Welcome to the 9 to 5 Wellness Podcast, a show about corporate wellness solutions with innovators and forward-thinking leaders who are at the forefront of the workplace wellness movement. I'm your host, Ayesha Tahir Hello, everyone. How are you guys doing? Happy Sunday. It's a gorgeous weekend over here. I hope it was gorgeous wherever you are as well. And,, I have been enjoying the weather outside. I've been running, working out outdoors, which is always fun. And I want to welcome you back to the 9 to 5 Wellness podcast. , It's been a while since I have, been live solo. So this is like a solo episode, and I've realized that you guys like solo episodes better. So here I am streaming live from New York City today, because tomorrow is the first day of New York City, Tech Week, and I'm super excited to be attending a few of the events here. The first event I'm going to tomorrow is is on the topic of women in AI. And, then there are a couple of other events for, AI and longevity science that I will be attending. So it's a perfect week to be out here because It's so nice outside, and I am excited to be like, getting some runs in Central Park as well. That's always a good perk. Okay. Today, I wanna talk to you about collagen because I've been getting tons of questions about collagen peptides or collagen protein, which it is a protein type of a protein as well. And if you look around, it's everywhere. Everyone wants to take it or is supplementing it in their diets. And, a lot of people are asking me, "What is collagen? Like, what is it really? And more importantly, does the science actually support the hype? Does it contribute towards the recommended daily allowance, of protein?" So today we are gonna answer all of those questions. I'm gonna be taking a deep dive into the role of collagen in our bodies. So let's get started. Its primary role is to provide structure, strength, and elasticity. It's the glue that literally holds you together. We find it holding our skin cells together and anchoring our hair roots, shaping our tendons and ligaments, and even lining our gut. So it's not about only, looking young with collagen, which is often how it's marketed. It's actually doing the heavy lifting internally. Just its role in joint health is so important. Collagen is vital for mobility because it forms the cartilage that cushions your joints. It's also crucial for wound heal- healing. Um, it's also crucial for wound healing and blood clotting. It does so much more than just plump up the skin One of our listeners, Nancy, sent me this question in the DMs the other day, and I want to share it here with you: "I've heard we start losing collagen as we age. Is there any truth to that? And does the supplementation reverse the loss of collagen?" I think it's such a useful question. It's a great question, and I know a lot of you guys have this, question as well, so I want to answer it right here. Like a lot of other things in our bodies, our natural collagen production peaks in our 20s and then gradually declines as we age. On top of that, things like excessive UV sun exposure, smoking, , chronic stress, excessive drinking also breaks down collagen much faster. So if you have that kind of a lifestyle where you're exposing yourself to these, things, you're... Chances are that you're gonna lose collagen faster than someone who doesn't have these things, it, who doesn't have, like, excessive sun exposure, smoking, or, chronic stress in their life. When that structural foundation weakens, so you start seeing fine lines in the skin, your joints will start feeling stiffer, and that's one of the first signs that you're losing collagen. So is the supplementation 100% reversal of collagen loss? To that, I'll say, Nancy, it's a great theory, but it doesn't quite work like that. It's not like a direct delivery service. Let's take a look how it's broken down in our bodies. When you consume collagen supplement, your digestive system doesn't absorb collagen as a whole. Instead, your stomach actually breaks it down into individual amino acids and small chains called peptides. Your body then absorbs these peptides and uses them as building blocks. Interestingly, early research suggests these little peptides don't just act as building blocks. They also act as messengers. They can send signals to your body's own cells, like fibroblasts in your skin, to stimulate your own natural collagen production. And the science is promising. Several clinical reviews have shown that people who take hydrolyzed collagen peptides daily, they do see improvements in skin elasticity, hydration, and a reduction in visible wrinkles. Athletes are also using them to help with connective tissue recovery and potentially lower the risk of joint injuries. So Nancy, I'd like you to take a look at your foundational habits, first and foremost. Definitely look into supplementation too, and we're gonna go a little bit more into supplementation in a bit. protect existing collagen by wearing SPF daily and avoiding drinking and smoking. So that's the first go-to. Eat a whole food diet and exercise regularly. Of course, exercise is the antidote to everything in my world. Second, you know, look at your diet for other supplements too. Maybe you're, deficient in some of the other, , supplements that can help with the production of collagen like, , zinc, copper, and then high-quality amino acids or the complete proteins. Now why do I bring up the complete proteins? Because a lot of people think that just supplementing with collagen is gonna take care of the RDA for protein intake, and, you know, it couldn't be farther from the truth. Research shows us that collagen supplementation can contribute up to 30% of the RDA, but since it's an incomplete protein, it doesn't have, tryptophan, which is one of the amino acids. , it can't, really serve as a complete source of protein. It can't contribute towards the total RDA . Another thing I want you to understand is that if you are supplementing collagen, it's a great thing that you're doing that, but a lot of the formulas out there, like the powders and pills that you'll see in the stores, they don't have vitamin C alongside collagen. And I don't want you to forget vitamin C, because vitamin C is an absolute must-have because it is required for enzymes to synthesize collagen. So if you are supplementing collagen, make sure you're pairing it with vitamin C. You can just eat an orange after you just take the supplement. As long as you are consuming vitamin C in some way or form, you're good there. If you're curious about exploring collagen supplements, remember that the best results come from addressing foundational health, like diet and sun protection and exercise first.
