Jul 03, 2023

Hey there, welcome to the NorthStar Physical Therapy podcast!

I am your host, Dr. Shirlea North and I dive into lymphedema, lipedema, and various pelvic health dysfunctions. My goal is to provide to you a better way to understand these conditions so that you empower yourself with knowledge to advocate for yourself. Let NorthStar Physical Therapy guide and navigate you on your journey to optimal health!

In this episode, we will be talking about your pelvic floor muscles and how everyone has them. Men and women have pelvic floor muscles so I want to share about what goes on in that area of our body in the musculoskeletal sense.

Everyone has pelvic floor muscles and everyone deserves a comprehensive assessment by a pelvic floor therapist. So please give this episode a listen to know more about the importance of getting your pelvic floor assessed for its optimal health!

Let’s discuss:

  • Introduction to the topic
  • What you need to know about pelvic floor muscles
  • Where are the pelvic floor muscles located
  • The three bones that comprise the pelvic floor muscle
  • The structural difference of the male and female genitalia
  • The different layers of the pelvic floor region
  • How pelvic floor therapists conduct internal assessment for both men and women
  • Glands, sensory receptors, nerves, lymph nodes, and internal organs in the pelvic floor region and the potential different conditions that may occur
  • Breathing and the pelvic floor muscle groups
  • Changing how the pelvic floor muscle groups are oriented
  • Simple functional mobility tasks that pelvic floor therapists assess to check if the pelvic floor is functioning well
  • Summary
