Electrolytes are suddenly everywhere, and the pitch is bold: you need a packet to lift, run, recover, and sometimes to simply get through the day. We’re not buying blanket claims. We walk through what electrolytes actually are, why sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride matter for hydration, muscles, nerves, and heart rhythm, and why that truth gets twisted into “everyone is deficient” marketing.

We get practical with real-world context: how sweat losses change with heat, humidity, intensity, genetics, and sport, plus why sodium is the most important electrolyte for longer training. We also talk about why most people already eat plenty of sodium, making high-sodium electrolyte supplements a risky habit for some, especially anyone who is salt sensitive or concerned about blood pressure. And yes, there are dangers on the other side too: overdrinking fluids can contribute to exercise-associated hyponatremia, a serious condition that proves “more hydration” is not always better.

If you train for hours, compete in endurance events, work in extreme heat, or deal with vomiting or diarrhea, electrolyte replacement can be evidence-based and helpful. But if you’re doing a short, moderate workout, you may be better served by water, a balanced meal, and a calmer relationship with normal physiology. Why Electrolytes Are Everywhere

Yo plant days buddies, welcome back to season three of the podcast. This year's gonna be amazing. We'll be talking about all of the different pillars of lifestyle medicine from nutrition to exercise to stress to sleep and everything in between. Yo, plant days buddies, welcome back to another episode of the podcast. Today we're gonna be talking about one of the fastest growing trends in the wellness industry, electrolytes. So whether you're talking about electrolyte powders or hydration packets, sports drinks, salt packets, or recovery powders, they're pretty much all the same. Now, I'm not saying they're good or bad, I'm saying context matters. And although everything seemed to revolve around protein powders and protein bars a few years ago, it sounds like the wellness industry has pivoted towards electrolytes. Honestly, the marketing has been quite effective in convincing people that they need this powder or potion to function normally or to exercise or to recover. We've been convinced that our normal physiology is broken and in some way optimization requires these powders. But the reality is that for most people, electrolyte supplements are completely unnecessary. They are useful in certain specific situations, but for most people, they're not. So today we're gonna break down this topic practically. We'll talk about electrolytes, what they actually are, why your body needs them, how much you lose during exercise, how much you should add back through supplementation, and we'll talk about sodium and the risk of overdoing it. And also, we'll talk about why the wellness industry has turned normal physiology into some kind of perceived deficiency. This topic has become very overcomplicated online. So let's start with basics. Electrolytes are simply minerals. They're minerals that carry an electrical charge when you dissolve them in fluid. The major ones that we already know: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride, they all play critical roles in managing fluid balance, in contracting muscles, signaling nerves. They they play a role in blood pressure regulation, heart rhythm, and acid-base balance. So without electrolytes, your body could not function properly. And this is why marketing has become so convincing. Because electrolyte physiology is real and it's important. But the problem is that companies, wellness industry, often will take a legitimate biological concept and exaggerate its importance for the average person. And this is where we need to have some context, some nuance, because lately I've been getting a lot more questions either in

Electrolytes Explained In Plain English

the clinic or on social media about whether or not electrolyte supplements could help people. Now we've even heard of cases where a woman that was drinking liquid IVs, which are electrolyte supplements, throughout the day, actually passed away because of excessive exposure to electrolytes. So not just can they be dangerous, they can be life-threatening. So people ask, should I be drinking electrolytes every day? Do I need them for my workout? Is water not enough anymore? And will I end up dehydrated if I don't use them? Now, honestly, social media has convinced a lot of healthy people that normal sweating is now some kind of deficiency or under optimization. But according to most major nutrition organizations, routine electrolyte supplementation is not recommended for the general public that's consuming a normal, balanced diet outside of very specific situations. Most people are already getting enough electrolytes directly through the food that they eat, and that replaces the normal daily losses that people have through normal physiology and moderate exercise. And that's the most important point. The body is remarkably great at maintaining electrolyte balance. We evolved with sweating, it's not a disease, and it's not automatically going to put you in a deficiency of electrolytes. Now, when you sweat, you lose water, you lose electrolytes, but we have very sophisticated hormonal systems that are designed to regulate this. Aldosterone, antidiuretic hormone, the rhinin angiotensin system. These systems they're continuously adjusting fluid retention and sodium balance to preserve muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and blood pressure. Now, does exercise increase electrolyte losses? Absolutely, but the context matters because the amount you lose will

Your Body Regulates Balance Well

depend on the intensity of your exercise, the heat and humidity, genetics, your sweat rate, and the type of sport and environment that you're working out in. And this is where the conversation can become very interesting because during an about a one-hour session of intense exercise, the average person can lose anywhere from 450 to 1200 milligrams of sodium. That's a very wide range with an almost threefold difference. Most people will be somewhere in between, but a lot of different factors will determine whether you're losing 450 or 1200 milligrams of sodium. As for chloride is quite similar, most people are losing between 400 and 1100 milligrams per hour of intense exercise. Potassium, people are losing a lot less, about 120 to 300 milligrams per hour. Calcium about 15 to 40 milligrams, and magnesium about 6 to 20 milligrams. Now, when people hear these numbers, especially with sodium, some panic, but remember that most people in North America already are consuming way too much sodium daily. Most people are consuming well over 3,000 to 3400 milligrams of sodium daily without even realizing it. So when someone does a 45-minute moderate intensity workout, they probably don't need an additional thousand milligrams of sodium into an electrolyte powder. Right? Now, you have to ask yourself, are these additional thousand milligram sodium packets helping physiology? Or are we simply responding to the fear created by marketing? And for most recreational exercisers or weekend warriors, plain water and a normal meal is more than enough. And so that's especially true if your workouts are short, if your workouts are of moderate intensity or less, casual gym sessions, walking, cycling, or short runs. Now that doesn't mean that electrolyte supplementation

What You Lose When Sweating

is useless. Far from that. There are absolutely situations where electrolyte replacement is important and is evidence-based. And this is where all of these nuances start to matter. People that are doing endurance exercise that lasts for over two hours, they will significantly lose fluids and sodium. So talk about long-distance runners, iron men athletes, ultra-endurance cyclists, or marathonners that are training in high heat. These athletes are losing enormous amounts of sodium. And genetically, some people are simply salty sweaters. You'll see white stains on their shirts, hats, or even skin after exercise. And these individuals can lose dramatically higher amounts of sodium than the average person. So in those cases, targeted electrolyte replacement can absolutely improve performance, recovery, hydration, the risk of having cramps and heat intolerance. So if you're considering supplementing with electrolytes, consider that it may only help during prolonged exercise and incre in intense heat, during the first few days after heat acclimatization, during recovery, when you're trying to maybe fit two workouts in the same day. I remember when I was training for the World Ninja Championships, I used to do a resistance training session and ninja session in the morning, and then in the afternoon at night, I typically ran a 10K. In these situations, I would benefit from electrolytes. Also think about illnesses involving vomiting or diarrhea. And this is where electrolytes can be useful. But online we seem to only see the extreme. One side will say electrolytes are a scam, and the other side says that everyone is deficient and should be supplementing. Now the reality is probably somewhere in the middle, and the right tool depends on the situation and understanding everyone's own context. So let's start by talking specifically about sodium because sodium is by far the most clinically important electrolyte during exercise. And it's become one of the most misunderstood nutrients online. I remember for years people were terrified of sodium because of its link with high blood pressure, it increases the risk of stomach cancer when consumed in excess. And you know that hypertension is one of the major risk factors for stroke and for heart attacks, the top killer in the world. But now suddenly the whole wellness

Who Actually Needs Supplementation

culture flipped completely and says sodium is essential optimization. Now, some electrolyte supplements that contain up to 500 to 1,000 milligrams in one single serving. And people are consuming them during short gym sessions, light yoga, office work, and one of my patients was consuming them before taking a walk. Now, at some point, we need to ask ourselves whether we're solving an actual physiological problem or if over-optimization has gone too far. Because excessive sodium intake will still matter. It does increase hypertension in some individuals that are sensitive to sodium. And hypertension is one of the most important risk factors for one of the top killers in the world. So we need to understand that sodium physiology is complicated and not everyone responds identically to the same sodium intake. Some individuals are more salt sensitive than others. And athletes that are training intensely in heat clearly will have a different sodium requirement than a sedentary individual that's sitting at a desk. But this idea that everyone constantly needs electrolyte replacement has very little evidence behind it. And honestly, the wellness industry has become very skilled at making normal biology seem like a pathology. Normal fatigue has become adrenal fatigue, and normal sweating has become electrolyte depletion, and people that are hungry is because of blood sugar and hormonal dysregulation. And suddenly people that are healthy start believing that they actually require expensive powders and supplements simply to function normally. More electrolytes are not always better, and even excessive water intake itself can become very dangerous under certain conditions. There's a condition called potomania that can lead to diluting your sodium to an extent where you have hyponutremia, which is life-threatening. And there's a condition called exercise-associated hyponatremia, where sodium levels become too low because of people overconsuming fluids relative to the sodium losses. And again, physiology requires balance and it requires understanding the context. And ironically, some people now consume more electrolytes during light exercise than elite endurance

Sodium Risks And Online Confusion

athletes were consuming decades ago. And that alone should make us pause and think about maybe we're there's a problem here. Now, I work out every day, my identity is roped into physical performance and exercising, and still I rarely supplement with electrolytes because my diet is plenty sufficient to provide me with all the electrolytes I need. Now that being said, in some endurance settings where I'm exercising for a long duration with heavy sweat loss and heat, I may use electrolytes because understand that my whole food plant-based diet is naturally by default very low in sodium. So I am not, in certain situations, hitting sodium requirements for the day on purpose. And so I use electrolytes in these situations, knowing that I'm going to lose sodium during intense exercise. And this is why sports medicine organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine recommend sodium-containing sports drinks for those who perform prolonged endurance events. Again, this applies to intense, prolonged endurance events. Not a 40-minute walk on a treadmill in an air-conditioned gym. Now, many electrolyte products end up being essentially expensive flavored salt water, and some are costing several dollars per serving. And that marketing will create fear around ordinary hydration, while many of the healthiest hydration strategies are pretty damn simple. Drink when you're thirsty, adjust the amount of intake of fluids for heat and exercise, make sure to eat potassium-rich foods and eat balanced meals. Whole foods, they naturally contain electrolytes. And if you're eating a healthy, balanced diet, you are likely getting all of the electrolytes you need. Think of potatoes and beans and fruits and veggies and nuts and seeds. Even regular meals after exercise can help restore electrolyte balance quite effectively. And honestly, one of the most underrated performance tools remains eating a healthy, balanced diet, progressively overloading, increasing the intensity of your exercise, and letting your own body adapt to fitness. As some people become heat acclimatized, the body will become more efficient and at conserving your sodium. And your body has evolved to adapt remarkably well to different circumstances. And this doesn't mean that all electrolyte products are useless. Some athletes will genuinely benefit from them. I can imagine roofers, firefighters, construction workers, farmers. Hyponatremia And Simple Hydration Rules

really extreme high heat exposure. But context always matters. But for the healthy, average individual performing normal, moderate intensity exercises while eating a normal diet, for most of these people, routine electrolyte supplementation is unnecessary. And I think that the conversation about electrolytes is not really about electrolytes. It's about a m it ref kind of reflects a much larger issue in modern wellness culture. And we've become obsessed with optimization. And now every normal physiological, biological process requires tracking and supplementation or a powder or a monitor or or biohacking. And sometimes health is actually much simpler when we stop trying to optimize normal human physiology. If people would just exercise regularly, sleep normally, eat mostly whole foods, most of the days over weeks and months and years, and hydrate and drink water when they're thirsty, and maybe adjust for heat and training demands, people would be fine. People don't need a neon-colored, orange-flavored electrolyte supplement to survive a spin class. We've gone too far. Your body already is one of the most sophisticated fluid regulation systems on earth. And I've seen patients having prolonged diarrhea, vomiting, malabsorption syndromes, very severe acute and chronic illnesses that have normal electrolyte and fluid balance because our body is built that way. Now, if we push physiology to extremes during exercise, high heat, or intense workouts, we may need to supplement. But in most cases, electrolyte supplements for the normal person is not necessary. And sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop assuming that normal physiology is broken and that needs human intervention. We've been convinced by marketing that health is a lot more complicated than it really is. But that being said, there are absolutely certain situations and certain people in certain contexts that will benefit from supplementing electrolytes. But most of the time it's probably not necessary.

The Bigger Problem With Optimization
