The Not Your Mother's Pelvic Floor Podcast
Episode 82: Talking About Taboos with Pelvic Health Physical Therapist Nidhi Sharma
In Episode 82 of the Not Your Mother's Pelvic Floor podcast, Aliya chats with Pelvic Health Physical Therapist Nidhi Sharma all about the conversations she had growing up in India, taboos about periods, and the challenges of raising a child today.
In this episode, you'll hear Nidhi and Aliya chat about:
- Whether Nidhi wants her mother's pelvic floor...or not!
- What happened when Nidhi got her period for the very first time.
- Taboos surrounding periods, women's bodies, and sex in India where she grew up.
- How Nidhi grew up hiding her boyfriend in a culture where dating openly wasn't typically accepted.
- Her first experiences hearing others talk about periods so openly when she first moved to the US and why she is so passionate about having open conversations about our bodies both on and offline.
- How shame around women's bodies remains a pervasive part of culture in India and how Nidhi handles this when she returns home.
- Nidhi's experience as a "pandemic mom", having a baby in NYC in the height of Covid, the isolation of postpartum, and the struggles of sleep with a new baby.
- How Nidhi is breaking the cycle by teaching her young son about periods and normalizing "normal" things.
