#17: Breast Cancer and Lymphedema treatment
Oct 09, 2023

Hey there, welcome to the NorthStar Physical Therapy podcast!

I am your host, Dr. Shirlea North and I dive into lymphedema, lipedema, and various pelvic health dysfunctions. My goal is to provide to you a better way to understand these conditions so that you empower yourself with knowledge to advocate for yourself. Let NorthStar Physical Therapy guide and navigate you on your journey to optimal health!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this is a topic that I hold really close to my heart. I created this episode because I work with many patients who have active breast cancer diagnoses or are in remission. The topic for today will center on the relationship between breast cancer and Lymphatic treatments.

Lymphedema may be the side effect of the treatment from any kind of cancer. That is why I will be sharing with you, too, why having a Certified Lymphedema Therapist is important to be part of a breast cancer team.

So please give this episode a listen so that you are empowered with the information that you need. Go ahead and share this podcast episode to someone you love and needs to hear all about this!

Let’s discuss:

  • Introduction to today’s topic
  • What is Lymphedema
  • Checking the data: How many women in the United States get diagnosed with breast cancer
  • Breast cancer affects BOTH men and women
  • The seven common types of breast cancer
  • The several types of treatments for breast cancer
  • The relationship between the Lymphatic system and the cells that causes breast cancer
  • What the data shows in terms of how many breast cancer patients develop some stage of lymphedema
  • The stages of Lymphedema
  • Why is it important to have a Certified Lymphedema Therapist as a part of the breast cancer team
  • Conclusion
