You know your pattern. You've named it in therapy, journaled about it, explained it to everyone. And you're still doing it. In this episode, we get into why self-awareness so often stops working for high-capacity women — and why understanding your pattern is not the same as being free of it.

Using one example we all recognize — the business or project you keep talking about but never actually start — we walk through why knowing doesn't move you, how to get an accurate picture of what's really going on, and the three moves that actually get you from insight to action. This isn't a willpower problem. It's a wiring problem, and it's fixable.

What you'll learn in this episode

  • Why self-awareness can quietly keep you stuck instead of setting you free
  • The reason the story you tell yourself about why you're stuck usually isn't the real reason
  • Why you can see everyone else's blind spots but not your own — and how to borrow an outside view
  • What actually makes talking it out work (hint: it's not venting)
  • How to journal so it does something instead of just sounding nice
  • The three moves that cross you from knowing to doing: interrogate the obstacle, design your environment, and shift your identity
  • Why "I'm a woman who builds things" beats "I'm trying to start a business" every time

Key takeaways

  • Awareness is the trailhead, not the finish line. Understanding your pattern harder won't change it.
  • You can't read the label from inside the bottle — get the view from outside your own head.
  • Just picturing the goal can make you less likely to act. Name the real obstacle and pre-decide your response.
  • Willpower loses to grooves. Design your environment so the right thing is the easy thing.
  • Decide who you are, and let your actions catch up to her.

From Awareness to Action: Becoming Her

[00:00:00] Awareness and action are two different tracks in your brain. One part understands everything beautifully, and a completely different part is running the behavior on autopilot, and it's moving faster than you yourself can think and catch it. So you can know better and still watch yourself do the same thing

Speaker: Welcome to Clear and on Purpose. I'm Christina, coach, strategist, and someone deeply fascinated by the patterns that keep capable people stuck in cycles of burnout, overthinking, pressure, and self-sabotage. Around here, we go deeper than surface level motivation or productivity hacks. We talk about the hidden dynamics shaping the way you work, lead, relate, and move through life so you can create success that actually feels sustainable.

Each [00:01:00] week, I share personal stories, mindset shifts, and practical insights to help you reconnect with yourself, reclaim your energy, and move forward with more clarity, intention, and self-trust. I'm glad you're here .

There's a specific kind of stuck that only happens to self-aware people. You can understand the pattern. You could probably teach a class on it. You understand it thoroughly. You've talked it through, you've written about it in your journal, and you've explained it to your best friend over wine more than once.

You know exactly what it is that you do, and yet you're still doing it. So today I wanna talk about what happens when self-awareness stops working, because for high capacity women, this is a trap that we can fall into over and over. [00:02:00] You mistake understanding the pattern for being free of it, and they're not the same thing.

And I wanna walk this through using an example that I come across all the time. You have a project, a business, a passion, something you wanna build, and you talk about it. You're really good at talking about it. You dream about it. You've got a name, maybe you've figured out the color palette. You have a complete vision in mind.

You can describe exactly why it matters and why you haven't started it, because you understand yourself, and as the months go by, you continue not doing it. And so this is what we're gonna entangle today, why the knowing doesn't move you, and how to actually cross from that self-awareness to doing it And [00:03:00] one of the things that we need to start with is almost everyone believes that they're self-aware.

But what research actually shows it's that there's only a small handful of us that really are, like one in 10. So the odds the story that you're telling yourself is accurate is really not great. And this is not about you being intelligent or not, it's because of how your mind works. You don't have the access to the information about what's driving you underneath.

So the mind does what it does best. It fills in the blanks and it writes a convincing story, and it can feel really true.

So with your business, you'll tell yourself, "It's the timing. It's just not the right time," or, "You need more money to invest. You need to learn one more thing first. Maybe after you get that certification. You'll start when things settle down." [00:04:00] And every one of those things feels like the truth. But if you notice, you've been settled down before, and you still didn't start.

The timing may have been good before, or as good as it's gonna get, and you continue to not take that action. And so the story is the thing that the mind hands you so that you don't have to dig any deeper to find that real reason. And this is how you know that your view is unreliable. Think about how clearly you can see it in everyone else.

Your friend who keeps shrinking her dream to fit the space that she's in. You can see it from a mile away. You'd know exactly what to tell her. But your own version, you're standing too close to it. You can't read the label from inside the bottle And this is not [00:05:00] a discipline problem. It is not that you are not taking the action because you are lazy, and you didn't fail on some test of willpower.

Awareness and action are two different tracks in your brain. One part understands everything beautifully, and a completely different part is running the behavior on autopilot, and it's moving faster than you yourself can think and catch it. So you can know better and still watch yourself do the same thing.

That's just how we're wired, which means the fix is not understanding it more, The fix is getting out of your own head and then working with the part of you that actually is going to take action. So what do you do if you can't trust the view that you have built?

You can borrow a view from the outside, and here's a few ways to do that. The [00:06:00] first one that you can do is completely on your own. Step outside your own situation and look at it like it belongs to someone else. Take that business you won't start and ask, "If my closest friend brought me this exact situation with the same fears, the same excuses, and the same stall, what would I see?

What would I tell her?" Because something shifts when you do that. People reason about their own problems far more wisely the second they look at them from the outside. It's using your same brain, but you have a better viewpoint. You're not so invested in it. You're going to see those patterns so much more clearly when you're on the outside of it because you can't access that information while you're sitting inside the fear, while you're sitting inside that baseline pattern [00:07:00] yourself.

And the second reason is the real reason that talking to someone helps Just talking at someone isn't the magic. It's not about verbalizing the information. It's not about dumping it all out, and then that's how you're able to understand and process. Because venting is an insight. It's not about complaining about how it's not the right time or all of the excuses that you have.

What actually moves you is when the other person can use that to reflect your own words back to you. When you hear yourself say the thing out loud in someone else's voice, and you go, "Wait, did I just say that?" And that's the moment where you start to be able to read that label because you're hearing it from an outside perspective.

You get that separate viewpoint. So you'll be explaining why you can't start the business, [00:08:00] and a good listener will repeat back what you actually said. "Hmm, so you're waiting until you're certain it'll work." And suddenly you can hear how impossible the bar you set is. You couldn't hear it in your own head.

You probably didn't even notice that. You needed it handed back to you. And this is why the outside perspective is so powerful. A good coach, a good therapist, even the right friend, they ask the questions you would never ask yourself, and they connect the dots that you keep treating as separate. You think this stall on this project is a one-off.

They've heard the other versions. They can see that you did the exact same thing the last big thing that you wanted and the one before that. You think it's an isolated incident, but a good coach can see the pattern because they're not standing where you're [00:09:00] standing. And this isn't a soft feel-good stuff.

When they study what a good outside guide actually does for people, the biggest, most reliable gains show up in exactly this: self-awareness and the ability to actually regulate yourself toward what you want Getting the right outside perspective is one of the most effective things you can do to change.

And this is not you being incapable or you lacking that self-awareness. It's because nobody can see their own blind spot, and when there's no one in the room, the page is your outside perspective, but only if you do it right. So if you don't have someone that you can talk to and you are just in it, the easiest way to get out of your head and be able to get that outside perspective is when you're journaling and basically writing [00:10:00] all of your stream of consciousness thoughts, the messy kind.

So you set a timer, and you write without stopping. No editing, no making sure it sounds good, no policing your grammar, and no lifting your pen. Just the deepest, truest, ugliest version of what's actually going on, and eventually that real thing will leak out, and that's when the journaling does something.

When you stop performing, and you start just actually spilling all of it. The point is the same as the friend, to get it out of your head and onto something that you can actually look at

So say you've done that, and you've gotten honest. You've found the real thing under that business that you won't start. Maybe it's that starting means it could fail, and as long as it stays a dream, it stays perfect and safe. So now [00:11:00] what? Because knowing that is still not moving it into action. And this is where most self-aware people stay stuck because they can name it, and they understand it.

They think that that is it. They have this beautiful, accurate diagnosis, and they treat that insight like it's the finish line. But that's actually just the starting point. So once you're moving out of self-awareness into action, you need to stop announcing and start interrogating. You need to start... Stop just giving yourself information, "Oh, I'm doing that again," and moving on.

You need to start getting really curious, and watch what you do when you finally decide to change. You declare it. "Okay, Monday, I'm gonna start. I'm gonna take that first action." You can picture it all working out, and you feel that little hit of [00:12:00] motivation. But there's a trap in that. Just picturing the goal, just visualizing the success actually makes you less likely to follow through.

I know it's counterintuitive, but by doing that, it gives your brain enough of the good feeling that the pressure to act quietly drains away. You got the reward without actually doing much. So don't announce it. Interrogate it. Instead of, "I'm going to start," ask yourself, "What has actually stopped me every other time that I got to this exact point?

Why am I not already doing this? What is stopping me, and what is preventing me from taking that next step?" And get specific. Name the real obstacle, not the story, the real one. When I sit down to build the website, I get flooded with [00:13:00] emotion and shame and fear of failure, and instead, I go and clean the kitchen because that seems safer to my nervous system.

And that is good. That's good information

Because now you have something real And then pre-decide what your response is gonna be. You don't wanna leave this to willpower in the moment, because that's exactly where you've lost every time before. You decide in advance, when I feel that flood coming and I reach for that distraction, I go to clean the kitchen.

Instead, I'm gonna set a timer for 10 minutes and put one word on the page first. A goal on its own turns into action maybe a third of the time. But tie it to a specific moment. When this happens, I'm going to do that. I'm gonna sit there with those feelings. I'm gonna name the [00:14:00] feelings and allow them to be there.

And I'm gonna do that and breathe through it for five or ten minutes while I let my nervous system acclimate. So you're doing and have a game action plan ahead of time so you're not just deciding in the moment. The second thing that you can do is design the world so that it does the work. About half of what we do every day isn't a decision.

It's a habit. It's automatic. It's cued by your environment before your thinking brain even shows up. And willpower loses to that flow every time. So stop trying to out-willpower yourself and change your setup instead. Make the thing you want easier to start and the thing that stops you harder to reach.

Attach the new work to something you already do without thinking. You already make your [00:15:00] coffee or tea every morning, so the business hour hangs on that hook right after. And pair the hard thing with something you actually enjoy so your brain stops bracing against it. If you're gonna go work on something hard, put on a playlist that motivates you, or you only get the good podcast while you're doing the work that you've been avoiding.

When people bundle the thing that they want with, with the thing that they should do, they actually will show up. It's a really reliable trick because it works. And it's really smart to build those in to understand that that's gonna be enough of motivation to move you there.

And the third thing is probably the most Productive and proactive thing that you can do, and that is to become her. Don't chase her. This one, if you do it, can change everything really fast. [00:16:00] So stop trying to do the thing and start being the person who does it. There's a real difference between I'm trying to start a business and I'm a woman who's building something.

One is a task you might fail at, the other one is just who you are, and every action that you take proves it true. Even the smallest shift in how you name yourself moves your behavior because once it's who you are, the actions stop being a fight and they start being really obvious. You don't debate whether to work on it the same way you don't debate whether to brush your teeth.

It's just what you do. You're that person now And this can be really beautiful because the resistance that you've been feeling changes. When you're trying to quit something, every craving is a [00:17:00] battle that you might lose. But when you've decided you simply are that person, th- that old pull starts to feel foreign.

It starts to feel something that's outside of you. So when the thought comes up, maybe I'll start it next quarter, maybe I'm not ready, and instead of white-knuckling against it, you get to look at it and go, "Huh, what a strange thought for a woman who builds things to have," because it doesn't fit you anymore.

You're not resisting the identity. The old story just stops being yours, and that's the whole game. You don't discipline your way into a new life. You decide who you are, and then you let your actions catch up to her

So awareness was never the finish line. And because you've probably been treating it like one, like if you could just understand your pattern completely enough, [00:18:00] the change would follow, it won't. Understanding is where you start, not where you arrive. And you get honest by getting outside your own head.

You look at your life like it's someone else's. You let someone reflect your own words back to you. You spill the truth onto a page, and then you cross into doing the work with how you're actually built. You name the real obstacle and decide your move in advance. You design a world that carries you, and you stop chasing the woman you want to be and start being her.

The business you keep talking about doesn't need you to understand yourself better. It needs you to get out of your own head and give the version of you who already started something new to be. If you wanna go deeper on any of this, everything I referenced today is in the show notes. [00:19:00] I pulled the real research so you can dig into it yourself And if this is the pattern that you keep running, you can see it, you can name it, and you still can't move, that's the work that I do.

And there's a link below to find your hidden pattern. Start there or book a reveal session so that you can have someone else reflect back your self-awareness. I'll see you on the next one. Stay clear and on purpose
