Is “cry-it-out” really sleep training… or have we been sold the wrong story about baby sleep?

If you’ve ever hesitated to get support because you don’t want to “just leave your baby to cry,” you’re not alone. There’s a huge stigma around sleep training — and for so many moms, it creates guilt, confusion, and suffering in silence.

Here’s the truth: Cry-it-out is not the only option. And it’s not even what true, supportive sleep coaching looks like.

When we reduce sleep training to “put your baby in the crib and walk away,” we ignore the layers that actually make sleep stick. We skip the foundation. We skip the nuance. We skip the baby in front of us.

And when we skip the foundation?
We end up in the cycle so many families know too well:

It works… until it doesn’t.
Sleep improves… then regresses.
You try again… and feel even more defeated.

Because sleep isn’t a timer. It’s not 5-10-15 minute check-ins. It’s not white-knuckling your way through crying.

Sleep is a puzzle.

Nutrition. Schedule. Sleep pressure. Environment. Development. Temperament. Maternal mental health. Parental perspective. All of it matters.

When we look at the full puzzle and build a solid sleep foundation first, behavioral sleep interventions (BSI) become supportive, aligned, and sustainable.

And that changes everything.

BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING, YOU’LL DISCOVER:

  • Why cry-it-out (extinction) is not the same as true sleep training
  • What Behavioral Sleep Interventions (BSI) actually are — and why foundation matters
  • The critical “puzzle pieces” most parents are missing
  • How alignment and education create long-term, sustainable sleep success

Sleep is complex — but it doesn’t have to feel chaotic.

You don’t have to suffer through exhaustion thinking it’s just a phase. You don’t have to accept guilt as part of motherhood. And you definitely don’t have to choose between support and connection.

When your baby sleeps well, you sleep well. And that’s a powerful place to mother from.
