Marketing isn't something you just set and forget. It's an ongoing cycle of testing, learning, and improving. Think about it. When you test, you learn. When you learn, you figure out what works and what doesn't. Then you do more of what works and guess what? You make more money. Simple, right? The truth is, different audiences react to different visuals, messages, or layouts. Testing is how you figure out which version of your creative gets the most clicks, likes, shares, or conversions. And to do it right, you need a structured approach.
Here are my top three favorite ways to test. First, A-B testing, also known as split testing. This method is all about comparing two versions of a creative, like an ad, email, or landing page, to see which one performs better. The key is to only change one thing at a time, whether it's the headline, image, or call to action. For example, if you're running three ads, you could create a B version for each, giving you six ads to test. And a pro tip is definitely set up a simple spreadsheet to track everything.
It'll make things easier in the end. How do you measure success? It's the same across all testing methods, but you're to look at metrics like click-through rates, conversion rates, and engagement to see what's working. Once you have a winner, create a new B version to test against it. Then you repeat the process. It's like a rinse and repeat recipe for better results. The second is audience segmentation. Here you're testing different creatives with specific audience segments, like by location, income, or interest, to see what resonates best within each group.
Combine this with A-B testing to get even more insights. This approach is perfect for tailoring your creative to hit the right note with each audience, and it's super easy to do on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn. Just like before, you're gonna take the winner and test against a new B version. It's all about finding what clicks, literally. And the third is pre-testing with surveys or focus groups. If you want feedback before launching a campaign, survey,
polls and focus groups are your go-to tools. You can test designs, messaging and overall appeal with your target audience. And no, asking your friends or family isn't the best idea unless they're part of your target demographic. Setting up a focus group is easier than you think. Invite five clients for a quick 30 minute Zoom session or host a lunch for your VIPs. Not only do you get valuable insights, but you also show your clients that you value their input.
