Courage to Connect

The Man on the Corner: A Story of Unexpected Friendship

Mark Ostach

In today's episode, I share the story of an unlikely friendship that began with a simple request on a street corner in downtown Detroit.

When I first met Lester, he asked for a few bucks—for cigarettes, baklava, and hot chocolate. What started as a small exchange grew into a connection that changed my life. Over time, Lester taught me that the greatest gifts we give aren’t things—they're time, presence, and dignity.

This episode is about slowing down, seeing the people we often pass by, and remembering that connection isn’t complicated—it starts with a smile, a conversation, and a willingness to notice.

I hope this story reminds you that sometimes the people carrying the richest stories are the ones we almost overlook.
