Millie Thomas & Olivia Soha

In this episode, we welcome back Carolyn Costin, a trailblazer in eating disorder recovery. Having recovered from her own eating disorder Carolyn's journey led her to create groundbreaking treatments, including Monte Nido, the first residential facility offering holistic care in a nurturing environment.

Today, we dive into Key 3 of Carolyn’s book “The 8 Keys to Recovery from an Eating Disorder: It's Not About the Food”. Carolyn unravels the complex web of factors contributing to eating disorders, challenging the oversimplified notion that they're just about food. She offers an insightful perspective on behaviour addiction, shifting the focus from food to underlying emotional and psychological patterns.

We also examine how societal pressures and media distort body image, discussing practical strategies for cultivating a healthier self-perception. Carolyn breaks down body image into perception, attitude, and behaviour, providing a holistic view of self-image.

Highlighting the role of genetics and environment, Carolyn uses the analogy, "genes load the gun, environment pulls the trigger," to explain the intricate dynamics at play in eating disorders. She also shares her approach to transforming personal traits from liabilities into assets, a testament to the power of positive change.
