Ep. 91: If You Can’t Shake the Fatigue, Bloat, or Brain Fog, Your Minerals Might Be Off with Katelyn [HTMA Series Part 4]

Heather Finley

So many women move through pregnancy feeling exhausted, puffy, bloated, and overwhelmed by symptoms that never quite make sense. And when labs come back “normal,” it’s easy to feel confused or even dismissed. This conversation brings clarity to what your body is actually asking for: minerals and electrolytes.

In this episode, we talk through why electrolytes for pregnancy matter far more than most people realize, how fatigue and bloat are often rooted in mineral depletion, and why supporting minerals can completely change how you feel during pregnancy and postpartum.

We unpack what it looks like to enter pregnancy already depleted, how those symptoms get louder as the months go on, and why simple electrolyte support can improve energy, digestion, hydration, skin, and even hair growth. You’ll also hear how personalized mineral support through HTMA testing can help you understand what your body needs so you can finally feel better.

Inside this episode, you’ll learn:
 • Why normal bloodwork doesn’t always show mineral imbalances
 • How low electrolytes contribute to fatigue, puffiness, and digestive issues
 • The connection between electrolytes and better stomach acid, hydration, and blood sugar
 • Simple ways to support sodium, potassium, and magnesium during pregnancy
 • What a custom mineral blend is and how it can replace multiple supplements
 • How electrolytes support postpartum recovery, milk supply, and hormone balance

If you’ve been wondering why you still feel tired, bloated, or dehydrated no matter how healthy you eat or how much water you drink, this episode will help you understand what your body has been trying to tell you.

Bear with me, but Caitlin, welcome to the show. I'm so excited to be here. This is honestly, one of my favorite things to talk about. So let's, let's get into it. Yeah. Okay. So funny story of how we met. So you work at my kids' dental office? Mm-hmm. The first time I met you was because I had brought my kids in to get their teeth cleaned and I'm walking out and you're like, you're the hair lady. And I was like, hi. And you're like, oh my gosh, I did the HTMA with your team. It was amazing, blah, blah, blah. And then all of a sudden, like all the pieces came together. Yes. I'm like, oh yeah, Caitlin. Okay. Yeah. Yes. You know, I, I had heard your name, et cetera, and so anyways, it's just kind of been a fun friendship that has built off of like being your lady at first. So, yes. Well, it was so funny because I had heard about you through my dentist and kind of thought it was. Weird craziness. And a lot of the things that she talks to me about at first, I think are weird craziness, and then I'm all all into it. But I had watched a lot of your Instagram videos and started listening to your podcast and your children were getting X-rays. And I was like, that voice sounds so familiar because I had literally just been listening to one of your podcasts and seen a lot of your Instagram reels and I saw your face and I just instantly was like, I just sent you my hair, and it was the weirdest introduction ever. But I've been super happy to have found you. Well, and the funniest part was the office ladies like looked at you like was crazy. It was. It was so funny. So yeah, anyways, that's how this relationship was developed, but yes, yes. Okay. So you heard about HTMA from the dentist that you work for, who had done TMA with us. And like you said before we pressed record, she does hooky, wooy things. And at first you were like, I'm not really sure about this. Like, why are you doing this? What's going on? So she told you about HT MA and then you decided to do it at actually kind of a weird time. So you were, I don't know, four months pregnant when you decided to do HT MA. Mm-hmm. So most people, I, I get a lot of questions like. I'll just wait till I deliver, or if I am planning to try to get pregnant or if I am pregnant, like when is the best time? And obviously you hadn't even talked to me, you just went ahead. Mm-hmm. And did it because you had been told to do it and that it would help. Yeah. So what kind of pushed you over the edge to try HTMA at four months pregnant? Yeah, well, I had heard about it when I was pretty early pregnant, but before pregnancy. I, and, and I think it's a little hindsight, like now looking back, I realize I had a lot more symptoms than I even thought in the moment. But before pregnancy, I would go in just for my, like, yearly exams and things would be like normal, but. Kind of on the low end of normal or blood work would be within normal limits, but kind of on the low end. But I was experiencing a lot of symptoms. I was roughly the same weight that I currently am, but I looked so puffy. I was really bloated, having a lot of issues with digestion, acne. but really in that specific moment, it was fatigue. I was so tired all the time before pregnancy. Like I know that pregnancy can, first trim after make you really tired, but before that, I would get home from a full day of work. Working in pediatric dentistry and be so tired that I didn't wanna do anything and I was in my, like, late twenties and it just didn't feel normal. I'm normally very energetic and I was just feeling really, really sluggish. And then when I got pregnant, it was just only magnified. and I wasn't getting any, getting many answers. For why my blood work was looking a little off plus symptoms. And then really, I guess looking back, one of the main things that I was like, I need to speak to this lady is my hair was just like falling off before pregnancy or falling out in clumps and I couldn't figure out why. And I was having a lot of thyroid dysfunction like symptoms without a lot of answers on why so. it just happened to be that I found you and was willing to pull the trigger four months pregnant. and I was so glad that I did. Okay. That's so helpful. So you were having a lot of symptoms prior to pregnancy and then, like you said, pregnancy can just magnify. Mm-hmm. Especially fatigue and hormone symptoms that were there before. Um, but around that four month mark is when you should start getting your energy back when you're pregnant. Yeah. You weren't experiencing that, you're still so tired. So you decide to do HTMA. What was the experience like? Cutting your hair, sending it in, and kinda waiting? Waiting for those results, I guess. What did you think you were gonna see? Or were you worried that your results were gonna say everything was normal because everything else had been normal? What was kind of going through your mind? Absolutely. I well. First I was just worried, you know, I'm not a type of person that likes to go to the doctor and then say, oh, you're fine.'cause then it feels like, oh my gosh, I thought something was wrong and it's not wrong. Or really be concerned and be met with, like it's within a real limits, even though you're telling me you're experiencing symptoms. So I don't really know what I expected at this point. I had just developed a good enough relationship with my dentist that anything she says, I'm like, I'm all for. And you speak so. Eloquently and passionately about the things that you can help on your podcast and on your social media platforms that I was really just sold and hoping that you were gonna help me find something. Now when you sent us the little kit to cut your hair, I was honestly like, oh my gosh, I'm about to get so much of my hair that I'm already worried is falling out and it's. Very minimal. It looks like a whole lot and then you do it. And now I'm due for my next one and not a big deal at all. So I wasn't really certain what I was getting myself into, but knew I just wanted to find some results and was honestly floored when I did my intake with one of your other colleagues. Um, I told her at the end, you need to up your prices. I feel like this is like the most informative. It felt like she was looking back into my past and knowing everything that had aligned in all my symptoms without. Me telling her all of these things. Isn't it crazy? Like what type of patterns we can tell based on someone's minerals about your life or about how you feel without even you telling us? Yes. I was like, did I put this? Did I write all this down somewhere? And you're just looking at it and she's like, no, I'm just kind of assuming. No, that is the cool thing about the ratios is so when you get your report back, and you've done HTMA now twice, and so you've seen your report, but the first page, it has all of your minerals on it and it has toxic heavy metals. So things like. You know, uranium, mercury, aluminum, et cetera. But the second page is actually, I think, where the magic is because it shows the ratios of minerals. Mm-hmm. And I talk about this a lot. You know how minerals are kind of like a symphony, so we're not. As focused on if magnesium is low or magnesium is high, it's more like what's magnesium in relation to all these other minerals. But each ratio means something. So we can tell how burnout someone is, how exhausted someone is. Mm-hmm. That their thyroid might be struggling. Uh, how stressed you are. Possible. Even infections. There's actually an infection ratio, and when it's high, it can mean something. When it's low, it can mean something. Yeah. So we often hear that from clients. We're like, man, you must feel really burnt out or. Did you have COVID a couple months ago because this ratio is showing us that, possibly there's a virus going on, or do you feel really hypoglycemic after meals? And people are like, how do you know that? Yeah. And it's crazy because it's driven by minerals and we often jump to like other things, which it sounds like you had already tried a lot of things for your energy and your hair falling out. Yeah. Kinda walk us through what you had tried that maybe helped a little or didn't help at all, um, especially because you had been told everything was normal. You probably felt like you were just kind of throwing things at yourself. Yeah. I hadn't really done much for the hair loss. I was really kind of at a loss for why it was happening. As far as my weight though, that's one that I felt like I had kind of thrown the kitchen sink at in my, it wasn't really fluctuation. I just always felt really puffy, bloated, and had a lot of GI issues. Um, I would kind of toggle between. Constipation, diarrhea, and just like my family, my friends knew like you, I don't go to out to eat, out to eat very well because I was always really nervous that it wasn't gonna make me feel very good or I would know I want to indulge in this food. It's a self-harm day. Like we're, we're going to eat this and it's not gonna make me feel very good, which is not very fun. So I had kind of limited my diet, um, or tried things that were more like safe foods. Um, and then to try and kick the weight I had really. For a little while, I was going to Orangetheory and Burn Bootcamp every single day. I was a coach at Orangetheory for a while, so I was really immersed in, in that. We're gonna go and we're gonna go often, and I was just not seeing results. I was really plateaued. I was very tired all of the time, and I just attributed it to a busy lifestyle. So then I kind of went the complete opposite and I stopped working out with high intensity and would just go on walks every day and did no other working out with not a whole lot of. Benefit for the way that I felt or the way that I felt that I looked. and it wasn't until I added the minerals in that I saw big changes there at kind of a silly time because I was five months pregnant and started to see results. And I think it's easy in your brain to say, oh, well this is a specific season of life, so maybe that's what it is. But I tell anyone and everyone, I attribute so much of my last leg of pregnancy and postpartum to the minerals. And then I guess before I had a custom blend, I would kind of dabble with like Elementis or other similar brands, uh, without realizing that like you're talking about the symphony of my minerals were off. And so just hitting it with things that weren't quite custom blends weren't really giving me benefit. Um, another really lovely piece of what you guys do was the diet. Education on how I can change my diet, what I'm already doing to beef up my potassium intake or, uh, my sodium intake. So then it really helped me guide my food intake to a way that was better suited for how I was going to feel and get proper minerals. Um, and that's been a really huge part of my transformation with minerals. Okay. So everyone's probably thinking you're five months pregnant, you're adding in minerals, you're doing all these things. Was it hard or was it time consuming, or do you feel like it was really easy to integrate into your life for like such a big payoff? It was the easiest. And I think that that is one of the best things I did in that moment was just get the custom blend because I was pregnant and I wanted to see results kind of quick and I mean, it's just as simple as like dropping it in your water. Um, I kind of made it through the season of life where, or the season of pregnancy rather, where I was super nauseous. Um, I thought that would be a big deal. Like, oh, I'm not gonna be able to drink this. It's gonna make me feel sick, but it's very easy. I would add it to my smoothie. Some days I would add it to, um, just a quick shot in the morning at nighttime. Um, or mix it in, like I said, with a smoothie. It was very, very easy and streamlined. And then the diet modification that you guys gave me, basically I told them what I kind of eat in a day. At that moment in time, I was pretty routine. I would eat similar things for breakfast, lunch and change dinner up a little bit. So like I would have a smoothie for breakfast and they would, you guys would just give me information on what to add to my already existing smoothie routine to beef up what I needed. So there wasn't. A lot of changes that needed to be made other than what I put in my grocery list. Amazing. And you started noticing changes. You started slowly changing your diet. Where did you fall then with exercise? Do you feel like you had the energy to maybe do what you wanted to do, but didn't feel like you had to just grind all the time? Yeah, or I mean, obviously there's the pregnancy portion of like, yeah, the pregnancy things change, so that's a little different. But where are you at now I guess with that? Honestly, that is probably my favorite thing to shout to people is in a season of pregnancy when it would be so easy for me to just go sit on the couch. I was pregnant through the summer in Texas and I started my minerals probably I got the blend when I was five months and started the routine right away and all the way until the day I delivered. I would go on an hour walk with my dog at nighttime and felt great. Um, had a whole lot of energy. Obviously the normal like pregnancy slumps, but enough energy to want to go for a walk every single day. And have continued that afterwards. Don't feel like to feel the weight that I'm supposed to be at or look the way that I feel like I should look and not puffy and bloated. Not really about weight, but more just about the presentation and like how puffy my face was and my stomach and bloated. I do a couple of days of strength training and a lot of walking. And I feel like I've been able to maintain. A weight that is comfortable for me, that's healthy for me, um, but more importantly that I feel good doing all of that and I have the energy to do it with a 14 month old. Which is not easy chasing around 14 month old. Yeah. One thing that I thought I would mention related to your custom blend, so, in, in case this is new to anybody that's listening, if you're just getting familiar with HT MA, one of the cool things that we can do based on your results is we can actually custom formulate a mineral powder for you. Mm-hmm. And it sounds like it might be like. More expensive or like really out of reach, but it actually ends up being more affordable than like buying even just LM T or Potassium Cocktail or whatever mineral products you're buying because it's custom to you. It has everything you need. And for you, it replaced your prenatal vitamins as well. Oh yeah. Yes, yes, yes. Yeah, which was so lovely. And to speak to that, I actually just had my husband. Get his HTA test and get his results because he is that person that wants to be health and wellness and will spend hundreds of dollars on this supplement and this green powder and this supplement. And you add it all up and you do realize, oh my gosh, I should have just done this from the get go. And he's a, a budget guy and numbers guy. And when I showed him, he was like, oh man, I didn't even realize it was spinning.'cause he, he would get in. Weeks said, okay, I'm gonna do this green powder. And then when it didn't really make him feel good, he would kind of find a different thing. And he's felt so much better with just his custom blend'cause it's what he needs. He's not blindly guessing at what he should be fueling his body with. Amazing. So speaking of your husband, I remember you telling me when we came back in for a dental cleaning. So then at this point, so the first time I saw you, you were like five, four or five months pregnant, and then the next time was, or maybe this was the third time, um, I'm not sure. Maybe there would've been a time in between there, but you were like three months. Postpartum. Mm-hmm. Or a couple months postpartum. You had just come back to work and you're like, I'm so excited to do another test and just see where I'm at. And you told me, you're like, my husband told me I have to stop freaking people out talking to them about minerals. You're like, yes. Everywhere I go, I tell people about minerals and finally my husband was like, you gotta stop because people might wanna hear about this. Yes. Yeah. But now he's completely flipped. We were buying our, the home that we currently live in, and our realtor is one of our friends and she was just kind of venting to us about some similar issues. I was not present at this moment. I was upstairs looking and Chad was like, you should talk to Caitlyn. She's, she's really into this mineral thing and it sounds like they are having a lot of the similar concerns. And she went and got a mineral test. So Amazing. I love it. So now she's on, on board with it. Yeah. That's so funny. Okay, so you did a second test when you were, you know, three-ish months postpartum. Mm-hmm. What was that experience like? Do you feel like, you know, maybe it's a little foggy just because you were postpartum. Do you feel like it kind of built on your previous results? Or what motivated you, I guess, to do a second test and just kind of continue on on the path? Yeah, I think I was motivated. So I was at this point out of my custom blend and just relying on my, um. Diet for minerals, but I wanted to, you and I had spoke at your children's cleaning. Um, I promise I cleaned your kids' teeth, but we talk a lot during these appointments about ourselves. We're usually there for like a long time. I'm sure that they're like, this is not efficient. Yes. Their clients. Yes. So I was. You know, in early postpartum and still feeling okay. But, um, I was breastfeeding at the time and wanted to make sure that my supply stayed up. I had kind of started, life gets busy and I wasn't cooking the same way that I was previously. I also wanted to check in because it was such a, an odd time to get my first HTMA test during pregnancy to see what had changed. Afterwards because I was in such a season of depletion with being pregnant and then being postpartum and breastfeeding to see how things had changed. I know that in a lot of your podcasts and social media. Things you talk about, that's a season where your depletion is pretty high. And I wanted to see, I'm a big numbers person, so I wanted to see while I was pregnant and then afterwards had I made any changes with this custom blend. Like was the juice worth the squeeze, was what I paid for really helping and in a numbers perspective. and I just was feeling kind of tired but newborn. And I knew the four month. Postpartum hair loss was coming for me hard, and I didn't want it to happen. So again, selfishly, that's probably one of the like largest reasons I went through and did it because I felt so good during my time on custom Blend. Um, and I was really glad that I did because when I did my intake assessment again after the test had come back, we had seen a lot of really good changes in the, not just each individual piece, but their, How they work together. I'm forgetting the word right now, but the, the ratios between each of the minerals had improved, which was huge in a time of such depletion. That was something that really surprised, not surprised me because we see this all the time, but something I was pleased with was just your second test. Had improved actually from your first test? Yes. And some things were a little off, and needed more improvement, but like a lot of things had started to stabilize, which was really cool to see. Like you, we saw some of the higher things that were out of balance come down and some of the lower things start to come up. Mm-hmm. Which was really good. So you embarked on your second custom blend and you're finished with that now, so. Mm-hmm. Walk us through like kind of how you're feeling now, where you're at what you're kind of doing on a daily basis to support your mineral needs. Just'cause, you know, we definitely tell our clients like, you don't always have to have a custom blend. There's like seasons where it's super convenient and seasons where like you can do it with diet and with mineral mocktails and, and all the things as well. So what does that look like for you now? Yeah. So, on a day, like I, like she said, I'm done with my custom blend and so on a day-to-day basis, we just make sure to get, I still have that list printed off for my second HTA test of food groups to help add into my diet to help support my potassium and sodium. So on a daily basis, diet modifications for what we're cooking. But, I enjoy element tea and so it's kind of my like, afternoon pick me up. Mm-hmm. I do that or my water with Redmond salt to help support my sodium'cause it was really low. And those are really like the two things I, how I wanted to do it this time was extend a little time between htma attest and Htma attest to see if my diet, if I could sustain it with diet or if I continued to need. Support of the minerals. but I still feel really great and haven't felt the the strong need to go back. I do want to, and I'll probably do it when you run your little next special but just modifications in my day to day and I felt really good. Still a great amount of energy, not feeling that slump that I had before. And not a lot has changed other than I have like more on my plate now. So I should be in a. More depleted, more tired state, but I'm not at the end of the day, which is, is so lovely. So yeah, just diet and you know, not prescription or, custom blends, just elementis or things over the counter like that. Love it. And that's, I mean, ultimately the goal is minerals are, are dynamic. They're always changing with diet and stress levels and sleep. And we only get minerals from what we eat. But you know, a lot of clients that come to us are really depleted like we saw on your first test. And you can kind of think of it like. Digging a pool in your backyard if the pool is completely empty because you have this big ditch, we're gonna need to bring in buckets Yeah. And bulldozers of water. But eventually that pool starts to fill up and it's just kind of maintenance over time. Yeah. Like what do you, what do you need on a daily basis, to kind of keep the, levels balanced? And so maybe you go through a stressful season or you have another kid, or you're breastfeeding again or, or whatever, and you. Go back on something more custom than just kind of maintaining it on a day-to-day basis. Yeah, absolutely. Okay. So. What would you say to someone who maybe feels like you do? Like they're really tired. Their labs are normal. They, their hair's falling out. They have tried several things and not really gotten anywhere. They feel really puffy. They feel inflamed. Or I guess, what are you telling your friends since your husband was like, you need to stop talking to people about this. What do you, what are you telling people about minerals or what would you like somebody to hear if they're curious about this? Yeah, so you talk a lot about minerals being the building blocks to like everything. And so I just spew that to anyone that will listen if they're telling me they're having concerns. So if friends, even if they're not really talking to me, they're talking around me, I still will do it. You know, it's, it's the building blocks to your hormone production, the building blocks to, to all things. And what's. What do you have to lose? If you are feeling these things and you're trying a lot of things, why not try this, but get something that's custom for you and get results based on like what you're actually experiencing and what's depleted in your body. It was such an easy addition into my day-to-day with such. Huge results. And the, I feel like knowledge is power, but knowledge with implementation is so much more so. It was like, I knew this about myself. I knew I was depleted in these areas, but I had something to implement to like really move the needle of that, like my knowledge of where I was. So just telling people like it's pretty. Easy to get started to know your answers. And then it's not like you have to do the custom blend. You could just choose to take your information and do some diet modifications to see what goes on. But, if you're having issues like the stomach issues, that was the biggest one for me. This bout of. Am I an, am I not going to be able to eat these things or will I, will I not feel good? Will I be able to go on vacation and feel okay? Like all of those things, it's just your quality of life and when you're in it, you don't realize how much it affects your life until you're not in it anymore and you're look back and you're like, man, I cannot believe that I let that go on for so long, or didn't realize that there was something that I could do to help. And on that note, I guess, how long did it really take you to start seeing results? Because I think oftentimes we think like this is gonna take forever. You know, it's gonna take months for me to start seeing results. And obviously everybody's journey is different. But for you, what did that look like? Yeah, so that's one thing I guess I didn't mention before, but I was struggling with a lot of acid reflux, just issues and. Before pregnancy. it was very odd. So I would really restrict my diet there. And in pregnancy I was still experiencing that because, well, pregnant. Yeah. But the second I gave birth, it was like literally all gone. And that was so, so lovely. But then other things like my hair started growing back. I think you, you came in for, Cleaning with your kids. A couple of months after I had started, I was still pregnant and I remember telling you, I went into the lobby and I was like, my hair is growing back so long. Look at all these new baby hairs. My husband had even noticed it, and boys don't notice a whole lot of things. So I was so excited about that. And that was just a couple of months with like actual regrowth, but I just felt really. Really good. During the last stages of my pregnancy, uh, my OB even joked like, oh my gosh, you're gonna have so many kids. You're like, loving pregnancy. Because I just felt really energetic, really good. I wasn't having a lot of the fluctuations in energy. I did, I just felt really good. And then it continued over to preg or to postpartum. I feel like that was one thing that I worried about, like maybe I am just a really good pregnant person and when I have this baby, a lot of my problems are gonna come back. And it didn't in a time when you would really expect to be so depleted. I was obviously tired, I had a newborn, but energy to do things,, didn't have big tummy issues. The reflux was completely gone, which was so worth it for me and my. Skin had really cleared up a whole lot. I was having a lot of issues up and down with just acne. I'd been on birth control for quite a few years. That had contributed to a lot of the concerns and even acne medications, topical, but oral medications that I've been able to get off of. And I think it, it definitely has played a, a, a huge component in it. So pretty quick results. It's so amazing and it continues to just amaze me with all the clients we see, just how many things minerals can help. You know, you can like take hormones for this one thing or you can take this medication for this one thing, but when you like comprehensively address minerals, it really affects every system of your body. So anything we missed that you wanna share before we wrap up? Other than I guess after I had the baby, I did have my OB run another blood panel just to see, because things were in that, like really low range, but technically with the neural limits. And I've seen complete resolution of all of the things that were like kind of being monitored or on the edge of within normal limits. And I so I felt symptom resolution, but I'm also seeing. Actual stats saying those things are resolving. So if you are on the fence about it at all, I would absolutely even just get on a call with'em and see how they can help you. Um, because it's really changed my life and I tell anyone and everyone that is willing to listen about it, um, to hope that it can help change theirs too. I love it, and thank you so much for being our biggest advocate. That's why I was like, I have to have Caitlin on the podcast because she's just a girl that found us through word of mouth and now is shouting it from the rooftops. So I love it so much. Yes. So thank Well, thank you so much for having me. Thank you so much for helping me with all of these things. You guys are the best. Yeah. Well, thanks for joining. Yeah.
