Today, I will be talking about the Sense of Smell, and its gateway to healing; the Nose.

The sense of smell is the most primitive of the senses, smell connects us directly with our memories, emotions and instincts. Have you ever smelled something that instantly transported you? A memory, A mood, A sudden feeling of calm or happiness? This is not just random, its biology and your spirit teaming up. And today I am going to share with you how your nose, a small yet mighty organ, is a healer, a communicator and even a guide!

Let me start with the nose itself- the “gateway’ for the sense of smell.

Obviously it’s not just this odd looking thing on your face that comes in so many shapes and sizes, it’s one of the most direct lines into your brain.  Smell is the only sense that goes straight into the limbic system- the part of the brain that deals with emotion, memory, mood, and survival instincts.  That’s why smells hit you in the heart, smells bypass logic. You don’t think a smell- you feel it!

Smell is directly wired to the parts of your brain that control memory and emotion, which is the limbic system. This is why a single scent can instantly bring back a vivid memory or a strong feeling. In a way, when we smell we are creating our own natural form of aromatherapy. Smelling is not just sensory, it's deeply therapeutic and emotionally active.

Aromatherapy is not new. Its ancient. Ancient Egyptians used essential oils in rituals, burial practices and healing. In India, aromatic herbs and resins were used to calm the mind  and awaken their souls.

When we smell something we are actually absorbing some of its molecules, making aromatherapy a form of natural medicine. Aromas activate the healing power within us, simply smelling a great smell will promote a sense of relaxation, and will invoke your inner healing.

As I wrap up this episode, I hope you are walking away with a new appreciation for your nose, not just as a body part, but as a powerful GATEWAY to healing.

Whether thru natural aromatherapy, nasal oils, or simply just protecting your nose from harsh synthetic scents you open up  healing that’s always been with you. Your nose is always speaking and it deserves your attention, and remember healing doesn’t always look like a prescription, sometimes it smells like oranges, or fresh rain, or your moms or grandmas soap.

I cant hang up before I say for this 3rd time- the overuse, underuse and misuse of your sensory faculties is one of the primary cause of disease.

Enjoy!
