The underview is an exploration of the shaping of our place viewed through the medium of bikes, land, and people to discover community wholeness.
The underview is a series of discussions within and about the community of Northwest Arkansas. The underview explores our collective understanding and beliefs about the place we live.
These discussions will include topics that are foundational to the identity of our region, the history of our communities, the truth of conflict with the land and its people, and the current challenges and opportunities for our community.

Alli Thurmond Quinlan
Alli Thurmond Quinlan is an architect, landscape architect, and small infill developer. She founded and runs Flintlock Ltd Co (a multi-disciplinary design practice) and Flintlock Development (an urban infill real estate development company) in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She also served on the Fayetteville Planning Commission and the Construction Board of Appeals, as well as being known to occasionally teach urban design with a focus on advanced grading and stormwater in the Landscape Architecture Department of the Fay Jones School of Design at the University of Arkansas.

Bobby Finster is an avid gravel cyclist and proud Cave City native, bringing over a decade of experience in grassroots event production and community building. His innovative approach to rural tourism and recreation earned him the 2023 Ozark Gateway Region President’s Award for Outstanding Service in Tourism, as well as the prestigious 2025 Henry Award as Arkansas's Individual Innovator in Tourism. Recognized by the Ozark Foundation for his unique ability to design immersive gravel routes while fostering strong community connections, Bobby was named Project Lead for the newly acquired Rural Recreational Roads Program.

Brannon Pack is the Senior Director of Operations at the Ozark Foundation, an Arkansas-based nonprofit dedicated to making the outdoors more accessible to all. In this role, Brannon leads the planning and execution of the Foundation’s flagship events and programs, including the Arkansas Graveler, Arkansas Enduro Series, Arkansas Downhill Series, OZ Stage Race, and Arkansas R3. He also oversees strategic operations and production logistics, while managing key partnerships with national and international governing bodies of sport.

Candi Adams has more than 20 years of experience working in design, community development, applied research, higher education, and affordable housing. A lifelong Arkansas native, she has lived and worked in almost every region of the state. Candi finds strength in building quality relationships and bringing people together to achieve common goals. She is a licensed Architect with a passion for community and professional service, has a BARCH from the University of Arkansas, an an MS in Community Development. She spends as much time as possible with her three children, often on the sideline of a soccer field, and her primary objective in live, besides being a good human, is to raise good humans.

Dr. Perla M. Guerrero
Perla M. Guerrero is Associate Professor of American Studies and director of U.S. Latina/o Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her research and teaching interests include relational race and ethnicity with a focus on Latinxs and Asian Americans, space and place, immigration and legality, labor, and U.S. history. She has received multiple awards including a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship and two from the Smithsonian Institution to be a Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Museum of American History (NMAH).
Her first book, Nuevo South: Latina/os, Asians, and Remaking of Place, examines how racial cleansing and sundown towns made northwest Arkansas into a particular kind of place and analyzes the political and economic factors that are shifting social conditions and racial mores.

Dr. Rachel Olzer
Dr. Rachel Olzer (she/they) is an activist, organizer, writer, and speaker based in Bentonville, Arkansas. She is the executive director of All Bikes Welcome, a nonprofit building equity and belonging in cycling and outdoor spaces, and also serves with The Roam Collective and Roam Events. Rachel founded Pedal 2 the People to uplift stories of BIPOC cyclists, and her writing on race, gender, class, and the outdoors has appeared in Bicycling Magazine, BIKE Magazine, Cyclista Zine, Patagonia’s The Cleanest Line, and more. While completing a PhD at the University of Minnesota, she lived in Minneapolis during the murder of George Floyd, where she helped organize the cycling community around justice and equity. Her leadership has been recognized as Bikepacker of the Year (2020), one of Bicycling’s Riders of the Year (2023), and with the Kittie T. Knox Advocacy Award from the League of American Bicyclists (2024).

Melissa Horner
Melissa is a citizen of the Manitoba Métis Federation and a first-generation unenrolled descendant of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. She also has settler lineages including German and French. Melissa grew up in Montana and revels in spending time with her family, practicing archery, traveling, reading, hunting, and hiking with her dog Koy, all of which shape the cultural, relational, and personal experiences that continuously inform her thinking, writing, research, teaching, and creativity.

Michael Spivey
Mike Spivey is the President and CEO of the Ozark Foundation, a nonprofit he founded in 2021 to support outdoor recreation across Northwest Arkansas. The Foundation produces and supports more than 40 annual events, from world-class competitions like the Walmart Cyclo-cross World Championship to community events such as the OZ Kids Bikes & Books Festival.
A licensed attorney with a 30-year career in both the private and public sectors, Mike previously spent 18 years with Walmart, including six as General Counsel for Walmart Africa, overseeing legal and regulatory compliance in 13 countries. Before Walmart, he served as General Counsel for Small Business at the Export-Import Bank of the United States and practiced law in Budapest, Hungary.
An avid endurance athlete, Mike has completed multiple Ironman races, marathons, and global expeditions, including summiting Kilimanjaro and hiking Machu Picchu and the Camino de Santiago.

Paige Dirksen
Paige Dirksen is a practicing visual artist and art educator residing in Bella Vista, Arkansas. She grew up in Iowa and earned a BA in studio art/psychology from the University of Northern Iowa and an MA in art therapy counseling from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Although Paige is not currently practicing clinical art therapy, her background in art and wellness informs a lot of her personal practice as well as facilitation of community arts and art education for all ages. Paige primarily works in relief printmaking as well as painting large-scale murals.

Sam Hoisington is the founder of The Bentonville Bulletin, an email-first local news outlet that launched in April 2024. A Northwest Arkansas native, he has witnessed a lot of change firsthand and now chronicles it for 14,000 newsletter subscribers.
Coverage focuses on local government and growth issues, but has also included education, local businesses, profiles of interesting locals, arts and entertainment, and more.
With the current state of local news, many things in our community go unreported. An analysis of coverage to date found that 69% of The Bentonville Bulletin’s articles covered developments that were not reported by any other local news outlet.
