Christina: To jumpstart your year, we are coming to you every day this month with many episodes to get you reflecting on what's working and what's not in your parenting and productivity journey. Our goal with this series is to create momentum and spark creativity so you can go into the new year with clarity and intention.

Hey, I'm Christina, life and business coach, homeschooling mom, and co founder of the Village Coworking Community Space. And today we're going to be delving into how to decide on your goals and objectives. So we've talked a little bit about setting intentions for your day, setting intentions and creating and implementing new habits.

But how do you decide what things are important and what you actually want to focus on for the year, for this period of time, and just your life in general? A lot of people will talk about goals and creating SMART goals or creating different measurable outcomes. And I think that it's often tied to some type of outward success, whether that's monetary goals, whether it's professional goals, and whether it's academic goals.

One of the things that I think can get overlooked when we're looking at or like buying a new house or a new vehicle kind of these outward measures of success. But most of us, if we look at it, the things that are really important to us are our internal values and they're not always tied to these outward goals that we may have.

So as you're looking at. Your goals and objectives. What are the things that are really important for you? I think one step that I see often missed in goal setting is that we rush to go and create our goals without thinking and clarifying what our intention is for them and what our actual core values are and how we want to feel.

And as I've been delving deeper into this work one of the People that I think goes over this really well is Danielle Laporte, and she talks about this core desired feelings and what is it that you're actually going for. So when you hit those markers, whether it's, you know, buying a new house or hitting that monetary goal of what you want to be making, it's not usually the goal itself.

That is what we're looking for. It's that feeling that we think that we're going to get when we reach that goal. And what are the ways that you can incorporate that feeling, or what are the aspects of your life where you're going to find those feelings. So when I look at and I think about how I actually want to feel in my life I want to feel excited and lit up I want to feel energetic I want to feel alive, I want to feel connected.

I want to have an impact and make an impact. And how are the ways that I can actually go about creating that I want to have a lot of joy and adventure. And if I look at it from that point of view, it can change my goals completely. So if joy and adventure is one of the things that I want in my life, which it is, then my goals are going to look different and might not be so focused on.

Professional career development are not only focused on professional and career development, because I want to have that connection. I want to have that joy. I want to have that spontaneous adventure. So some goals for me sometimes are. Creating family trips or time that I can go and explore something new setting up little mini excursions where we go and check out something that's new in our backyard or just get out and try something that we haven't done before, or spending time, even if it's like family game nights and things like that, where we're spending time connecting That's a goal for me.

That's, that's something that I want because that's something that I want to have in my, in my life. That's something that's important to me. I want to have this time for connection. I want to be able to have fun with with my spouse, with my children with my family and my friends. If I don't think about that going into.

The process of planning when I go in and I start to create my daily habits, if I start to set up my monthly work or my yearly goals, probably not going to fit those things in if I'm not intentionally looking at it ahead of time. And considering that those are things that are important to me, there are so many of us, particularly in the United States where it's, it's kind of just part of our society that most of us don't take our vacation days from our jobs.

Most of us don't take our personal or sick days. You know, we're, we're constantly in this mode of continuing to have to perform and to have to do all of these things on our to do list. We miss out on a lot of that connection to ourselves, our passions, our spark, and then we get burned out. So if I don't want to be like, if I don't want to feel that, then how can I intentionally go into it and say, am I making space for these things that I say that I value?

If I'm saying that I value all of these. things, then maybe I don't need to sign my kids up for so many after school activities. Maybe I need to pull back on some of my commitments. Maybe there are things that I need to intentionally set up and communicate with my friends or my family or To actually go in and take the time to plan that trip or to go visit those relatives and how am I making space for that?

So when you're looking at goals and your objectives for the year, looking at it in this broader terms of what do I want my life to feel like? What do I want my family to feel like? What do I want my days? To feel like, do I want them to feel like this hustle and grind and just trying to get through every day or do I want to be able to have spaciousness?

Do I want to be able to have connection? Do I want to be able to have fun and how can I bring that into my every day rather than just setting aside for hopefully at certain times of the year or if it happens? Because we all know that where you put your focus is what is going to come out, you know, where your attention goes energy flows, and by taking that step back and looking at this bigger picture of why do I want to do the things that I want to do and how can I actually.

break that down and make that part of this goal setting, then I have the time and the resources and I have the intention of being able to spend my focus and my energy in creating that. And so as I'm going through and I'm looking at it, it's almost like, Looking at it from a budgetary perspective, where you can look at a budget as being restrictive the same with time management or planning, you can look at as being very restrictive or you can look at it in a way as I'm just wanting.

I only have this amount of resources, whether that's. You know, I only have this budget for the month, or I only have this amount of time because that is a non renewable resource. How do I want to spend it? How can I make sure that I'm spending it in ways that are aligned with what I say that I want to be doing?

And when I look at that, and for me, when I look at that from a planning perspective, that completely changes how I set up my month. It's completely changes how I set up my. Week and even my day and just gives me that anchor back to how I want to be living and that for me is living in alignment. It doesn't matter if I run a marathon this year.

If. That's taking me away from these other goals that are actually what's important to me. And the marathon itself isn't what's important. I just want to be physically fit. So maybe I change up what that goal is. And I say, instead of doing that, like, I'm just going to, you know, spend 30 minutes in the gym every day.

So how can I do the things that I want to do and how can I look at my goals from a whole life perspective? How can I look at that from my personal development for me? Like, what do I want to do for myself as separate from being a mother or an employer or an employee or any of those things? And then how do I want it in terms of my family, my friends, what do I want to do for fun?

What do I want to do from a financial perspective, like what are the things that I'm working on? Where are we going? What do we want to be doing? And taking it from this whole perspective what I want and what my vision for us and for myself and for our life is, and how can I start to. What are the steps backwards that I need to take to be able to have that life that I'm wanting?

How can I back plan to create this life that I desire? But it starts with that bigger picture, looking at it in terms of goal setting and intention setting from this broader perspective. Of how do I want to feel? So as you go through your planning, are you looking at it from this whole perspective? Are there areas of your life that you do that maybe are neglected or that you really do want to bring more intention to?

Are the goals that you have in alignment with your values and with your time and your resources and where you want to be spending that? So these are all things that I, I consider. And then how can you bring that into your goal setting on a, on a smaller level too? So not in, once you have that bigger vision, how can you bring that into now when I'm setting up my goals for the week or my objectives for the week, my actions, what am I doing?

How can I bring that same sense of intention into it? So, I would be curious how you set up your goals and your objectives. Do you take this broader view? Is this something that resonates for you? I think that it, when I started doing this, it kind of changed completely how I approach planning, and I definitely think that it brings a lot more intention to it, where before I would just set goals that Sounded great, but weren't necessarily in alignment with, with what I actually wanted to do or be spending my time.

And since doing this and incorporating this more, the more that I'm able to do that, the more centered I feel and the more I'm able to have those feelings and embody those feelings and the values that I want to, that I, that I desire for myself. So if you like this episode, you might also like the village, which is our community and co work space where we offer opportunities for connection, accountability and intention setting.
