βWelcome to the Nine to Five Wellness Podcast, a show about corporate wellness solutions with innovators and forward-thinking leaders who are at the forefront of the workplace wellness movement. I'm your host, Aisha Tahir.
βHello friends. How are you guys doing? I had a fabulous Monday. I started my day with. CrossFit workout and then I spent some time with my kids before dropping them off at school. Did my mini lift session, and then I took care of my work. I had to renew my CPR certification. I got that done and I just came back from that. So now I'm sitting in front of the microphone recording, episode number 99 of the nine to five Wellness Podcast. Today I wanna discuss the concept of paying your future self.
I thought of producing this episode because a few weeks ago I saw a patient who was very busy and couldn't find time to prioritize his health, and I said to the patient, pay your future self today. He looked at me so puzzled. So I introduced him to a concept that I've adopted in the last two years. The concept is that we all have a present self and a future self.
We talk a lot about paying your future self. In terms of financial gains or in terms of retirement accounts, like in terms of 4 0 1 Ks and compound interest. But here's my question to you guys. What good is a fat bank account in 30 years. If you don't have the mobility or energy to enjoy it. Today, I want to redefine your future self as another version of who you are today. Just better. I want you to look at your physical health, not as a chore, but as the highest yielding investment in your portfolio for years to come.
Imagine yourself in the future, the ideal person you want to be. Who is it? Is that person 50 pounds lighter? Does that person own their own business and their business is thriving? Is that person an author? Is that person a baker? Is that person in a positive loving relationship? Does that person have a very big circle of friends? Is that person an athlete? What would it feel like? What would you think? What would your day look like? How would you approach work? Who would you surround yourself with?
What I hadn't thought of was the benefit of considering my future self in my everyday routine. I realized that I wasn't considering how my future self will feel about facing the things I was procrastinating, or I just wasn't making time for those things. When I began to think about the ways I could make life easier and sweeter for my future self, things started getting easy and life started running smoothly. What most people, including my past self don't realize is that your future self is you today.
You have to start paying that future self today so that you can become them tomorrow. Most of us live for the moment and do things right in front of us, but making small investments into your future self can go a long way. When I acknowledged my future self, it was so much easier.
To plan for that future version of me, it was the person I wanted to make proud. If your future self has to constantly overcome obstacles that you're leaving for them today, it's time to rethink your actions. Now, I know, I know. If you are a very young listener, this may seem like a lifetime away. Believe me, life waits for no one and your future old self will be inhabiting your life before you know it.
If you want to be healthy into your old age, now is the time to start. Can you make some promises to that future old self and start now to make sure they have the life you want for them?
Is there a dream that you've been harboring that you could start on now so that your future self will have no regrets?
I've been taking small steps to make my future self proud. Really, really small, tiny habits in my everyday routine like. Lying down my workout clothes at night so I can jump right into them. Turning my coffee makers auto brew on turning my coffee makers auto brew on. So coffee's ready in the morning, making my bed first thing in the morning.
So I come home to a made up bed preparing my patient's charts the day before so I don't have to cram those in the morning. Putting a small amount of cash in my coats pockets, oh boy, it has come in handy on so many occasions. Meal prepping on Sundays, guess what? My healthy lunches are always ready to go. Reading 30 minutes every day, so I'm informed and the list can go on and on and on. These are some micro actions that I take every day that benefit my future self, and I've realized that benefits of considering my future self are so important in my everyday routine. Think about it. Every time you choose a 20 minute walk over a scroll on your phone. A nutrient dense meal over a processed convenience meal.
You are making a deposit into your health 401k. Today, the medical landscape has shifted. We have more data than ever with these wearables and tech devices, but the fundamentals remain the same. Think of it this way, your future self is a real person who will inherit the body you are building today.
If you overspend now by neglecting nutrition or movement or sleep, your future self will be stuck paying off that debt through chronic diseases and fatigue. When I wasn't considering how my future of self feels about facing the things I was putting off ignoring, or I was just too lazy to do those, I was always stressed out and frustrated.
I began to think about the ways I could make life easier and better for my future self, and it has had the following positive effects on my life. It gives me the courage to soldier on. I can envision myself being successful and it makes me comfortable with the feeling of success.
It translates into bigger steps towards productivity. It allows me to attract the right people to collaborate with. If you are not sure what your future self really wants from you, I'd like you to sit down and write a letter to your future self.
What do they wish they had done? How do they wish? You had been more conscious of their existence, what ways do they want you to make some plans for them so they will have the life they and you want them to have?
Everything we do is either a gift to your future self or a way of shortchanging your future self. So I have some homework for you this week. Try to sit down and write that letter to your future self because friends.
It is never too soon to start creating the life you want your future self to live.
That's all from me today. Thank you so much for listening. I'll be back tomorrow with another episode. Bye.
