Welcome to Simplified Sparky Marketing.
Today's podcast is brought to you on St. Patrick's Day, so go out, have a Guinness, eat some spuds—do all the usual things. If you're in a city like Sydney, you'll probably get a shit Guinness, but just grin and bear it. It'll be good for you.
This week, I want to talk about website speed. It’s something I’ve noticed a lot lately with my members and people reaching out to me—their websites are painfully slow.
People today are impatient. Everything we need is instant—food, entertainment, responses. If you go to McDonald's, you expect your order in two to three minutes, and if it takes seven or ten, you're standing there thinking, what the f** is going on?*
It’s the same with your website. If it’s slow, people won’t wait. If they click your link and it doesn’t load in two to three seconds, they’ll assume:
- The site is broken.
- The business isn’t professional.
- They should just go elsewhere.
And trust me, they do.
I’ve checked some of your websites, and some are taking five, six, even seven seconds to load. That’s far too slow. It might not seem like a big deal to you, but to potential clients, it’s everything.
If you want to test your website speed, there are plenty of free tools online—just Google "website speed test". One popular tool is Pingdom. Enter your website URL, choose a test location (if you're in Australia, select Sydney or Asia Pacific), and run the test.
You can also compare your site speed to competitors' websites. But take the results with a grain of salt—I’ve seen my website score similar to others, but in reality, mine loads instantly when clicked. So the best way to check? Test it yourself.
Grab a friend’s phone, open a browser, type in your website, and see how long it actually takes to load. If you want to be really precise, grab a stopwatch and time it.
If your site takes longer than three seconds, you are losing leads.
Think of it like this—standing in a shop, waiting to be served, while the receptionist looks at you but doesn’t acknowledge you. You’d leave and go somewhere else, right? That’s exactly what happens when a slow website makes people wait.
It’s an easy fix, but if you don’t do it, it’s costing you business.
