The technical term for being a sugar burner is being metabolically inflexible. Because did you know that your body has three fuel sources? We have the sugar from food, which is quick burning. We then have stored carbohydrate, which is known as glycogen, and then we have stored body fat, which is long-term fuel. Your body is designed to switch between these fuel sources effortlessly, but for most people, this process is broken. For most people, they are stuck in sugar burning mode. And this isn't your fault. The modern world sets our bodies to be dependent on sugar instead of burning fat for energy. And it does this in a few ways. Food is always available. You've got Uber Eats, delivery, takeaways, convenience stores open 24 hours a day. Your body never needs to tap into its stored fat. Eating healthy snacks and snacking has become normalized. So again, your body never needs to tap into the stored fat. We've also been told to eat every two to three hours by big food companies who want us to eat their food-like products. Frequent eating leads to blood sugar spikes, which impact hunger, energy, mood, and leads to stubborn belly fat. And then stress and poor sleep keeps you craving carbs. Cortisol, the stress hormone, spikes hunger and makes you reach for quick energy. It wasn't always like this. This has happened in a relatively short period of time. Just look at this photo taken in the 70s. You can't see a single person who is overweight. Back then, the average woman was 5'4, weighed 120 pounds, and had a 24-inch waist. Go to the beach now, and there are more overweight people than there are in shape. Today, the average woman is still 5'4, but her waist is 35 inches and she weighs 30 pounds more. Here are five signs that you are stuck in sugar burning mode. You crave sugar and carbs all the time. You feel irritable, low energy, and moody if you miss a meal. You experience energy crashes throughout the day. You feel out of control with food, and you struggle to lose weight even when eating less. If you recognize any of these symptoms, you are likely stuck in sugar burning mode, which means long-term weight loss will be almost impossible. This isn't about willpower. You don't lack motivation or discipline. Your body is working against you. And what happens if you stay stuck in sugar burning mode? Well, there are short-term consequences. You're going to crave food all the time, you're going to feel out of control with food. You can lose weight, but it always comes back on. And there's a lot of guilt, shame, and frustration. But the long-term consequences are a bit more serious. There's an increased risk of metabolic disease, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. Chronically high blood sugar levels force your body to pump out more insulin, which over time makes your cells resistant to it, setting the stage for diabetes. Hormonal disruptions, poor metabolic flexibility, increases cortisol, the stress hormone, disrupts estrogen and progesterone balance, and this is especially problematic in women over 40, and it can contribute to thyroid dysfunction. Increased inflammation and chronic disease risk. Elevated blood sugar and insulin levels cause widespread inflammation, increasing the risk of heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer's, and even some cancers. And there are mood swings, anxiety, and depression. Blood sugar flaturations impact neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, leading to increased anxiety, irritability, and depressive symptoms, and brain fog and poor focus. Your brain relies on a steady energy supply. When it can't efficiently switch to fat burning, you experience memory issues, brain fog, and reduced cognitive function. But it's not all doom and gloom. So here are three discoveries I made about weight loss for women over 40. Discovery number one, your body was built to burn fat, not sugar. When you're burning sugar, you're going to be like this woman on the left. Tired, hungry, constantly thinking about food and struggling with your weight. When you become a fat burner, you're going to be energetic, clear-headed, no cravings, and stay in shape all year round. Think of it this way: sugar is like rocket fuel. It's really intense. You get an immediate energy boosting effect, but it doesn't last very long. It is unsustainable. Whereas fat is like renewable energy. There are almost endless reserves of fat to tap into. There aren't nearly as many fluctuations and it's much more stable. So most people usually turn to restrictive diets to try and get them into fat burning mode. Keto is probably the most popular. The theory is you cut out all carbohydrates, all the enjoyable foods, and your body is forced to burn fat. And yes, you will switch to fat burning doing this, but it's utterly miserable. Carnivore is another recent one where you're predominantly eating protein and fat, eliminating carbohydrates. And yes, you will switch to fat burning during this, but again, it is unsustainable and unenjoyable. And the classic one is the Atkins diet, which lots of people had lots of success with, but again, highly restrictive and unenjoyable. Using those methods to reset your body to burn fat leads to a vicious cycle of losing weight in the short term, but then putting it back on and more. It affects your metabolism and your relationship with food. And more than that, cutting out carbs and your favorite foods is utterly miserable. So I found a better way to reset your body to burn fat. A way where you can eat carbs, chocolate, pizza, ice cream, you can drink wine and your favorite alcohol, you can enjoy life and you can end the cycle of guilt. But most importantly, you can trust yourself again. Discovery number two, stress and emotions have rewired your brain to crave sugar and carbs. And you end up stuck in this vicious cycle where stress, boredom, loneliness, and frustration trigger a craving and you have a strong urge to eat comfort foods. The food gives you a sense of relief, but it's a brief feeling of comfort and distraction. It then leads to guilt, feeling like you failed again. And then, of course, this cycle repeats the next time you feel stressed, bored, lonely, or frustrated. And unfortunately, in this modern environment, life is more stressful than ever. Work, family, social pressure, and constant notifications. Years of restriction has made food feel like a reward instead of fuel. But you can rewire your brain back to its natural state where food is no longer in control. Discovery three, diets make everything worse, especially over 40. For years, you've been told that the answers to weight loss is simple. Eat less and move more.
