Episode #43: Self-Care - Surrendering to Motherhood’s Ebb and Flow

Africa O. Season 6 Episode 43

Episode 43: Surrendering to Motherhood’s Ebb and Flow

This month on A Soulful Mom’s Wisdom, we’re exploring the quiet art of surrender… how loosening our grip and allowing life to shift can actually make the journey softer. Motherhood is a constant unfolding, and each new season asks something different of us. In today’s episode, we lean into that ever-changing rhythm and honor the truth that transitions happen whether we’re ready or not.

Guiding us is this beautiful quote from Africa O.:

“When your child enters a new stage of life, you do too. Even if you resist, the shift will happen.”

A gentle reminder wrapped in wisdom—change arrives like sunrise: inevitable, undeniable, illuminating.

I open this episode by reflecting on the constancy of transition. Motherhood never stands still. Even when we plant our feet, the ground moves anyway and sometimes the kindest thing we can do is sway with it.

Then I share a few moments from my own life—the milestones that snuck up on me and rearranged everything I thought was stable. The sleep regressions that turned nights sideways.  The crawling that became cruising that became walking. Even illness shifting the household rhythm.

And beneath it all, my own internal weather: the brain fog, the dips in motivation, the longing for rest even on “good” days. These transitions aren’t just our children’s—they ripple into our routines, our mental state, our expectations, our sense of steadiness.

From there, we move into practice—how to embrace change instead of bracing against it. How to soften into a season that feels messy or unpredictable.

Then we weave in wellness… those grounding rituals that help us metabolize change instead of carrying it like weight. I talk about using movement to release tension, carving out pocket moments for solitude, journaling when the mental clutter gets too thick, setting boundaries with love, and vocalizing needs instead of swallowing them. Saturday mornings, Sunday resets, a few minutes to breathe… they all count. They all matter.

We close with an invitation:

“How have you surrendered to a new season in your life or motherhood recently?”

A soft offering to remind you that surrender isn’t giving up—it’s giving yourself space to grow alongside your child, letting the tide carry what no longer fits and welcoming what wants to emerge.
