Double Edge Fitness

Gym Updates: Beyond the Concrete: Building a Stronger Community

Derek and Jacob Wellock

The fitness landscape is shifting at Double-Edged Fitness as we combine our South and Midtown locations into a single, expansive facility. This strategic consolidation creates a space twice the size of our South location, featuring 26 squat racks and approximately 60 pull-up bars – ensuring members have unprecedented access to equipment during workouts.

Construction remains on schedule, with concrete removal complete and new flooring being poured next week. We're targeting September 15th for our grand reopening, bringing together both communities under one roof. While this transition naturally raises questions about class sizes and logistics, we're implementing thoughtful solutions to maintain the quality experience our members expect. Most classes will settle at comfortable levels between 17-20 participants, with our popular 5AM class temporarily limited to current regular attendees until attendance patterns stabilize.

To enhance everyone's experience, we're encouraging advance class sign-ups through the MindBody app and iPad check-ins upon arrival. These simple adjustments allow our coaching staff to prepare equipment setups tailored to exact class sizes and focus more energy on delivering outstanding instruction. Membership rates will remain unchanged through at least 2026, despite widespread inflation affecting nearly every industry. Additionally, we're addressing practical concerns like parking with a complete lot renovation in September, providing 42 dedicated spots plus ample street parking during morning hours.

September is also our designated weigh-in month, with InBody scans available to track progress toward our community goals of 1,000 pounds of fat loss and 300 pounds of muscle gain this year. We welcome your questions and feedback as we navigate this exciting transition – many of our best ideas have come directly from member suggestions. Join us as we build not just a larger facility, but a stronger, more unified fitness community.

Speaker 1:

All right, happy Wednesday everybody. So I am going to give a quick little update on a couple things. Double-edged fitness You'll be able to read this, you'll be able to listen to this and I suggest, I encourage everybody to listen to this update. In regards to construction classes. Regards to construction classes, the transition with Midtown and South, and so forth. So, first thing, construction's on schedule at Midtown getting all the concrete out It'll be out by the time you guys listen to this. It'll be out. Planning on pouring the new concrete Monday next week. That's going to need some time to cure and get the gym put back together. So we're still on schedule, on track for september 15th being back in business over here. So with that, I want to cover some things that has come up with the combining of South and Midtown, a couple things that I've heard mentioned around the room, if you will. So class sizes Well, some of the classes might be a little bit bigger, but it's not going to be overwhelming.

Speaker 1:

The only class that I see hitting that overwhelming kind of territory is the 5 am class and we're making it work itself. I know it's not ideal that space is too small for 35 people. It just is. Now how that's going to work. When we go back to Midtown, once all the racks are built and we move this stuff from south to Midtown, we'll have 26 squat racks and that's like over close to 60 pull-up bars and plenty of barbells, plenty of space. The Midtown gym is twice as long as the south gym, so it's still going to be a full house, going to be a party, but it won't be as overwhelming. And also, we got to remember attendance, like that's not the normal. Those classes you know ebbs and flows, ebbs and flows. If I look at the class average of both 5 am classes at Midtown and South for the year, if I look at the class average of both 5 am classes at Midtown and South for the year, it has a total of about, if I combine them, about 26 people as an average, which is still a big average. Still a big average With that new people.

Speaker 1:

If you're not a regular 5 am person for the last year at either gym, last two years at either gym, if that's not your regular class, regardless if you're a current member or not, I will not be letting other people into that class in the short term. We're going to see where the dust settles, where that class attendance wise, to make sure I'm taking care of the people that that has been their class, that they've had to come to for the last couple years. Okay, I suspect I've already talked to a few people that will be moving different class times and this and that from the 5am class. But I want to see where the attendance settles, see where the space and everything settles, before I open it up to new people. So that class, if you're not already a regular 5am person, that class is off limits. It's off limits right now and I'm sorry about that. But those folks have been working out in that class diligently for a very, very long time and I'm going to protect that space as much as possible for them until we see where the attendance settles out at All right. So in the short term, through the end of the year, in the early next year, that class current double-edged member or new person trying to sign up at the gym and join 5am it's not going to happen.

Speaker 1:

Once I get everything settled in, we'll evaluate attendance attendance, see where we're at, what is the quality of the. You know the vibes like, if you will, and we'll go from there whether or not we'll open up spots for that class. How that works is the class doesn't even show up on the schedule. I have to manually check everybody in and with that, going forward, we going to have to get used to signing up for classes ahead of time. This is for multiple reasons. Knowing how many people are coming the next day to a class helps guide us on how to set up the gym. So, going forward, us coaches will be staging the gym for the workout of the day. We'll have enough equipment, not much will ever need to be shared again and we'll be able to stage the gym for our class sizes each day. But we don't want to play guesswork and we don't want to set up 35 spots if only 19 people are showing up. Okay, it's really going to help us.

Speaker 1:

So 5 am right now, you guys can't sign up for the class. I have it off the schedule. I get that, but all the other classes? If you can start using the mind body app and signing up for classes ahead of time, it helps us plan accordingly so that we can provide a better experience and better structure for everybody. All right, I want to pretend like it's not the end of the world. If you don't, I'm not going to come at you, but this is going to become a thing over the next year where we will need to be signing up for classes.

Speaker 1:

It is super easy. It's super easy to do. I know we have a culture the last 12 years that it's not something that's required. If you don't do it, we're not going to run you out, all right, but it does help guide us on setting up the gym, of building that into your system right now Be very helpful, extremely helpful, right. Second to that, signing in for class when you come in. So, whether you signed up or not, when you come in, go into iPad and signing into class. It's a huge help for the coaches. Right, it's a huge help for the coaches. It allows us to spend more time running the class than checking people in the class. Those two things do help us provide a better experience for you guys, and it doesn't take much time or effort. It's pretty simple. That would be greatly appreciated.

Speaker 1:

When it comes to class sizes, I'm not sure what we're going to cap it at. When it comes to class sizes, I'm not sure what we're going to cap it at. You know, in my brain I don't see many classes getting over 17, 20 people, based on the average attendances of each class at both gyms, and that's a good spot. It's a good spot, so it's not something I'm concerned about any other class. I think the vibes will be good. We'll have two coaches in the mass majority of classes at all times, and I think it's going to be good. I think it's going to be great. It's going to be a healthy, healthy business and gym that we'll be able to put our energy more into you guys instead of that constant trying to grow the gym to sustain. All right. So it's it's a good position to be in and it's a healthy position to be in. But I don't see things getting too crazy and I do think once everybody settles in, you'll see that the classes are a lot of fun and everything will be running smoothly.

Speaker 1:

This isn't our first rodeo. I know quite a few of you have probably forgotten pre-COVID times and what that was like and everything was fine, everything worked out, everything went well. So those of you that are new, since COVID, this isn't our first rodeo running big classes. Since COVID, this isn't our first rodeo running big classes. So we will be providing the highest quality product that we can at the best price point that we can, based on simple principles of supply and demand and what our members are asking for. So, with that and getting to the next point, people ask me if rates are going up or rates are going down.

Speaker 1:

At this time and for the foreseeable next one year, there's no changes to rates up or down. Right, not planning on making any changes there. I feel the gym is at a good price point based on the availability, the supply that we have left to provide for other members and whatnot signing up. I think we're at a good, healthy spot at this point. But if members drive a price increase, it's going to be based on members forcing or suggesting smaller class sizes. You raise rates, you lose some people, classes get smaller, right, so I don't think it's going to be an issue. I don't. I don't. I don't see any need for rate increases. I don't. I don't see any need for rate increases. There's definitely not going to be a rate reduction.

Speaker 1:

I know many of you have felt the effects of inflation I almost said inflammation, but inflation over the last few years. We haven't done a rate increase in a very long time and I still think we're at an okay spot. I do, I do long time and I still think we're at an okay spot. I do, I do we with this change it puts us in an okay spot and to keep rates consistent for the next year. I'm not going to sit here and pretend that we might not look at 2027 and see where things are at then, right, so I would, uh, yeah, mentally, just kind of know that, all right, but not till 2027.

Speaker 1:

Will a decision be made there and what that decision is? I'm not sure. Chances are it's just going to be new member rates going up. Um, and we'll see, because you know it's very meaningful to me, our long-term members, uh, respecting and honoring your commitment to us the best we can, but sometimes some of the costs of things don't keep up with keeping the same rates long-term. But again, 2026, not planning on making any changes at all, not planning on making any changes at all. We're going to see where everything settles out at and see where the needs are at and the stability and keeping everything top-notch, what's required for that. And again, a lot of you guys are the ones that drive these decisions, not necessarily me. If we have the space to put in more people but you guys don't like that then we make decisions based on that and how we control it.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, also another thing when it comes to attendance for the last year, we've done more promotions and giving potential new members free trials, like Like we've done a one-month free trial since. Well, it's been a year now. Since September of last year, we started doing that, which has brought a lot of bodies through the gym. Well, that's coming to a stop. We're not going to be doing that anymore. You know everybody that's going to come to the gym. They might get some sort of little tiny promotion to try it out for a short period of time, but the 30 day trial is going to disappear here in the next couple of weeks. I'm just waiting for the website to be updated, so that's going to disappear and that's also going to cut down on attendance because we won't have people on those trials and us trying to honestly grow the South gym for the last year the way we have been. We don't need to do that anymore. Things are a lot simpler now and we are going to be able to put a lot more energy and focus into all of you, versus constantly trying to get you know new people to believe in our products.

Speaker 1:

You know, with this change, this puts double-edged fitness in a very healthy, stable spot and we're going to see where that settles out at. You know it's. I have no crystal ball. Um, so far everybody's pretty darn excited about everything, although you know people at South, they miss South gym. They have a bond with that place. Just so I could imagine if the roles were reversed and Midtown was moving to South. But at the end of the day, double-edged fitness is one community, uh, one product, and it is going to bring everybody together in a much more meaningful way. That will help inspire us all to just be better for each other. So enough of all that blah, blah, blah. I'm excited about it. I think it's going to be a great thing and I do think everybody, long-term, is going to find it to be a very good decision. I'm very happy about it.

Speaker 1:

Next thing parking lot Parking lot's getting redone next week. About it? Next thing parking lot parking lot's getting redone next week. So that they said they have to wait for restriping for a couple weeks for the asphalt repairs to be done. Um, but either way, by the end of september the parking lot's going to be completely redone.

Speaker 1:

New stripes, uh, that's another concern that's come up is parking. So it sucks for people that like to use our parking because I get to start towing them again, and I will. I did it before. I tow people every you know, sometimes daily. So I've already talked to some surrounding businesses, letting them know, know that that's going to happen. I'm not going to be as lenient as I was for the last five years and we'll be towing people.

Speaker 1:

The spots will be marked and we have 42 spots for parking and in the morning hours there's all kinds of street parking and everything. So it's never been a problem. The one time that we have a little traffic jam is the transition from 5 am to 6 am can be a little traffic jam there, but there's a lot of street parking available and, like I said pre-covid, we had these same class sizes and it all worked out. So afternoons here surrounding businesses like to sneak in and their customers use our parking. I will police it and it'll be taken care of, but I really I don't see there might be a little learning curve for some of the surrounding businesses, but once we get through that I think we'll be all right.

Speaker 1:

Surrounding businesses, but once we get through that I think we'll be all right and, um, one of the biggest offenders to our parking. Well, they just closed up shop and sold the building. So, um, yeah, that simplifies that parking issue because, yeah, they're one of the their customers are some of the biggest offenders of parking in the past. Um, let's see what else. What else? And getting tons of positive feedback on the programming, so that's been super awesome. Excited about that. Um little, ryan perry and her teammate ended up sweeping all the events this last weekend at the world fitness project in arizona, so that's pretty awesome. Want to give her a big shout-out and congratulations on that.

Speaker 1:

This weekend we have a team from the gym supporting the Children's Cancer Foundation. They are competing at Polling for Our Little Heroes. Part of that event is fundraising. So if you find it in your heart and soul and you're looking for a little more tax write-off or something, there'll be a link in the newsletter to contribute and donate to their team, help them out. And I mean all the money. 100% of the proceeds is goes to one of the greatest causes there is in helping families get through cancer with children. So, yeah, it all goes to the Children's Cancer Foundation and they do a phenomenal job. This event's gone on for many, many years and it's run extremely well. And yeah, so we've got a team competing and if you want to support them, find the link in the newsletter. That's where it will be.

Speaker 1:

Other things I'm trying to think. I'm trying to think Shower situations. I know there's been some traffic jams in the showers. I don't know what to do about that. I don't have an answer for that. I do know that the morning classes are pretty darn courteous to the people that need to get to work right away. So as long as we you know, I'll discuss this in class this is really only a 5am problem. The rest of the day it's a non-issue. I mean, maybe 12 o'clock can get a little traffic jammy, but you know we have an A and a B shower. You know a group goes first because they have to get to work right away and B group goes second. Now we're all grownups, we can all work together on this and respect each other and our time. Um, when you know there is a big crowd trying to, you know everybody needs to take a shower, you know. You know everybody needs to take a shower. You know, take a quick one, take a quick shower in and out and whatnot. But again, once everything settles in, I don't think it's going to be as hectic as it's temporarily being received.

Speaker 1:

I also know that some folks are going from very small classes of like less than four to reasonable size classes of 15 to 20, and I understand that it can be a little bit of a culture shock. But the reality is this business and this type of fitness model at our price point doesn't support classes that size. It simply does not pencil for any business gym like ours to do classes at that price point. And that's small group training, which is typically four to $500 per month. Completely different model, all right, so it's not the model, um, that this is, this is built with. And um, yeah, yeah, I really honestly have very little interest in doing small group training. I personally prefer both participating and coaching bigger classes. I think it's the fun and energy that takes place in that is is a huge part of the recipe that drives success. So, um, yeah, it's just to be a thing of the past Classes that have a class of eight or smaller. They're not going to be kept. So we're going to run this place like a healthy business going forward and our current class schedule at Midtown is going to stay in effect through the end of the year and then we'll see about adding more classes. And our current class schedule at Midtown is going to stay in effect through the end of the year and then we'll see about adding more classes or changing some things up. I'll come the first of the year, depending on where everything kind of settles out at, and I think that's it. I think that's it.

Speaker 1:

Some people ask me about Open Gym. Over here we still have it. It's the whole north side of the building, the turf areas, where open gym happens and personal training takes place. So, yeah, you just have to be on a membership that includes open gym. And if you're not sure you have that membership which some people have learned that they don't I'm going to be a stickler about it. Uh, that controls congestion and if you're not paying for it, don't use it. And if you don't know if you're paying for it or not, just ask your coach. It's really easy to see if you have all access or just unlimited classes. So unlimited means unlimited classes. All access means you get open gym and classes. So, yeah, I will be a stickler about that and I will not be letting a lot of people do the all membership, purely to control congestion and to keep that space open for the quality that we want people to be able to experience in that.

Speaker 1:

Um, recovery room. There is spots available for that for double edge members and if you're interested in that, it's um $60 more per per month. I don't know how many spots I'm going to open up for that right now, but there is some if you're interested in that. Again, I could care less if you want the recovery room or not. Um, I'm chief cleaning officer of that room. It is a added benefit for our members who find value in those things and I'm not in any kind of what do you want to say? Business growth mindset to grow the recovery room. I want to be a valuable space for the people that want those services and a quantity of people that I can keep up with the towels and the cleaning of it without losing my own mind. All right, the main focus of this gym and what I do is to get people fit and to provide you the best health and fitness experience possible. So recovery room is a part of that, but, again, I'm not going to be doing promotions.

Speaker 1:

You want it, pay for it. If you don't't don't pay for it. It's that simple. All right same, with open gym, you want it, pay for it. If you don't, then nope, um, it's that simple. So I want to make sure that we are all on the same page there Again, midtown will be pretty much where it was before COVID. That's a healthy spot. It's a healthy spot. It's a spot that I sleep better at night, my brother sleeps better at night, it allows us to keep our coaching staff and it's a good spot. So you know, I appreciate all the support, I appreciate all the positive feedback, I appreciate all the questions and concerns and I hope that you know everybody giving it a little time for things to settle in that you all find it to be a very positive decision that we did this. So I am excited about it for multiple reasons. It's been heavy on my heart the last couple of years to figure out how to bring these communities together and now we're just doing it, you know, kind of forcing the hand to bring the communities together. So super excited about that and having everybody together, our coaches together, classes together, and I think it's just going to create a great vibe.

Speaker 1:

Last thing I want to touch on that I almost forgot is september is weigh-in month, still keeping track of those thousand pounds of fat loss and 300 pounds of muscle gain. So, september, we need to get back on the scale, get your InBody scan and get it done so that we can track that progress and see where we're at, because we're heading into the last quarter of the year and we want to crush these goals this year. So let's our in bodies updated, get that check-in. Uh, when the transition takes place at the end of the month, we'll have two in bodies. I don't know where they're going to be at, but we're gonna have two in bodies and be very easy for you to keep tabs of your body composition. So keep tabs of your body composition. So, huh, yeah, kind of think. That's all I got, so there'll be a summary of this I sent out in the newsletter.

Speaker 1:

And, yeah, again, you guys got any questions, any concerns? Please, please, please, feel free to reach out to myself or my brother, talk to any of the coaches and we'll be happy to discuss those with you. Again, some of the best ideas around here that have happened have been from members bringing up their concerns to me and then we look at ways to solve that. And it's fine. Fine, and if we can't solve that the way that you are thinking, I hopefully will have a answer of why we can't solve that or why it doesn't make sense to change. Um. So, either way, 99 of the time I leave those conversations where we have a better understanding. So please don't hesitate to bring up any concerns to me or my brother directly. You know, bathroom talk typically always gets back to me one way or the other. I have a pretty close relationship with a lot of people in this gym. So, yeah, just feel comfortable bringing it up to me, bring it up to my brother, bring it up to the other coach and we can talk about it and figure it out.

Speaker 1:

And, like I said, some of the best ideas that have come up at this place have been questions or concerns or ideas that have come from our members. So feel free to keep doing that, all right. So I think that's all I got and I love you guys and I'm excited about getting this transition over with the construction done, everything moved and settled in. We're going to try to do it with the least amount of disruption possible. I appreciate everybody's patience on this, but getting the floor over here done will be a huge deal, and then we can start bringing over the equipment, get everything settled in and I truly believe you guys will be coming to a world-class facility that doesn't really exist anywhere else. So very excited, all right, peace.
