Midlife Glow-Up Starts Inside
SPEAKER_02There's a moment that I realized I was done to hear this term a lot giving your light, but really trying to pull that inner glow from inside of me and really let it shine was probably about two years after I left my marriage priority is your health, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like you can't do shit unless you feel good, unless your body feels good. And so those are things that are really important to me. I look at this stuff now at our age and I'm like, I just I can envision what I know now when I was 35. And I'm like, what the fuck? I thought I was on fire then. You know, I did.
SPEAKER_02I thought I was I thought I was on fire then, and it's like the things I know now, oh my god, because all of these things come into play to make that a fact for women when you start being more yourself in midlife. That's hot itself. It is hot itself. Hey, real quick before we dive in. If you're a woman in midlife who's tired of the cliches and ready to live out loud, we're glad you're here.
SPEAKER_00Because you are definitely in the right place. We're not here to age gracefully, we're here to age boldly. So if you love real talk, big laughs, and the occasional spicy truth bomb, make sure to follow us on TikTok at Spicy Midlife Women for even more unfiltered midlife magic.
SPEAKER_02All right, everybody.
SPEAKER_00Let's get into it, Michelle.
SPEAKER_02Let's get into
Style And Inner Confidence Link
SPEAKER_02this episode. It's all about Michelle being in midlife. Just all of us women. Hot as hell in midlife.
SPEAKER_00And we're not really talking about hot flashes there. No. No. We're talking about having a glow-up, like a glow-up that is external but also internal. So you hear about glow-ups all the time, and they're really talking about like, oh, a new hairdo, or, you know, like a new outfit or whatever. But it's like one goes hand in hand with the other. And we've been talking about this because we talk a lot about what's going on on the inside, but we're both kind of of the opinion that how you present yourself on the outside directly affects your confidence and how you view things on the inside. So it's kind of two things, I think. It's not a shallow thing.
SPEAKER_02They go hand in hand, just like you said. Yeah. And I think in when we get to midlife, it's when you talk about a glow up, it's kind of making the comparison from earlier in life, right? When things were a little more superficial. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00To a certain degree. Well, you didn't have necessarily the knowledge or experience to understand it differently. Right. Right. So you just all you're looking at is what you see. It's not necessarily what's going on in here.
SPEAKER_02Well, and and that's where as you move through life and you get to midlife, things definitely are more soulful.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_02And not superficial. We're starting to recognize some of those deeply rooted things that matter and bringing them out so you know, you're you can be seen. You know, we've talked about that.
SPEAKER_00I think that's a really tough thing for well, people in general to do, but women in general, I'm saying from my experience, I think that's tough because when you're going through the next to the next to the next everything in life, you know, that's like the last thing that you really focus on. You know, it's like you put on a good show on the outside, but what's going on on the inside people don't know about. Right. Right. So when we say glow up, we say glow up. It's like let's talk about what really changes when you get into midlife and uh you know how you can capitalize on making that shift from that sounded like a Republican.
SPEAKER_02How I can capitalize on but uh how you can make that shift from pleasing, like you were talking about, and and so much of the things that we do that or that we did do earlier on, we still do it, but for the most part earlier on in life, to embodying what that is all about. Do you think w do you think it really changes?
SPEAKER_00Like, do you think that and I'm just asking you this question because it just came to mind the people pleasing aspect
People Pleasing To Self Priority
SPEAKER_00of things? Because I definitely have those tendencies. I do too. I get it. And some of that just comes from it's a nurturing thing. I think women have more of those tendencies than men in some respects too, just from my experience. But where do you think that you end up in midlife with that? Because do you think that you evolve out of it or people evolve out of the people pleasing thing, or is it something that's just going to be inherent in your personality?
SPEAKER_02I I think it is an intentional shift that you need to make happen if you want that to happen, if you are recognizing some of those things in midlife, because I I continue to to please people. I I still do that. That's the nature of who I am. But at the same time, I recognize that and I am shifting to prioritizing my own wants and needs and desires.
SPEAKER_00And not from a selfish no, not from a selfish people around you might think it is that way, but I think that the clarity on all of this stuff people pleasing, you know, glowing up on the inside versus the outside, or or the other way around, you know, these are all things that have hit me anyway, like a lightning bolt, you know, with the hormones that have been coming, the identity revolution, or evolution, I should say, you know, when we've kind of realized that we are not the people that we thought we were. Then it's a revolution, right? Yeah. You go through that evolution and then it's a revolution. Yeah. And it's like you start dressing differently, you start behaving differently, all those kinds of things, and it's like it's different to other people, but to you, it's like it's all kind of been there, and now it's just you're starting to let things emerge.
SPEAKER_02It's that awakening that we talk about. Um, and and putting that label on it because the the crisis that you you know, that label's been on midlife for a long time. And I think it's pretty great that at this time in this day and age, it's being recognized as an awakening. There's all of these things that women are encouraged to, you know, embrace, recognize, intentionally act on so that because they're because there's an expectation, you mean for them to do that? Well, no, I I I mean they're doing that because it's an awakening, because they recognize now, yeah, it's okay to say no. Oh, I think so many of the things that we talk about, because for decades that cultural conditioning and the expectations that are set, you know, it's no wonder that in midlife we're feeling this tug of war within us, you know, and start to expose that evolution so that it, you know, and it's almost like it's almost like a rebellion that takes place.
SPEAKER_00The I don't, it's like literally, I give zero fucks, is what it really it is
Awakening And Zero F’s Rebellion
SPEAKER_00like you can go from literally one extreme to the other. And I've met women just recently that they're, you know, probably our age, maybe a little bit younger, and they haven't discovered a lot of this stuff.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00And it's pretty evident to me, maybe because we're so, you know, obviously talk about this stuff a lot and we're around people who have already experienced some of these things. But when I when I've seen, I see people that need that confidence boost, or you know, they don't really feel confident in how they appear to others, how they speak to others, the level of confidence that comes out, you know, when you're making decisions and you just don't see it in some of these people. And I'm just like, I just want to grab them and go, really, it's all there. You can do it, you know. And anyway, it just kind of something that I thought about because I think the cultural conditioning is so huge. And when you talk about generations before us, yeah, you know, the cultural conditioning is what it is, and women knew it, you know, it's like women knew it. They knew, quote, what their place was in the home, they knew what their job was, what their role was, and a lot of the societal expectations that were out there just they just kind of went the easy route because that was the route to go. And then you see the women who, you know, have the burn the bra era, you know, or the era of, you know, I'm choosing me first, and it's so counter-cultural in a lot of ways. I I think it's starting to become more just more prevalent, and so it's not as big of a shock to me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, yeah, we don't get we don't necessarily get out there and burn bras anymore. We just really use it.
SPEAKER_00No, because they're really expensive and they're very pretty. I'm not burning a damn thing.
SPEAKER_02But after that fitting, no way. No way, yeah. Um but it it's you know, it's become more widespread and acknowledged, and the things that go on in midlife, you know, are being more embraced, I think, by women because of the awareness that's out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh like our podcast and people talking about so many different things so that women know that it's okay how they're feeling. It's okay to question things that you know they might have conflict on going on within them.
SPEAKER_00It's okay. We do. And other podcasts out there, they all say it's okay. But then you get off the podcast and you are, you know, grocery shopping and coming home, and it's a whole different environment. And so I think that's where the the segue needs to happen, you know, from someone's like real life to the way that they're thinking on the inside and taking those things and applying them on the outside.
SPEAKER_02But don't it don't you say that I I mean, I I think about myself. That was me in my 40s, late 30s, going through my 40s, uh, doing the things that you were just saying in the throes of being a working mom, raising children, you know, teenagers at that time. And, you know, you you do have all these things and questions that are going on, you know, inside you, like it wants this is this all there is? Wants, needs, and desires. Does it get better? Is it, you know, not that everything's terrible. No, but you know, there's just things that a woman, as a woman, needs that might be going unmet, and you maybe don't have time to like you sacrifice a lot of things. You do sacrifice a lot of those things.
SPEAKER_00So, Shell, you look at this stuff now though. It's like I look at this stuff now at our age, and I'm like, I just I can envision what I know now when I was 35. And I'm like, what the fuck? I would and I thought I was on fire then, you know. I did. I thought I was I thought I was on fire then. And it's like the things I know now, my God, yeah. It's like I speaking of fires, it's like I know there's a lot of those going on in Washington State right at the moment, so maybe that's not the best way, but to say it. But I mean, we would have been so incredibly unstoppable knowing what we know now. But I also know that the environment's changed some too, you know.
SPEAKER_02That's that's what I mean. The uh the awareness and how things have evolved for women, yeah. The awareness of you know, menopause and the the the changes that start happening, the awareness to how we're feeling during empty nesting and and things like that, the liberation of
Pleasure And Normalizing Desire
SPEAKER_02no longer being the caretaker in 24-7. Or for choosing pleasure, or for choosing pleasure.
SPEAKER_00That's we can talk about pleasure. Pleasure can be a lot of different things, it doesn't have to necessarily be sexual pleasure, but we're just gonna talk about that for a second. Okay. Well, again, this is not something that when you're talking glow up, women have discussed. I mean, they don't talk about, oh my god, I've never had an orgasm before because they don't really know what they don't know, or they're not talking about giving guidance to their partner because they feel like their partner would be offended. Yeah, you know, they didn't do any of that stuff. I didn't do any of that stuff. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I I anyway, so when you when you're thinking about pleasure, because you know this is a very fun topic, I love talking about. Michelle does too. She loves self-pleasure, she loves talking about self-pleasure. She's blushing. Oh my god. She's very good at talking about it. Yeah, very good at talking about it. It's all good. It's just something that I feel like we need to talk about more and more uh openly and in a way to where it seems very normal. I mean, it is normal.
SPEAKER_02It is but it's not, yeah.
SPEAKER_00I I know what you're saying. I mean, if I bring up something in front of my kids, I I'll do it just to make them feel uncomfortable. Your kids? Yeah, yeah. Hell yeah. I don't I don't I don't. Well, it's you know, like my oldest. He's kind of like, yeah, mom, you're and I just and I I'll say little things to him and he'll just like, oh, you can just feel his butt cheeks. Cringe, yeah. Cringe. But I do it on purpose. Yeah. But anyway, this topic is something that truly, truly needs to be much more prevalent with women our age and just in general, starting younger. So you know, women aren't feeling like it's weird.
SPEAKER_02I think women have been getting louder, yeah, hell yeah, hotter. Like we're the the the you know, what we decided to title this episode Hot as Hell in Midlife, because all of these things come into play to make that effect for women, you know, when you start being more yourself in midlife, that's hot as hell. It is hot as hell.
SPEAKER_00You know, I think I think when you look at confidence, just in general, which we've talked about, having confidence is hot as hell. When you're looking at a man who is arrogant, for example, he knows he's hot as shit. I don't like that. Yeah, you know, but when you're looking at a woman who carries herself in such a nice way and can walk into the room un unfurni un unfeathered, you know, yeah, be able to have conversations with different people. I'm like, damn, that girl's got a several.
SPEAKER_02Same with guys. I know. It's just they get this chip on their shoulder a lot of the time, and it's interesting.
SPEAKER_00Women honestly, when I see men walk into the room, it looks more to me than when women walk in. It does.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it goes both ways.
SPEAKER_00I think women could be like that sometimes. I totally pay attention, don't you? Yeah, I do. You pay attention to what women that walk into the room and how they carry themselves and stuff. I'm like, she's got it going on.
SPEAKER_02Well, and when we're thinking of, you know, hot as hell, I was seeing this thing where confidence plus competence equals combustion. So there you go. Hot, hot, hot.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god. Yeah. Hot, hot, hot. Yeah. So anyway, I I of course wanted to talk about choosing pleasure, but you know, there's also creativity and you know, rest when you need rest. You know, part of part of glowing up is being able to tell people or tell yourself what you need without feeling like you're
Rest, Health, And Reinvention
SPEAKER_00letting people down.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I definitely have more of a glow when I can rest.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And get the rest that I need. There's no extra baggage under one eye or the other, you know, because you haven't had enough sleep or rest. And rest can be a lot of different things, just like pleasure can be. Yeah. I think there's emotional rest, you know, there's the rest from stress, there's physical rest. Yeah. You know, there's I think a lot of different aspects to that too. Yeah. So I agree. Yeah, keep keep that in mind. But I think some of the things too that women start doing differently during this time of of midlife and you know, that contribute to the glow up is reinventing your identity also. I I mean, that's where all this stuff, when you start doing some of the things we've been talking about, that's kind of what what you're doing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, you are reinventing yourself. Yes. You're kind of in your second chapter or third chapter. I mean, when you think about it, we are in midlife. It's like you've got probably less years ahead of you, which we've talked about than you have behind you. Not saying that in a negative way, but it's more like all of the things that you've learned and the things that you didn't know. Right. And now you kind of know. And so you get to choose. You know, it's like priority, priority, priority is your health, in my opinion. It's like you can't do shit unless you feel good, unless your body feels good. And so those are things that are really important to me because I want to be able to walk into that time frame in my life and be able to do the things I want to do, say the things I want to do, go the places I want to go. So a lot of that has to do with the glow up too, yeah, in my in my mind, because you're you're really projecting kind of the vision that you have for the next 25, 30 years, you know, when you're when you're planning ahead, like
What We Wish We Knew
SPEAKER_00right now.
SPEAKER_02So let me ask you this. What's something you wish you knew at 25? Oh god. That you that you know now, or you know.
SPEAKER_00You know, Michelle, I gotta be honest with you. At at that age, I was in a position where I felt like everything's going the way it's supposed to. Like I just thought that things were supposed to be a certain way. Yeah. You do this, you get a good job, you get married, you have a baby, you buy a house, you do. I mean, just like literally in this order. And I think a lot of it's just the way we're raised, right?
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_00And none of that happened for me. Well, I I shouldn't say that, none of it happened, but things happened which destroyed a lot of those thought processes. So, meaning my, you know, the son that I had that that passed away. So I started looking at things from a much more deliberate perspective after that because I was so disillusioned by the fact that, you know, I wasn't protected by these thoughts that I thought my life would be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So what do I what do I wish I knew then that I know, gosh, that everything was gonna be okay. I at and at that time I didn't necessarily think that it was. So that was me. I mean, and that, you know, I could I could really conquer the world. And it's like I think a lot of the things that I expected would be that I would be conquering the world with a partner, with my partner, but it really wasn't like that at all. It was like keeping your head above water, try you know, paying the bills, going to work, daycare, you know, it was just like a constant cycle of just the same routine over and over again, you know. So I would say that the 35-year-old me had a better understanding, you know.
SPEAKER_02Right. How about you? Well, it's it's interesting that you say um that the one key phrase that you said was knowing that everything is gonna be okay. So and it's inter it's funny because I say that now and I mean still everything's like not okay. But I there's still survivable. But I guess what I wish I knew at 25 that I know now is that I'm I I I can handle it. It maybe not so much that it's gonna be okay, but that I can handle it. I'm gonna get through things and I'm continuing to move on through this journey, and it's it's all good.
SPEAKER_00Jessica, I didn't know you when you were 25, but were you that person who just put your head down and got scrappy and just did what you needed to do?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02In in all aspects, yeah. I think I had two kids at that time.
SPEAKER_00I was 25. Yeah. Oh my god. Yeah, you know, I don't I didn't have all of mine until, well, by the time I was 35, I think I had them all. But that was when I really realized, you know, that there was a completely different person out there. It's like having I I had my last child, I ate way too much ice cream. I gained so much weight, I was so uncomfortable, so unhappy. And I just was like, I am just making this happen, you know, after having and I know a lot of women go through this because their bodies, it's like we just we donate our bodies. You know, it's a pretty big miracle if you think about it. It's incredible. It is. Yeah, it's like we're growing these little babies in us and all this stuff. And it's like, but there's so many things that go along with that that you don't really think about when you're having the baby. It's like everything that you're having to do in terms of dedicating your time pushing a watermelon out of the keyhole. Or cutting your stomach open and having them that way, you know. But everything that comes after that, right? And so you you don't really you lose yourself very quickly because you're you're invested in having perfection for this little human that you're you're trying to take care of.
Leaving Marriage And Owning Choices
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You know. So anyway, epiphany moments were happening after I had my children, I would think.
SPEAKER_02I mean, that's I yeah, if there's a moment that I realized I was done, you know, you hear this term a lot, dimming your light, but really trying to pull that inner glow from inside of me and really let it shine was probably about two years after I left my marriage. So you were nowhere near 25 at that point.
SPEAKER_00No, no, I was like you were in your forties.
SPEAKER_02I was in my forties, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, early forties. But it did it feel like at the time like you could breathe again? Not for a while. Okay. How long did that take? That took probably 10 years. Wow, really that long? Yeah. Oh my god, I felt like I could breathe again almost immediately. And it's not like I was being suffocated, it was more kind of like the end of an era and I was ready, it was like a clean slate. That's how I looked at it.
SPEAKER_02I I mean there there are aspects that sure felt like I could breathe again, you know, things were lighter, but there was still a lot that was going on. And and so that's why I say 10 years. It's you know, I would say five years into, you know, which I said two years after I left my marriage, I started really recognizing that I had more within me that I I was capable of and that I wanted to really hold on to and pull through, if you will. But yeah, and I would say five years after that, you know, a couple years after that, two years, you know, so five years after leaving, I was really starting to get a feel for for the things that I was capable of and who I really was, and recognizing that and being outward with it and being a little bit louder about it and being okay with that. And yeah, people were questioning some of maybe. When she was 25, she didn't get to party, so now she's partying, and I'm like, oh for God's sake, I'm dancing big I yeah, I know, and and that's that's that's part of that evolution that started happening and my never never settle era. I've talked about that before. And you know, so then through the next five years after that, then I then I really started to getting a hang of myself.
SPEAKER_00You know, I know you think you know, right? You think you know who you are, and we've talked about this before, but you don't know who the hell you are because you've obviously kind of lost yourself. And so when you get when you get to the point where you're like, I really need to kind of almost reinvent who I am, reinvent, take the pieces of me that I know are really, really good and established, and I feel super. confident about and then just you know figure out what the other components are and work on those but at the same time you know you're trying to still take care of kids you're still working you're still trying to you know live your life and everything so it it's a time it takes time it does take time and and that was during that 10 years that's where my intuition got sharper yeah my happiness and joy was much more deeper and full did you take turns and now we're kind of going into this a little bit I know but I'm just curious about it's like you know I did not have a clear trajectory I just thought everything's cool everything's fine everything's gonna move forward I even remember writing this oh I don't know it was like on my iPad I just wrote this like vision of what I thought my future was gonna be uh and it's like I'm talking about how I've had this little house and my kids were hanging out and I had my dogs and it was basically kind of the same similar to what is happening with me now yeah but to me it was like now I look at that and I'm like all I wanted was peace.
SPEAKER_02That's so interesting that you explain it like that or that you did that because you're such a planner. I know but it's like that doesn't surprise me at all that you did that because you are such a planner and so you were kind of planning your future. Yeah me I'm just like free flowing I just you know go go with the flow fly by the seat of my pants sometimes people think I I don't really try to look too much far forward to figure it out.
SPEAKER_00I just really kind of am just go in the but you were making a lot of decisions on your own too it's like I would make I mean I was to the point where I was making decisions on my own. Yeah. When it came to like financial decisions and stuff obviously I was making the not doing those but as after when I was on my own I was like I could do anything I wanted. Yeah I could make any decision I wanted I could buy this house I could do this I could do that you know yeah whatever it was and it's like I kind of went a little overboard with my you know the house that I'm in now. And but I remember thinking that it's like I got this I I've totally got this and I look back on it going my God how did I get through that part of my my glow up era in one piece. Yeah. Because I was like I thought everything was fine but you know I look at it now and I'm like girl yeah you know it was not fine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah you know but I think as we do that I I think midlife women as they're going on that journey definitely inspire other women right by you know by doing that and by living fully you do inspire other women and I saw this thing
Inspiring Others And Closing CTA
SPEAKER_02the other day and it it it kind of was like made me smile for one thing. But it was about being in your 50 I'm not dressing like I'm 25. You know what it's like a 50 year old woman you know dressing actually really cool and and trendy I'm not doing this to try to look like I'm 25. I'm doing this so the 25 year olds know and have something to look forward to when they're in their 50s. Right.
SPEAKER_00And I where they can see that it's like you're you don't have to have you know blue hair and wear a house coat. Right. I mean literally this is some of the stuff that they would do you know it's like this is just what women do yeah I I was I saw something on Instagram as a woman she was like in her late 60s oh my God she was so fine. She looked so good. And she was talking about how the things that she did now she had done she'd been doing for a while you know in terms of taking care of herself and everything. And it was just this level of calmness that she had and she was like almost 70. Uh-huh and but she's still out there doing all the things that she was doing and it's like I looked at her and I'm just like I want to be her yeah you know I want to have that mindset and you know that just she could just tell she was in internally very very happy very happy and probably very much at peace.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And that is noticeable and I love how that inspires other women just like it did you. Yeah. I I think that's great.
SPEAKER_00So I mean all the more important reason ladies for you to really live authentically unapologetically grasp that midlife glow up and be hot as hell right because it's gonna inspire and we're not yeah not hot flash hot as hell we we can if you want to be hot flash hot as hell you're welcome to be but we're just saying it's like just live the life you want you know it's like if you want to be hot as hell you probably are and no matter what it's like you as long as you think you are that's all that really matters.
