Every process in our bodies is dictated by light signals in our environment. All of our hormones, including all the sex hormones like pregnenolone,  testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone, the hormones for alertness like cortisol and adrenaline, the thyroid hormones and ATP production, the sleep hormone melatonin, the energy and fat regulation hormones leptin and insulin, the mood and reward system regulation hormones serotonin and dopamine, and literally ALL other hormones in the body are produced based on the body's biological clock - which is informed by light signals throughout the day. 

Infrared at sunrise and sunset, UVA light at mid-morning and mid-afternoon, UVB light during mid-day (UVB is NOT bad for us, it's an important signal that we need and safe exposure to it has been shown to increase testosterone levels) are all crucial signals that tell our brain what chemical processes to do and when. 

Light affects digestion, it tells our bodies when we should be eating versus when we should be sleeping. It affects fertility in a major way, due to the impact it has on our hormones. We say "circadian rhythm health," but in reality, circadian rhythm health = overall health. It majorly affects our sleep quality - without light in your eyes in the morning, your bodies doesn't start building up tryptophan, which gets converted into serotonin throughout the day, which then gets converted into melatonin at night. Without adequate light exposure, there isn't enough melatonin to trigger sleepiness. This is further exacerbated by exposure to biologically disruptive artificial blue lights at inappropriate times throughout the day.
