But your role in shaping your family's financial success is just as important. And the best part, you don't need to sacrifice everything to start winning with money. Let's get started. This is the Money Mom Podcast. Hello and welcome back to the Money Mom Podcast. I'm your host, Rachel Koons, Mom of Four, Money Mentor, and your biggest cheerleader when it comes to creating a life of financial peace and abundance. This episode today may seem a little bit woo-woo at first, but I want you to stay with me because the things that we're going to talk about have real tangible results. And once you start to understand that money isn't just paper, numbers, or transaction, and that it's actually something deeper than that. It's emotion, it's energy. And when we realize that and we change our energy and emotions around it, everything about your financial situation, your financial future can start to shift. So here's what I mean: money is a tool. That's all it is. But it's actually one of the most abundant tools in our world. There is not another item that anyone can relate to, need, and have as many strong emotions that we do than money. And it is a tool that anyone on this earth in the world knows about. You could go to the deepest parts of Africa and they know what money is. And on top of that, it creates one of the most extreme forms of emotion than anything else in our world today. You can find people with the highest highs. Think about the person that wins the lottery or wins a cash prize. Think about the joy and the abundance and the excitement that comes when someone comes into a lot of money. And on the flip side of that, think about the real negative emotions that can come when you are stuck in debt. You lose your job. You don't have enough money to pay off your bills every month. There can be the deepest levels of shame, sadness, guilt, and all of those bad negative emotions. And then we can find all of the emotions in between. Money is a powerful tool. It's just like a hammer. When you think about a hammer, you could think about a hammer being used for good, right? We can use a hammer to build a house or fix a child's toy or build something beautiful. But we also can use a hammer to destroy things. We could hurt people with it. We can wreck buildings. We can wreck things with it. So money is the same way. It's just a tool. It's also a current. It literally flows. Money flows between people, between businesses, and it creates experiences. But just like any form of energy, it carries emotion. And when we treat it with a certain type of emotion, whether that's fear, scarcity, or guilt, that is the energy that we are going to attract more of. So I want you to think about what energy am I holding when I experience money, when I spend money, when I save money, when I do a transaction, what is the energy that's coming from me? Because that's also what's going to be received as well. And when we approach money with gratitude, with confidence, with respect, with abundance, it allows money to flow more freely. If I were to think of money like a river, if the river is flowing, that means water is going to continually move down the river. If I block the river with a dam, or if I put a bunch of sticks in the river, it's going to block that water so it stops in the middle of the river. Money is the same way. It's a flow of water. Like a river, we have to let money come into our lives and leave our lives, believing that it will continue to flow. If we grip it too tightly, it could also slip through your fingers. And if you let it flow naturally, it will nourish everything. And this is why two people can make the exact same amount of money. They could have the exact same income or money in their bank account and have a totally different experience with it. We take one person and we say, you only have$600 in your bank account, and they would freak out. They wouldn't know what to do. You could go to another person and you could say, you have$600 in your bank account, and they would be really excited. So it's not the numbers, it's how we experience the numbers that actually changes everything. If you feel constantly broke, if you feel constantly anxious, if you feel constantly behind, and you look at another person who is in the same financial situation you are, and they feel calm and they're confident and they're capable, even with whatever you're dealing with, it's their energy, the space that they're holding when it comes to their money. And if you're someone who finds that you're self-sabotaging with your finances, meaning that your financial situation shouldn't look like what it does, and you're continually making decisions that are not for your better future, but maybe actually holding you back, it's not necessarily the numbers we need to change. It may be your energy around it. Because here's the thing every financial decision that you make starts here. It starts in your head, it starts in your brain, it starts with a thought. And if that thought is, I'm not good with money, or we never have enough, or there is not going to be enough in the future, then guess what? Your actions, how you act after that thought is going to reinforce the thought that is in your brain, because that's how our brain works. If you're hesitant to look at your bank account, you may tend to spend more impulsively. You're going to continue to stay in the cycle of chaos that you're already in. But when we can recognize the thoughts that we have, whatever they are, and if you have a negative thought, and if you can consciously recognize that negative thought and change it to a more empowering positive thought, then the thought becomes something like, I'm learning to manage money. Or money continues to flow easily to me. Or I have always had enough in my life. You're going to start making calmer, more empowered decisions. Think first, do second. It's not the other way around. You don't need to do anything differently. All you need to do is see the opportunity to shift your thinking to then show up differently around money. I saw this in action between Brad and I and our finances. Two years ago, we were finally, for the first time in our life, making more money than we had had ever made before. The numbers that were coming into our bank account were higher than ever in our whole marriage. And we were feeling the most stressed. We were having arguments about how we spent our money. We were feeling like there wasn't enough money in the bank account. And it led to this chaos around it. And what it took for us to finally realize that it was actually our relationship, the mindset that we had with money that was changing how we act around it and how we showed up, we decided to change how we experience money. And one of the first things that we did was we incorporated gratitude into our everyday practice when it comes to money. We started to notice the small little things where abundance showed up in our life. One of the small, simple acts that we do now is whenever we come across any amount of money, whether it's like a penny on the street or a check that gets sent to us in the mail for some random overexpense or whatever it is, we celebrate it, no matter how big or how small. And we practice gratitude whenever money flows to us. One of my favorite things to do to express that gratitude is when a woman joins the Money Mom Club, I write their name down on a piece of paper and I put it up on my wall. Because there has been a transaction between the two of us. They joined the Money Mom Club, and now I am going to supply them with as much help as I possibly can. But I want to acknowledge that abundance that we are within that transaction. Just that simple act changed so much for us. The money can come and go. Some months we are a little bit tighter with our finances, and some months we have more abundance, but the emotion that we carry amount of money stays the same. And so often I see people on a roller coaster of emotions when it comes to money. They're at the high when they have extra, when they come across more money than they thought they were going to have. And then they ride down the roller coaster and they have a low when there was an unexpected bill came in, or they didn't have enough money to pay off the credit card. And so this emotional roller coaster takes a toll on you. And when you can intentionally say, I'm actually going to get off the roller coaster. I'm not going to ride it. When the highs come, when good things happen with my money, I'm going to acknowledge it and be happy about that. And when the lows come, I'm going to still be happy and still practice gratitude and abundance. And being able to start with myself and my own thoughts doesn't let money dictate how I experience the world. How does your body react to that experience? Does your heart rate increase a little bit? Do you start to feel tense in your shoulders? Maybe you get a pit in your stomach and you feel sick to your stomach, or you just feel dread before you even see the numbers. That's energy. That is energy literally affecting your physical state. And that energy matters. Because if you are carrying stress and shame every time you interact with money, you're going to train your brain to think as money as a danger. What do you think you're going to do when money feels dangerous to you? Do you think you're going to be able to hold on to it? Do you think you're going to be able to want more of it? So what if instead you approached it with curiosity? Oh, I'm just gathering information. The numbers don't define me. They don't tell anything about my worth. They're just data. They're just data from the experiences that I've had in the past. And I actually can control the data. Numbers can be changed. And if I approach it with that mentality, I gave myself so much power. When we remove that emotional charge, you can finally start to make decisions from clarity instead of chaos. So if you're listening to this and you're thinking, okay, Rachel, this sounds great, but I'm currently stressed, I'm currently in debt, and there's nothing energetic about that. I get it. And I've been there before and I know what that feels like. But here's the truth your current situation is not your future situation. It's not permanent. It doesn't mean that wherever you are standing right now, at this day, is going to be where you're standing in six months from now. And happen, in fact, I hope it's not. But the way that you feel about money right now is the frequency that you are broadcasting into the world and into the universe and into your brain. And then your behaviors are going to match that frequency. So start small. Start by shifting one thought at a time. Instead of thinking, we can't afford this, I want you to start thinking, how can I afford this? Instead of thinking the thought, money just always disappears and we never have enough. What if you said to yourself instead, I am learning to manage my money with ease? Tiny shifts like that open the door for much bigger transformation. So here's some practical ways to shift your energy around money. The first thing I want you to do is I want you to practice gratitude every day. And practice gratitude for what you already have, not for what you want to have. Every time you pay a bill, say thank you to yourself. I'm so glad that I was able to pay for that. When you tuck yourself in at night, be grateful for the pillow under your bed. Be grateful for the pillow under your head. When you cook your family dinner at night, be grateful for the food that you're able to set on the table. Gratitude expands what you already have. Number two, track your wins. Congratulate yourself when you make good decisions with money. Every time you save money, you take a good action, you have a good thought. You're teaching your brain to go towards the positive, to see abundance and to see what's there and the potential that you have. And number three, I would simplify. Sometimes the most abundant thing that you can do with your finances is to remove clutter. Declutter your finances, simplify your budget. Because when your energy flows more clearly, you feel lighter and more confident. Listen, the budgeting tools, the savings plans, the grocery strategies, they definitely matter. And I'm not saying that they don't matter, but they are never going to work to the deepest level that they can if your energy around money is stuck in fear and scarcity. You don't have money problems, you probably just have energy problems. And when you fix those energy problems through awareness, through gratitude, through aligned action, the numbers will finally start to work in your favor. So today I want to leave you with this thought. Money is not against you. It's actually just responding to you. When you shift the way that you think, feel, and talk about money, you shift everything that follows. Your job isn't to chase money, it's not to get more of it. It's to become the version of you who naturally attracts money into your life because you trust yourself to use it wisely, to be joyful, and to spend intentionally. And if this episode spoke to you, I'd love to hear about what shifts you're making to change your energy around money. If you want to go deeper, join us inside the Money Mob Club.
