Capturing Essence: The Art of Transformative Photography with Sophia Reamsnyder at the Whole YOU Retreat

Brenda Billings Ridgley Season 3 Episode 16

Have you ever looked at a photograph of yourself and felt it just didn't do your journey justice? Imagine a picture that could reflect not only your image but your essence, your growth, and your inner strength. That's the kind of transformative photography Sophia from Reamsnyder Media specializes in, and we had the pleasure of bringing her insights to our Whole You Retreat. Our conversation with Sophia is a heartwarming delve into the power of visual storytelling and how it can encapsulate our most profound life experiences. She shares her own path into the photography world—a pivot necessitated by health challenges—and how this led to a passion for capturing the transformative journeys of others.

During the episode, Sophia reveals her anticipation for the portrait sessions she'll be offering at the retreat, aiming to showcase the individual stories of each participant. It's a unique opportunity for guests to step in front of the lens and see themselves anew, through the eyes of an artist who believes in the beauty of every individual. Her approach isn't just about snapping candid shots; it's about engaging with each person, understanding their story, and translating that into a visual narrative. Listen in for an uplifting conversation that may inspire you to see your own story in a different light, and perhaps even through the lens of Sophia's camera.

Speaker 1:

Hello everybody. I am back again this afternoon evening almost with the lovely Sophia of Reem Snyder Media and we are so excited she is our event photographer at the Whole you Retreat this month and I just wanted to come and introduce her to everybody and introduce her business to everybody. And I just wanted to come in and introduce her to everybody and introduce her business to everybody and welcome Sophia.

Speaker 2:

Hi, it's so good to be here. Thank you.

Speaker 1:

Absolutely. This isn't your first run at the Whole you Retreat. You actually were our inaugural year photographer.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I was, and it was a great experience.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, way back in the day we were just figuring things out and saying, is this going to work or not? And it's kind of working.

Speaker 2:

It's working a lot, isn't it?

Speaker 1:

So, sophia, we asked her to come along to kind of capture the weekend with some candids. And just kind of capture the weekend with some candids and just kind of give us the just portray the vibe of what we got going on there. But she's also going to be helping out individual guests doing some like a headshot or style type of thing. First of all, before we dive into that I kind of got ahead of myself why don't we ask you to just kind of share a little bit about you and what got you into photography and why is it your passion and profession?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so I am Sophia Rehm-Snyder of Rehm-Snyder Media and we actually got into the business of photography. When I got sick a couple years ago, we realized that I needed something that was a lot more flexible, where I could dictate my own schedule, say yes or no to jobs, whatever it was I needed to do to make sure my health was a top priority. And then we kind of realized that we had some more wants that we wanted to do with our business to include video, and that's just been a really great transition and I love both aspects of it because I just really love telling a story, either pictures, video or words. It's really what I love to do and I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Speaker 1:

Oh yeah, we sure loved having you at our first event and I just can't tell you how excited I was when you said you were available to come this time. And we are expanding what you did last time from just kind of hanging around and taking pictures to taking a much more active and engaged role, right?

Speaker 2:

Yes, which I'm really excited about. It's always so interesting when we cover events, we kind of see the outside perspective of everything, unless we're actually doing portraits of people at the events. Then that builds a different kind of relationship that we have with guests, because now there's all this one-on-one interaction and maybe I tell them things that they wouldn't have otherwise known about me and it makes them feel more comfortable and there's just this really great exchange and I can't wait for that with this retreat.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So, beyond just being in our workshops and around snapping photos, what's your plan for your? You know what you're going to help the guests out with?

Speaker 2:

I'm hoping they'll want to do some portrait or headshot style photography, and I would like to do the majority of it outside, just because of the beautiful mountains that surround the area, and I just want to really show everybody's story through these pictures, show them how amazing they are as individuals, human beings, and just really help them believe that.

Speaker 1:

And that's what I hope to accomplish with these photos and just give them something that they can look back on, right, totally because they're going to completely open up and bloom and blossom during our time together and you're going to capture it for them and probably for many of these women. I know you already have some bookings and we're well on our way to having it all filled up, but you're going to be capturing them and maybe they haven't had a photo taken in a long time.

Speaker 2:

Yes, that I've actually heard that a lot, that it's been a really long time since they've been in front of the camera and there's been some really interesting exchanges about that that I can't wait to share with everybody at the retreat, just because of how long it's been since some of these ladies have had, you know, any kind of professional pictures done. So I can't wait to give them that new one and hope that they don't wait another 20 years to get another photograph.

Speaker 1:

Exactly because we're always worried about getting our kids in pictures and maybe a family picture here or there, and we're always in the back, you know. But to be a star of a little photo shoot, it's pretty special. I agree with that little photo shoot. It's pretty special. I agree with that. Awesome. So you actually, since you attended the first time back in 2002, you kind of didn't know really what you were getting into at the time and can you kind of just share your experience, you know back then, because our practitioners and service providers all fully engaged throughout the weekend in all of the workshops and stuff, and I just want to hear you know what you have to share about it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you know, I have to say I judged a book by its cover. I went in there thinking, oh my gosh, this is going to be some hippy dippy, weird stuff. I'm sorry, I thought that I really am, because once I got in there, it wasn't. It wasn't that at all, gosh, just my own personal experience. Even though I didn't take part in everything, I still took part in some fashion and it just lit a fire under me. It made me realize that I wanted to get these things done and I wanted to get them done now. And so being able to share that with other people who were feeling that same way was amazing. And just everybody there was so welcoming and there was not a bad conversation to be had between everybody that was there. And well, the mansion is just gorgeous, right.

Speaker 1:

There's that, and you can just come for that right, because it's well worth it. Just for that Did you get a chance to get in the 20-person Roman spa tub.

Speaker 2:

I did not. I hope to this time though, yes, you better.

Speaker 1:

It's pretty incredible. This time, though, yes, you better that's. It's pretty incredible. Brianna and I actually, after the last time we went, there was a little bit of snow on the ground and back and we got in the hot tub and then we jumped in the snow and that was really fun. And yeah, being mid-May, who knows, there may be some snow, it may be totally sunny and warm. It could be anything. This is Colorado, right.

Speaker 2:

Right, it's got some crazy weather.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So back to just your experience. And you said that it kind of lit a fire under you, and I just want to put a stake in the ground for women out there who, kind of like, always have this someday mentality, someday I'll get to that, someday it'll be about me, someday I'm going to do all these things, right, right, do you know? Women?

Speaker 2:

like that in your life. I do, and you know I've actually talked to them about this retreat because it really changed something in me and I don't know how to explain it in words. What changed in me. It was just something so incredibly special and, gosh, I just I wish I could put it into words for everybody, but I just can't, because it was really something else yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 1:

I get a lot of that speechlessness but there, but yeah, it's a feeling event. Yes, very much. So that's what. That's what jesse said she's. She says I'm a feeler, our massage therapist. She goes I'm feeler and I know how it felt, but it's hard to put to words. So, yeah, so awesome. Hey, so there are a few spots left. Give some encouragement to some women out there who are kind of sitting on the fence to get get one of those last spots.

Speaker 2:

Uh, yeah, you know this is going to be an amazing event. Um, just being around these ladies, um hearing their stories, is going to lead way to you sharing your stories and maybe unburdening yourself so that you can go out and do those things that you always said you were going to do, and this, this event, is a catalyst for that. So if you're looking to start, this is the place to start.

Speaker 1:

Yes, thank you. I love that, and it's also a place for healing, I found over the last few years. It's we all have a real little broken right. We all have some things that didn't go exactly as planned and it may maybe it kind of stopped us in our tracks and uh.

Speaker 1:

so we see a lot of healing and um lifelong friendships, um coming out the whole thing yeah for sure, one thing I meant to mention in correlation to you and your photography is that we have monica, the beautiful Monica, our stylist, along for the trip and she's doing little mini makeup and hair sessions with women to either teach them how to get it, update their look or whatever, or get ready for their photo shoot with you. So just to have camera ready, makeup, and then you don't need to edit them at all.

Speaker 2:

It's going to be amazing. I can't wait for that. I've never actually had camera ready makeup, and then you don't need to edit them at all. It's going to be amazing. I can't. I can't wait for that. I've never actually had camera ready makeup, so that's going to be. That's going to be amazing to work with.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be fun. You guys are going to have to stay connected after that too, I'm sure. Oh for sure, all right. Well, hey, this has been awesome to visit with you. We are going to be heading up the mountain in just over two weeks and I just can't wait to spend some quality time with you up there.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I'm so excited and we get to spend the whole drive together, so I'm excited about that too.

Speaker 1:

That's right, we're going to be carpool buddies, so fantastic. So everybody thanks again for checking in, and we're just going to say bye for now. Bye, thank you.
