Pieces To Wellness
Expectations- A Dangerous Line
A favorite line from 12-step groups is, "Expectations are premeditated resentments." In this episode, Tim and Karen dig deep into the degree to which expectations are also dangerous, especially for those of us with mental health challenges.
To us, expectations are based on beliefs, which start as thoughts. One more reason to notice when you're thinking negatively is so you can stay mindful of it becoming a pattern of thought which over time can grow into expectations that are inaccurate, based in negative thinking, and false beliefs. It's important to regularly examine your beliefs and expectations to see if they are true, yours, and/or helpful.
Many of us know what it's like to expect things to be different than they are, applying expectations to situations where they don't belong, or to place expectations on things that we can't control. Karen calls this "should"ing and suggests that this is also dangerous, and can be a really destructive force in life. In fact, Karen really puts herself on the hot seat, sharing openly about her own experiences developing expectations, living life based on false expectations, and ultimately, learning to let go of expectations.... or at least loosen her grip. (spoiler alert: she's still learning)
Letting go of long-held beliefs and expectations, even the ones that don't serve us, is uncomfortable. That's what we're here for, to speak on uncomfortable topics, and share about our experiences working toward wellness. Our hope is that listening helps you put together your own pieces...to...wellness.
