Courage to Connect

From Unsubscribed to Opporutnity

Mark Ostach

Ten years ago, I set out to write my first book. After completing the manuscript, I handed it to an editor whose constructive criticism sent me spiralling into a year-long bout of writer's block. When I finally crawled out of that dark space and rediscovered the joy of writing, I made a new commitment to myself: I would write a story once a month and send it as a newsletter. This shift took the pressure off writing a book and instead allowed me to write when I felt inspired.

After six months of sending out monthly stories, I had 500 subscribers from the events I spoke at across the Detroit region. My audience included friends, family, work colleagues, and a few influential figures—among them, Detroit billionaire Dan Gilbert. I was building momentum as a writer and felt good about my new habit.

Listen in how I took a moment of rejection to a place or growth and be inspired on how you can do the same thing.
