#20: Do I Need Pelvic Floor Therapy If I'm a Guy?
Nov 20, 2023
Hey there, welcome to the NorthStar Physical Therapy podcast!

I am your host, Dr. Shirlea North and I dive into lymphedema, lipedema, and various pelvic health dysfunctions. My goal is to provide to you a better way to understand these conditions so that you empower yourself with knowledge to advocate for yourself. Let NorthStar Physical Therapy guide and navigate you on your journey to optimal health!

Today we will be talking about the pelvic floor issues that men also suffer from. My first goal for this episode is I want you to know that you are not alone and it is truly normal for men to also have issues in their pelvic floor area because, as I always say, EVERYONE has a pelvis. My next goal is to encourage you to seek help so you can live your life pain-free!

Please share this podcast episode with someone you love and need to hear all about this!

Let’s discuss:

  • Introduction to today’s topic
  • Two goals that I have with this podcast episode
  • A clinical case scenario of a male struggling with pelvic floor-related issues: Looking into the symptoms, lifestyle and habits, and struggles
  • What I prescribed and did with a male client struggling with pelvic floor issues
  • The importance of looking into the big picture when dealing with patients’ symptoms
  • A quick male anatomy lesson
  • Areas of consideration when treating patients with pelvic floor issues
  • How oftentimes the pelvic floor is over-generalized, what it actually really is, and its composition
  • The questions I usually ask male patients who come in with lower back pain
  • Why and how a pelvic floor therapist should approach men differently for them to have a professional yet comfortable experience
  • Some assessments you need to expect when walking into a physical therapist’s clinic
  • Conclusion
