable, I am enough, I bring something to every room I walk into. And this last one y'all this is something that I've been working on forever. Actually, I'm like, literally, I was about to just put a date on it, or like try to give it a timeline. All my life, all my life, I have, like all my life, I have been struggling with this one. It's not even struggling, because I feel like when you say struggling, that's a negative connotation to it. So it's just something that I'm actively working on and have been actively working on.
Speaker 1:Practice makes perfect. You know what I'm saying. There's always room for improvement, you know, to be much improved. But this last one is don't shrink, shine, okay. The world doesn't need a watered down version of you, because who needs that? Who wants that your light doesn't dim someone watered down version of you? Because who needs that? Who wants that your light doesn't dim someone else's? Shine anyway, okay, shine anyway, let it shine.
Speaker 1:I used to really pride myself on being a chameleon. You know Like I can fit into any room I can. But honestly, like, at what cost, at what expense I found myself throughout the years, especially in periods of transition in my life going to high school, going to college, getting into a corporate workspace, switching corporate workspaces I have noticed that I just give 25% of my personality. Or maybe you know you get this bit, but I'm not gonna know like what. No, I'm, I'm me. I am uniquely me and beautifully and wonderfully made and designed by God. You know, you don't know what is helping somebody else. I used to get, and still do.
Speaker 1:Quite honestly, my family and I like is too much, so you're so extra, she's loud, she does too much. Am I doing so extra? Oh, she's loud, she does too much. Am I doing too much or you're not doing enough? I think it's the latter, the older that I get. I think it's the latter, because ew, who needs that? Who wants that Like? I'm not going for it and I'm not going to make myself feel uncomfortable so that you're comfortable. Okay, I'm taking up space. I belong to be here, just like anybody else. My voice will be heard. I'm not biting my tongue, relatively speaking, to please those around me. No, and now, that don't mean that y'all go into the workplace or you know what I'm saying get into environments with other people and you act a fool. That's not what that means. But you feel what I'm saying If you don't text, because I mean I'm begging y'all to chat at this point.
Speaker 1:At the end of the day, knowing your worth isn't just a vibe, it isn't just a quote, a saying, an affirmation, even. It's a lifestyle. And when you really know it, you move different, you choose different, you demand different. Because here's the thing People will pay what you charge when you believe in what you offer. But the second you start discounting yourself to be more affordable for their comfort. You start shrinking, and you were never built to shrink. You were built to stand tall, to be bold, to take up space. Your time valuable, your energy priceless, your talent rare, and your story is one of one. Don't ever let anyone convince you that you're too much, or you're doing the most, or you're extra. No, they're just asking for more than they're willing to invest in period. We're gonna raise the bar, we're gonna set the tone. We're gonna stop explaining Our worth and start charging for it, because not everyone will understand your value and they don't need to, but you Do, okay, so know your worth. Add tax and choose joy. Duh, all right, and that's it.
Speaker 1:That wraps up today's topic. Send your questions, comments, concerns to our email. You can find that at wwwchoosejoycom or on our socials at Choose Joy, 2 Y's on Instagram and X I was literally about to say Twitter. Why y'all be changing stuff? But anyway, hit us up, send us a text. I want to know what you guys want to talk about. I want to know your thoughts. A lot of people touched bases with me on the topic of losing jobs and switching career paths and things like that, so I tried to kind of tap into it today with the topic of just knowing your worth, literally not thinking that everything that you do you have to be attached to or your worth is attached to, that You're just who you are, who happens to do whatever you do. Okay, and yeah, that's all Logging off. I will chat with y'all very, very soon on the next one. Okay, bye.
