Speaker 1:

Hey squad, I'm your host, danielle Donovan, and you are listening to 5 Minute Fridays, a 5 minute pep talk and boost of inspiration to take with you into the weekend. Today, we are talking with our beauty expert, editor and entrepreneur all about what to do for your morning and evening skincare routines. This is a question that so many people want the inside scoop on. So, elise, what would you say are the best steps and process to follow for your routine for the morning and evening?

Speaker 2:

So when it comes to morning routine, you want to focus on protection, because that's when our skin is bombarded with everything. Throughout the day, you know we're exposed to the sun during the day pollution, environmental aggressors, all the blue light from our phones and computers and screens even overhead light has blue light exposure as well. And then at night, you're going to want to focus on repairing, because when we sleep, our skin goes hard to work to undo everything that it is exposed to during the day. So I always say that a good morning routine should consist of a cleanser, a vitamin C or an antioxidant protecting serum. You're going to also want to use a light moisturizer that's not going to pill under your makeup if you wear makeup and sunscreen. Those are the basics. Anything else above that is going to be based on your skin type and any current skin concerns.

Speaker 2:

And then at night is when we're going to focus on our stronger actives that we can use during the nighttime. So again, you're going to want to use a lot of the same steps, but you're going to swap out the sunscreen because you don't need it at night, and instead you're going to want to put in some of those really regenerative ingredients that include retinol, for example, peptides, things of that nature. And then at nighttime is also when we have a little bit more time on our hands. So if you want to throw in like an at home peel or a mask, I personally like to do them at night. I have a little bit more time to do them and that is rushed, and I also love to do a few times a week like a LED red light mask at home while I'm watching TV or just answering a few emails. But the most important thing to remember is that morning routines should focus on protecting and nighttime routines should focus on repairing.

Speaker 1:

Protecting, repairing. I love it. So what are some top products that you recommend? I know asking a beauty expert is so hard to recommend specific products, but those top, non-negotiable products that you use every day in your morning and evening routines.

Speaker 2:

So for a cleanser it's normally for me the same I use either our Swish Peachy Clean, which I love, or I'll use a very light gel-based cleanser. I kind of use the same one morning and night. I'll add in a double cleanse. So I'll add in before my cleanser either oil based cleanser there's one from Mabora use a lot or a balm based cleanser. There's another one from Beauty Spy that I buy on Amazon. It's like $19 and it's just like this big tub and it's so easy to use and it just washes clean. And then I also like to use vitamin C during the day. I don't use that at night, but I'll use a vitamin C product from SkinMedica. I like their vitamin C a lot and SkinSuiticals has some great ones with other antioxidants in it. During the day I also like to use just a very light exfoliating toner. There's one from Alpen Beauty they're I think it's called Pour Liquid that I've been very into lately. And at night I'm going to really amp it up with more of my hyperpigmentation, anti-discoloration products, so things with like lactic acid, kojic acid you know that's when I'm going to use more of my acids at night and retinol at night always. I've recently been very into the Alpharet from SkinMedica, but I'm a huge fan of the Babor Retinol ampoule serums. Those are like my go to.

Speaker 2:

And what else? Sunscreen during the day, obviously, I have so many. I love color science, sun, forgettable flex. What else do I like? I like the LTD Tinted sunscreen. There's a great one from Dr David Kim called Lightsaber. That's like a really nice texture that just blends into your skin so well.

Speaker 2:

And then, if I'm new, wearing makeup and not just doing sunscreen with a little bit of concealer during the day, naked Sundays has this clear sunscreen that's like a gel serum format that I can layer makeup over it and it doesn't pill or cause, like my foundation, to turn colors, which is great. And at night, you know, again, it's like just really focusing on whatever my current issue is. So if I'm working on breakouts and I'm going to use my retinol and I'm going to use maybe like a pimple patch at night with some tWish underneath it, or if it's more of like a discoloration issue, I'm going to go a little bit heavier with my brightening agents and maybe exfoliating acids. Yeah, so it's just kind of, you know, making sure that my nighttime products are focused on repair and regenerating and my daytime products are focused on rejecting.

Speaker 1:

So good, I love the recommendations and real quick to wrap it up, can you just give a recap of the step by step process? So morning, step one, step two, step three, step four of what you use, in the order you use them, and nighttime, for the same, for all the squad listening.

Speaker 2:

Sure. So for morning, you're always going to want to start with a cleanser. Then I do a little bit of eye cream. I will do an exfoliating toner on my face, just like a light swipe of it. Then it's vitamin C and antioxidant serum. Then if I have like a pimple that I need to spot treat, I'll just put on a little bit of spot treatment, dab it on. Then I put on a light moisturizer or hyaluronic acid serum and then sunscreen. That's like my basics. Sometimes I add in other steps, but those are like my basics.

Speaker 2:

And for nighttime, again cleanser. But it's going to be a double cleanse to remove all the sunscreen and makeup that I might have on during the day. Then again eye cream. I normally put on like a little bit of like a lash serum or brow serum at night and what else? I do? Some retinol, I do a little bit of moisturizer and sometimes at night I'll like seal it all in with a couple drops of like a face oil, something that's super light, that's not going to make me break out, and those are again the basics. I kind of like layer in other products depending on what I might need on any given day, but those are like the basics of what I do.

Speaker 1:
