EP123- Voting for Your Future Self
Lets us know your thoughts thru TEXT!
What does it mean to truly take ownership of who you're becoming? In this thought-provoking episode, I explain a great concept from author James Clear that has transformed my approach to personal growth: "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become."
Drawing from my own experience of transformation, I share a mental framework that has helped me make better choices daily. Think of yourself as the main character in a video game—are you satisfied with what you see? While we can't change certain attributes like height or age, we have tremendous power to transform other aspects through consistent choices. The key is developing a crystal-clear mental image of who you want to become and aligning your daily decisions with that vision.
This perspective shifts responsibility back to us in a profound way. Rather than blaming external circumstances, we recognize our power to control our future through deliberate choices. Yes, the world may have been unfair, but by taking ownership of our path forward, we reclaim ourselves. Each decision—whether to pursue growth or settle for comfort—is essentially casting a vote for the person we're becoming. These votes accumulate over time, gradually transforming us into either someone we aspire to be or someone we never intended to become.
Time is constantly moving forward, but that doesn't mean we can't become better at navigating life's challenges. Start this week by asking yourself: What choices can I make today that will lead me closer to becoming the person I wish to be? Your future self will thank you for the votes you cast today. Happy Father's Day to all the dads listening, and remember—you have the power to shape who you become through every choice you make.

Hello, hello and welcome back everybody to Compounding Daily. I'm your host, miguel Sanchez, and welcome back to another short episode, a solo episode. It's just me in the studio today. I'm going to be quick about it today, as we are sure to be setting time aside to celebrate Father's Day. I'll start with that, just to say happy Father's Day. I hope, if you are a father and you're listening to this, that you are being appreciated for the things that you've done and become to support the family that you've created. And today's going to be a short episode.
Speaker 1:I have a quick topic. I always like to be consistent in providing value. Value and my value comes from my own experience, whether it's something that I read in a book, which is what I'm going to be talking about today, or something that I'm going through personally, an idea that I'm contemplating with. The goal is always simple, and that is for you, the listener, to gain a little bit of strength from listening to the things that I'm going through. And whether that value is there for you or not, that is up to you and the perspective in which you receive it. And, with that being said, let's get right into it. I love to be the reminder that in the beginning of a brand new week, since it is Monday when this releases, that you have an opportunity to decide as who you show up, as a reminder that Monday, for most people, is dreadful. It is a reminder that they are not happy with where they are, where they're going, who they are and who they're becoming. And most people carry that energy with them, especially if, for example, mother nature plays a part in adding a little bit of drama into those emotions in the form of, like rain or a muggy day. And now, before you know it, the week just started and you're already in a bad mood. Make sure that you are present, make sure that you are observing the conversation and you don't show up with that negative attitude, and let's get right into it, into today's topic.
Speaker 1:Today's topic I got from a book by James Clear. I can't remember the book because I just wrote down the quote and the author, but James Clear, I'm sure, is a very famous author, so if you just type in his name, I'm sure a lot of things will pop up. But what I want to speak about today is this quote and it goes like this Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become. And the reason I wrote that down is because I relate to that so much. And the reason that I relate to that is because I always tell my friends that if you can envision yourself in your own mind like you are the main character of a video game and you are in the beginning of the video game and the character is already made physically for you, there's not much you can do for that to a certain extent, right, but let's just say you are not satisfied with that character's physical attributes. You want them to be realistic here, because we are talking about you, so don't say things like taller or you know a different race, because that's not going to happen. You are who you are and you are the height that you are. You know we all deal with those things and we can't control those things, so therefore we don't even worry about them. But in our minds, right, we get to look at a version of ourselves and we get to create a better version of ourselves in comparison to who we are in reality. And I believe that the better you become at refining that image of yourself, the better the choices you make outside in the real world. And I approach my life just like that in the real world. And I approach my life just like that.
Speaker 1:Imagine that when I started thinking of this idea, the character at the moment was overweight. He wasn't happy. His eyes weren't looking directly at the camera, they were looking down, because insecurities were present, fear and doubt was present. I was lacking faith in life, period, you know, and I had a choice to make. I could allow that image to be my reality and remain there and just continue life, knowing that I am dissatisfied with who I voted to become. Or I can approach it the way James Clear says I can approach every action as a vote towards the person I wish to become. And if you approach your day to day like that, literally just sit with this thought.
Speaker 1:If I was to wake up every day with the image in my mind of the person I wish to become, and then I just say what choices can I make today that will lead me closer to that? And then you do it over and over and over again. Who will you be A year from now? You would be a completely different person, I guarantee it. Who would you be seven years from now? A completely different person. Why? Because, over time you've voted with consciousness, meaning you're aware of the decision you are making to move closer towards the person that, in your mind, you have been crafting in your mind, you've been working on. And the more you work on it, the more life becomes a little bit exciting, because now you have things that you are working towards, you got things to create, things you want to experience, the person you wish to become, the direction in which your life is headed, and all of these things stem from you. That's all I have today.
Speaker 1:That is a short message. I could expand on it significantly, but I feel like over time I would just start repeating the same thing. So I don't want to bore you with the in-depth sort of reminder. This is just very simple. If you don't play video games, then just create a different image in your mind. But the idea is that you have an imagination and if you have trouble with the imagination, just stand and look at the person in the mirror and play the same game.
Speaker 1:Are you happy with the person staring back at you? Are you happy with the person that back at you? Are you happy with the person that you've allowed yourself to become? Sure, maybe for most of your life. You've blamed the world and sure, maybe the world has been unfair to you. You know I won't take that away from people. But take away that power from the world and control the power for yourself and tell yourself you know what. I'm responsible for this. And since I'm now responsible for this and holding myself accountable for it, therefore it is now on my platter I get to decide what goes forward. That is, you taking control of your life.
Speaker 1:Instead of blaming the world for your lack of you are blaming yourself for your lack of initiative and therefore you can now say okay, I'm aware that I've maybe allowed the world to get the best of me, but now that I stand here, conscious about the changes I want to create because I've already created a better version of myself in my head I just have to make better decisions. And if you view those decisions as a vote, I have two options in front of me and I get to decide. I get to vote which one benefits me most. And if you continue to choose the one that leans towards the better version of yourself, without a doubt, logically speaking not emotionally here, just literally logically speaking chances are you're going to improve, chances are you're going to benefit from it in one way or another, whether it's the changes that you are now blessed with because you've earned them, or the difficulties that you had to overcome in the pursuit of creating that person that you wish to become. Either or you're going to become better. Have that image of yourself and view every choice you make as a vote towards that person that you wish to become, towards that life you wish to create, towards that experience you want to go through.
Speaker 1:Time is ticking, is what I tell myself every single week. Every time I release an episode, it's like wow, another week just passed you by. I haven't missed a week. So I can proudly say that it's been, let's say, 123 weeks since the show has come out, and to me that's a significant amount of time. And I hope that, as I continue to progress, I don't give you that and put you in a state of negative emotions, but instead a state of awareness where I'm just reminding you that you're not getting any younger. Things aren't going to get any easier, but that doesn't mean that you can't become better. Things aren't going to get any easier, but that doesn't mean that you can't become better, and that becomes a reality when you vote towards the person you wish to become with the action that you choose to take or not take. Thank you for being with me. Happy Father's Day. Let's start the week well, and until next time.
