This is where Building Grit begins.

In this first episode, I hand you the keys to Grit Studios on day one and let you see the messy, exciting reality of building industry entrepreneurship from the inside. We just signed the lease for this space, and you will catch the very first moments: taking down old shelving, lighting candles so it feels like home, and planning out every corner. I show you where the podcast studio is going, where clients will sit, where we will photograph the windows, doors, and product lines that fill this industry, and the private pink room where guests will get ready.

More than a tour, this episode is a real reflection on scaling a small business three years in. I talk about getting fired, starting over, building a team of passionate people, and choosing to plant our flag in the North Georgia mountains instead of a big city. I explain what a category of one business actually means and why I am convinced we can build one. No one has created a media and visibility company built specifically to grow reputation and revenue in the building industry, and that blue ocean is exactly where I want to swim.

I also share my family lumber roots, the granddad and dad who ran lumberyards before me, and why so many strong women in the building industry are part of what we are building. If you have ever dreamed of building something epic that has never been done, watch this and remember the moment with me.

The work can be hard. Let's make it unmistakable.

What you'll take away today:

Entrepreneurship and scaling a small business are hard, but you will see exactly what three years of grit, momentum, and real progress look like behind the scenes.

A category of one business is built by doing what no one else has done, and I will show you why I am betting everything on that bold idea.

[00:00]  Touring Our Brand New Grit Studios in North Georgia

Stefanie Couch   00:00

No, I don't need assistance.

Stefanie Couch   00:08

I'm gonna give you a tour of our new facility here in Clayton, Georgia. We're calling it Grit Studios, and we've rented this location. We're just now getting in. Today's our first official day kind of moving some stuff in, taking some old shelving down, and getting internet set up, so if you hear background noise, that's why.

Stefanie Couch   00:24

But I'm gonna give you a little preview here. We've got bathrooms over here. Nothing too exciting. And then, as any office does, the very first thing you do is buy snacks and drinks and make sure you have candles lit so it feels like home. So we made sure to do that today, and we've already had our first Chick-fil-A lunch in here.

Stefanie Couch   00:42

I mean, we are in Georgia, so Jesus chicken is a must. This is the part that I'm most excited about, because we actually walked in and I noticed that this place has a stage already. It was a live music spot at one time, and we're right beside a music store that the guys still own. That's who we're renting this from.

[01:00]  Building a Full Podcast Studio for the Building Industry

Stefanie Couch   01:00

So we're excited, because we're gonna be able to really turn this into a full studio. Our plan, and this could change, is to have a conference room area here, and then a full podcast studio over here with a set I'll use for my podcast. We'll be able to do that with clients as well.

Stefanie Couch   01:17

And then on this other side, which I'll show you, we're thinking about doing what we call a cyc wall. So we'll be able to shoot photos and videos with a clean white backdrop. We do a lot of business in the construction industry, and a lot of the windows and doors and all these things have a million product lines. We can actually photograph those right here. So we're excited.

[01:40]  Designing the Grit Studio Stage and Set From Scratch

Stefanie Couch   01:40

This is our new Grit Studio stage.

Stefanie Couch   01:43

There I am, got my Wranglers and my pink boots on, pink hat. Action. So this is gonna get closed up right here. We're actually gonna close this into a wall, so we don't need that door. It doesn't really serve any purpose.

Stefanie Couch   01:57

I want a solid wall there. As you can see, it needs paint, but it's pretty wide open. The acoustics are great.

Stefanie Couch   02:10

(singing to herself)

Stefanie Couch   02:20

Here, we're going to build this out a little bit. This guy has gotta go. We're gonna demo this little sound booth thing, and we're going to fill in this wall, so I'm thinking we just frame this up. We obviously need a new front door. A six panel, half light steel door is not gonna do it. We're not gonna get it done with that, but I'm thinking an amazing front door here. Here is the outside, and then here is one of my favorite parts of the whole building.

[02:49]  The Pink Room: A Behind the Scenes Look at My Private Studio

Stefanie Couch   02:49

This is going to be my office. My office to be.

Ben Couch   02:54

This looks like the door from Jurassic Park, in the kitchen with the rafter.

Stefanie Couch   03:01

This is going to be my private studio slash pink room, where guests can come and get ready and where I can work. I'm gonna frame this door up, so this will be a solid wall, and then this wall will be some sort of, hopefully, something that's really aesthetically pleasing. And we'll have a place for me to film some videos up against that wall.

[03:33]  Demo Day and the Real Side of Building Industry Entrepreneurship

Stefanie Couch   03:33

Today, we're gonna break some stuff, and I really like to break things. Heidi, you better watch out. Okay, thanks. No, I don't need assistance.

Stefanie Couch   04:08

This is what three years of entrepreneurship is like.

Stefanie Couch   04:15

Boots are pretty good.

[04:19]  Three Years In: Scaling a Small Business From Day One

Stefanie Couch   04:19

I'm in this space that's going to be our studio for Grit Studios, and I just wanted to make a little video, too. Basically, to remember this moment. It's December 2025. We are three years into the business. We started this in November, first of 2022, officially, and I got fired from my job on November 1st. We had already started an LLC in Florida about two months before that, but now we have a team of seven people.

Stefanie Couch   04:50

I have two or three other people also working for us part-time that I'm really excited about, including someone here in Clayton. And we have a lot of cool stuff happening. I feel like we have momentum. It's still hard as hell every single day. We are making money, but we're spending a lot of money, too, because we have people and we have things we're buying for this building.

Stefanie Couch   05:10

But we're going to make this into a studio. We're gonna have a podcast set. We're gonna have a conference room area where people can come meet. And we're gonna have a photography and video area where we can do product and people photography and video.

[05:24]  The Vision: More Media, YouTube, and Building Industry Visibility

Stefanie Couch   05:24

We're going to have a pink room in the back instead of a green room, and that's gonna be like my personal studio. I'm hoping to get more TV, more product placement type stuff as well, and do a lot more YouTube content for myself and for Grit Blueprint.

Stefanie Couch   05:43

We've so far been working on websites and all these cool things. We've been doing a lot of speaking and media, but we really feel like the media and visibility and what's happening with AI is what we're gonna be doing more of in the future. I love the creative stuff, and I'd also love to have some show houses or projects here that we can use products and placement in. So that's something we want to work on as well.

Stefanie Couch   06:12

I think a lot about how hard business is and how this will not be easy, but I know this is what I'm supposed to be doing, and I'm just pumped about it. Ben's excited about it, too. He's gonna get to do more media stuff. He'll get to find more camera equipment and deal with lights and things like that, which is really what he loves, plus helping with technology and doing strategy. He really enjoys that. It's his love language and his power zone, so I'm excited about that.

[06:32]  Building an Empire in the North Georgia Mountains

Stefanie Couch   06:32

And we're gonna do it right here in Rabun County. I mean, it's in the sticks. It's where I grew up. I didn't grow up in Rabun exactly, but I grew up right around here.

[06:51]  My Family Lumber Legacy and Why This Industry Is Home

Stefanie Couch   06:51

My dad's lumber yard was about 20 minutes down the road, and we sold a lot of lumber and building materials into this area. I just think it's pretty cool. I have customers all around here already, and I love this part of the country.

Stefanie Couch   07:12

So where else would you build your proverbial empire than where you love living and where you want to be? The North Georgia mountains are that for me, for sure, and they are for Ben as well. We've lived in Texas, we've lived in Orlando, and this is where I want to live. So we're gonna build this empire right here.

[07:24]  How I'm Building a Category of One Business

Stefanie Couch   07:24

And we're gonna do something that hasn't been done. I am crazy enough to think that I can build a category of one business. What I mean by that is that no one's done exactly what I'm trying to do. No one has a media and visibility business helping people grow reputation and revenue in the building industry.

Stefanie Couch   07:40

It's a humble industry. People don't like to be seen. They don't like to talk about themselves. It's boring sometimes. I don't think it's boring, because I think it's cool, but it's one of those things where I think we can do something no one's ever done, and I'm gonna do it.

Stefanie Couch   07:54

I think I was born and uniquely built for this exact thing. This is my purpose. My granddad had a lumberyard, my dad had a lumberyard, and I could have had a lumberyard. I could still buy one or build one, and who knows, maybe one day I will. But at the end of the day, I believe my purpose is to be here, to do something that's not been done, to go out and swim in the blue ocean and build something epic. I'm excited about doing that.

[08:20]  Women in the Building Industry and the Blue Ocean Bet

Stefanie Couch   08:20

And I also think it's gonna be cool to do it with a bunch of really cool people, especially a lot of women. We have a ton of women on our team, women who are passionate and smart and know the building industry. So I am just so freaking pumped up about that.

[08:49]  Remembering the Moment Building Grit Began

Stefanie Couch   08:30

And to know that today, in December 2025, I'm here, and this is the start of something. In a year, or two years, or three years, I can't even imagine where we're gonna be. I really can't imagine, because it's gonna be somewhere cool, but I don't know the exact details. It may be in this very building doing amazing, epic stuff, right here in this area.

Stefanie Couch   08:49

So I'm doing this as a little bit of a commemorative, where I can watch it back. I want to remember how I felt this day, and I want to remember the excitement. So I'll see you soon.

Stefanie Couch   09:11

Okay. Shutting it down for the day.
