Hey there, welcome back to another episode of Imperfect Marketing. I'm your host, kendra Korman, and I am super excited to be recording today at Walsh College's Creator Studio in Troy Michigan. So if you're just listening, do me a favor and jump on over to youtubecom forward slash at Kendra Korman and check out the recording digs. We're giving it a try for our January episodes, to see what you think. Let me know. So today we're going to get talking about something I get asked about all the time when it comes to podcasting, and that is how do I get business from my podcast? Well, it's shockingly easier than you think, and it starts with not asking that question. Okay, so I'm going to change. I'm going to sort of reframe the question. Don't think about generating business directly from your podcast, but more about generating relationships. Okay, and when it comes to getting relationships, my favorite tool is still email. So people start to hear you and build a relationship with you and they feel like they know you. Well, get them on over to your email list and show your personality there, because that's important. Now I hear from a lot of different business owners that have thought about starting a podcast, or maybe they are podcasting and they're pouring their heart and soul and all of their free time into their podcast. They're doing a ton of editing. They're taking out all their ums and their sos and their ahs and any other filler words that they might use. We'll keep them clean, though, but they're struggling to grow their email list. They're not seeing a change in their business and there's not a lot of work that goes in to make that happen. So I want you to have a plan for how you would go about doing that, and by the end of the episode, you're going to have that practical, straightforward way to make that happen, and it's probably a lot simpler than you think, and it's like I keep feeling like I'm an official newscaster here.
Speaker 1:Okay, so let's go ahead and talk about something important. Your podcast listeners are already some of your warmest leads. Why is that? Well, because they feel like they know you, they see you, they hear you, they can hear your intonation, they hear your jokes. They feel like they're having a conversation with you. I love to imagine that I'm having a conversation with somebody and just sharing with them about whatever my topic is. That really helps me be able to connect with people just a little bit more, and that's how your listeners feel they feel like they know you, right, and that's part of the benefit of video, right? That's why YouTube is so popular. That's why YouTube is such a popular podcast platform. So, again, they are spending time with you. That's some of the most valuable things that you can get from people is their time. Why not spend just a little bit more and get into their inbox to be able to share and build more of a relationship? Now, again, this is very different than someone that just stumbled across a post of you in their feed or stumbled across your website or happen to hear your name in passing. This is a quality relationship. They're already spending time with you. Now, I actually have had clients and people join my boot camps and other courses because they were a loyal listener in my podcast, and when we get to the Q&As, they're like I feel like I already know you and this is really the first time we've met and they feel like they have already known me because they listen to me and I'm talking to them on a regular basis, just like I'm standing here talking to you.
Speaker 1:Now, here's where people get stuck. They think they need to create complicated lead magnets, fancy PDFs, all these other things right. Sometimes the best lead magnet is just a well-organized landing page. You do not have to overcomplicate this. You do not need to create a lead magnet for every episode or have every episode tied to a specific lead magnet. Okay, if you're launching an online business or an online course or something specific during a certain time of year, you can tie that in, feel free. Don't overcomplicate it. Don't sign yourself up for more than you can deliver, lord knows. Been there done that? Have the t-shirt on that over here.
Speaker 1:Think about creating a simple landing page. Maybe it's a blog with the follow up steps, maybe it's just in the show notes that they have access to the information that you want to send them to. There's a million different ways that you can do it, and then you can send them to more information and they can sign up to join your email list and get more information about that topic. So think about creating a simple landing page. Right, it brings things together. Maybe it's the tools and resources that you mentioned in that episode. Add a few bonus resources that maybe compliment what you discussed, make it exclusive to your podcast listeners and put it behind an email signup. It's really easy to do that. It does not have to be overcomplicated. But if that's too complex for you, again email signup form, welcome email that just has what they signed up for in it. Email that just has what they signed up for in it. There's so much that you can do and keep it simple. And again, the key here is to keep it simple.
Speaker 1:For example, let's say you're doing an episode on social media strategy. Your resource page that you give people access to might be your favorite scheduling tools. Maybe it's got a comparison of what those scheduling tools are. Maybe some templates that you use for content planning. Maybe it's got a link to some Canva templates to create carousels or reels or stories or something along those lines. Maybe a list of your go-to content creation apps Like for me, I would list quadai and Canva and riversidefm for all of my video clips, that type of thing. Maybe you even give them a bonus tip sheet about the topic. It's so simple and so easy to do.
Speaker 1:I have gotten so many leads and my email list has grown so much just through my podcast and just through sending people to get free resources from the different episodes and what I'm talking about, and I even tell people hey, you can get all of my freebies at KendraCormancom forward slash freebies. That's it Super easy. Or you can go to KendraCormancom forward slash tools and see all the tools that I use for different things, especially if, like you're a podcast host Now that one's not behind the scene behind a signup wall, because, again, it just depends on what you're trying to do. But all of the freebies you can see all of those, click on whichever ones you want and then get those welcome emails with those resources. Again, your call to action with something like this can become really, really simple. Again, head to whatever website slash resources to get all the tools and tips we discussed today, plus some bonus resources that I put together just for you, so you can do so many different things with just a simple landing page.
Speaker 1:Do not overcomplicate this. Now, speaking of calls to action, let's talk about when and how to present them in your episode. So I've found a few different moments that in each episode that make sense. So, again, I already talked about two of my landing pages right, the KendraCormancom forward slash freebies and KendraCormancom forward slash tools. Right, so you can share it right after one of those valuable insights, if you're like, hey, if you want to check something out, go over here and check it out. You can do mid episode if you're expanding on a tool or resource and send them to that for more information. Or, at the end, say thanks so much for tuning in.
Speaker 1:Head on over to this to get more information Super easy to do. The key is to make it natural. Information Super easy to do. The key is to make it natural and, again, most importantly, valuable to your audience so that they want to go get it. You're not interrupting, you're enhancing their experience. You're not selling Again, you're providing value, and I think that that's really what's important there. So, if you want to put this into action right away, I've put together a resource page with everything we've discussed, plus, again, name your specific bonus. Just head on over to whatever your URL is to see it all. Super easy, right? And if this stuff was there, you could go ahead and check it out Again. Keep it simple, keep it themed to your focused topic and you can use it episode after episode after episode, and it can become a living page, right, a living document where people can go and get more stuff.
Speaker 1:Okay, so someone joins your email list because you've got this awesome page that's back behind an email signup form. Remember they're joining your list because they already know your voice, your style. You want to keep that conversational style going in your emails. Do not take out all your personality of your emails. I've been there, done that also and it did not go well. Once I started adding my personality back in, it's amazing how many people started actually replying and clicking and engaging with more of my content Now.
Speaker 1:But again, your welcome sequence. So they sign up, they're going to get a welcome email. It can be just one email, it can be three to five emails. Just depends on what it is that your goal is with it and how quickly you want to move them to your weekly email. So again, a warm welcome that acknowledges thanks so much for signing up for my podcast. Quick access to the resources that they signed up for and this has got to happen automagically and a glimpse to what they can expect from your emails maybe a question that invites them to reply and connect. That's really valuable and really important.
Speaker 1:So let's go ahead and wrap this up quickly with three simple steps that you can take this week. I want you to think about what would your simple resource page look like, what would the website have, and if you already have a podcast, what are the resources you're going to be sharing in your next episode and can you outline that and give them some really valuable information? Write a clear, straightforward call to action for you to read in your podcast and put in your show notes and your YouTube description and then set up a basic welcome email, just one email that delivers them access to what they're asking for. You don't need to overcomplicate. That is the biggest mistake I see from everybody is trying to customize and provide so many different things on a regular basis. So start simple, test and see what works for your audience.
Speaker 1:Marketing is not a perfect science. That's why this show is called Imperfect Marketing right? It's about moving forward, testing and experimenting. I would say like 60% of marketing is experimenting and learning from there and build from those learnings. And learning from there and build from those learnings. Thanks so much for tuning into another episode of Imperfect Marketing. I was so glad that you spent some time with me today. Until next time, have a great rest of your day.
