S5EP05; Sweat, Sleds, and Super Bowl Predictions! HYROX 365?! Finding Community through Movement!
The unmistakable buzz of football season kickoff energizes this episode as we reconnect after a busy few weeks. We dive into NFL opening weekend excitement, Daryl shares his unfiltered Super Bowl predictions—Buffalo Bills facing the Philadelphia Eagles in Santa Clara—though our hearts remain with the 49ers despite early-season injuries to Brock Purdy and George Kittle.
The conversation shifts to personal milestones as we celebrate the arrival of our Death Ride finisher jerseys, those coveted symbols of accomplishment that arrive like Christmas morning for cycling enthusiasts. There's something profoundly satisfying about earning these specialized jerseys that represent tremendous physical effort and mental fortitude. The pride in our voices is palpable as we discuss pulling them on for the first time and planning our "finisher jersey rides" together.
The heart of our discussion explores HYROX, an innovative fitness competition gaining worldwide momentum since its 2017 German origins. Unlike technically complex CrossFit movements that can lead to injuries, HYROX focuses on eight natural, functional exercises—ski erg, sled push/pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmer's carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls—interspersed with one-kilometer runs. What makes this format particularly compelling is its accessibility; whether you're 16 or 60, competing individually or in teams, HYROX welcomes participants of all fitness backgrounds while still delivering an intense challenge.
We close with stories of community-building through fitness—from family members joining 10-mile running events to planning podcast interviews with cycling veterans. These shared experiences remind us why movement matters beyond physical benefits; it's the connections formed while pursuing challenges together that truly enrich our lives. Whether you're a weekend warrior, competitive athlete, or fitness newcomer, this episode highlights how finding your tribe makes every mile more meaningful.
Text us your Super Bowl predictions and cycling questions for our upcoming interview with a 20-year Death Ride veteran! We're eager to hear from our community as we continue exploring purposeful movement and meaningful connection.
Hey, hey, hey. Welcome to the Peach Podcast. Just a couple of dudes and an occasional guest breaking open topics from everyday life on purpose, energy, attitude, commitment and health. So, if you're ready, listen in as we live, to learn from our losses, gain from our gratitude and laugh as we level up. Always remember, if you ever feel stuck, all you got to do is just start. Come on, let's go.
Speaker 2:Hey, welcome back to Peach Podcast. It's great to be back, man. I don't know if we recorded last week. Man, I'm so lost in time right now, darrell, I don't know where we are, where we're going or what we're doing. So this week we're going to keep it simple, man. We're just going to reconnect reconnect with each other, reconnect with the audience. Darrell, I know you've been super busy at work. Also, you're training for your running and you've got to get some cycling in as well, and you're joining other groups. You, you got it going on, brother, but so let's take a moment for us to catch up. And I say, why not catch up with the topic? First and foremost, football man, because it's football season. Daryl, come on niners, are you ready for?
Speaker 3:some football and I tell you, doug, don't you feel, feel like the NFL feels like 365 days a year. You hear about it, it's just there. But, man, when that first game kicks off, everybody's got hope.
Speaker 1:Until they lose.
Speaker 3:Until they lose. Until they lose yeah, some big things after a pretty tough season of injuries and everything else with the Niners. You know we're flying under the radar screen. It's kind of nice, kind of quiet. We got, I think, a last-place schedule and everything else and, man, we got some injuries. But it was nice to see NFL kickoff. The Eagles, of course, the defending champions, Super Bowl champs last year still look good. Green Bay got the Dallas. Jerry Jones gave them the number one pass rusher.
Speaker 2:Yes, man, they looked great. Did you watch them last night?
Speaker 3:I listened to it in the car. Oh my gosh, they were on fire.
Speaker 2:Daryl, I'm a little worried. I'm excited actually when they show up or when we show up. It's going to be a great game, because that's what we want to see is some good football.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, but it's exciting, it's a big part of our culture, a big part of our society. There I still have my one fantasy football league. I'm still in one.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's through the boxing club.
Speaker 3:The boxing thing, jose.
Speaker 2:Morales boxing Academy.
Speaker 3:Yeah, Jose Jose's Morales boxing, and you know the techs start about Thursday and they end about Monday, and there's. I think it's just a way to, like you know, talk crap to each other and have fun and everything else and avoid getting avoid getting beat up. Avoid getting beat up. But um's good, it's good. Niners won their first game yes, niners wasn't super pretty and we got brock.
Speaker 2:Pretty hurt already and kittle hurt yes, and they're both going to be. I think brock is going to be out for a couple weeks maybe a few weeks and, uh, kittle is definitely out for a few weeks.
Speaker 2:um, but you know, I I, because it's so early. At first I was kind of bummed and I think, brock, one of the reasons Brock is out is turf toe and his shoulder. But turf toes the biggest thing. And I'm like, come on, man, back in the day, when they had leather helmets, you didn't hear about turf toe. People just got to the game game and they played football. Man. I'm like, come on, brock, but I'm gonna get, I'm gonna cut him some slack, but it's. I think it'll be cool for us to see what's the second string guy's name Mac Jones, mac Jones, yeah, so I'm like, let's, this is his time to shine, man. That's how Brock came in.
Speaker 3:Right.
Speaker 2:Somebody got hurt and all of a sudden Brock became the starters Like oh shit.
Speaker 3:Brock, you better hope Mac ain't too shiny, I know, I know, but anyway it's exciting. I know, um. You know we still have, um, you know, our season tickets between um, your dad and myself and you and everything else. We'll definitely pop down to a few games um this year. We'll have to plan it out, but um, but yeah, football has started, so um, still, um, you know this weekend is starting to cool down, so we're still a little bit in the heat, but falls here and football is here yeah.
Speaker 2:so, daryl, uh, if, darryl, you would know that he is a massive statistics dudes and he's a massive sport. You can ask him about almost any sports and he knows the names, positions and and all that stuff. So, darryl, with that, with that said, if you had to pick who's going to the super bowl in Santa Clara, by the way, this year and I and I know our hearts wanted to be the San Francisco 49ers but I want the real down-to-earth, humble Daryl to say, based on week one, who do you see in the Super Bowl?
Speaker 3:I hate to say this, but I would have to say that the Buffalo Bills on the AFC side, oh yeah, absolutely. I don't think the Chiefs are going to get back there four years in a row and I don't want this to be true, but I think the Eagles are going to be back. Yeah, I think the Eagles are going to be back. They didn't lose too many players. They got a real good core.
Speaker 3:So I'm going to go Bills and Eagles, but I'm still counting on the niners to knock them off, but yeah, but if I'm gonna be real honest with ourselves and um, and plus, I can't uh, by the way, my father-in-law, your dad, um, if the niners go to the super bowl and it's in santa clare, he wants to get like a two hundred thousand000 suite. And we were like um chief, how are we doing that? Let's, let's, let's, dial it down. Right, let's dial it down a little bit. I'm like no, daryl.
Speaker 2:So let me just clarify he wants you to get a $200,000 suite. Let's keep it 100%, daryl.
Speaker 3:We might have to have a, you know, charity auction. He's oh, we can, we can get people and they'll all pay and we'll make money. And I'm like no, no.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll have to bring my auctioneer skills in. We'll have to auction off the house, the cars, and we're going to celebrate 125 now to 200 to 250 to 275. And I got three, but we'll get there somehow, wouldn't that be man? That's like.
Speaker 3:That's like when they played the super bowl in stanford, you know in your hometown, in your backyard man, that would be a dream come true to have the niners play the super bowl. So, on statistics, like you said, there's only been one team, because you know the super bowl is hosted in different places, each location, right, you know each year different places. There's something they go back to a lot. Only one team has hosted it at their home stadium and they won. Do you know who it is?
Speaker 3:the san francisco 49ers no, it wasn't officially theirs, it was stanford that's true. Well, okay, well, it's close um the uh buccaneers. When tom brady won was the first time, and it was almost like 55 years that it never happened. So that's wouldn't that be awesome if it was uh, if it was the second one?
Speaker 2:So we were the second one, that would be so awesome. And you know what statistic or no statistic man, it would just be awesome if the Niners can get us there. And you know the veterans. You know like uh, um, you know like Kittle, you know he's like he's like man we got.
Speaker 2:He, you know, in his heart he's like people. We're going to do what it takes to make this happen, because if I'm going to get a Super Bowl, it's going to be here. And you know, hey, christian McCaffrey looked pretty man. They worked him like a workhorse last week. I was like, oh, I guess I was thinking, man, they're going to see if he's going to break break or not. Man, we're going to find out right now, because they worked him hard last week and he handled it.
Speaker 3:Yeah, josephine and I were watching the second half and it was handoff to McCaffrey Purdy dropped back, throw it to. Couldn't believe so. And even when they interviewed the quarterback at the end of the game and she said you know a lot of the fans left.
Speaker 2:He goes well, you know that tells you, man, don't leave until it's over. You never know, you can't give up. And you know a lot of their fans left and they ended up coming back they were 15 points down with like six minutes or something like that and come back to win the fricking game by one point man. Come on, daryl. So there was a lot of exciting football going on last week and I look so forward to, you know, monday nights, thursday nights and Sunday. You know it's, it's back and I'm going to enjoy it while it's here.
Speaker 3:It is, it is, and we're wanting to know. So you know we'll, we'll 1-0. So you know what We'll go from there.
Speaker 2:Amen, amen, hey. So what's going on with Team Peach? One of the Team Peach players you know Dave's doing good he's. You know he's been camping a lot and he's been running a lot. He's cycling. I see him on Strava. You know he's, dave, staying busy man, like he's staying fit. You know I, I you know who I haven't seen a lot is Eric. I'll see him when you guys go out for a run together. But you know I used to see Eric pop up on there on the regular but I know he's been real busy. He's getting ready for a big trip we're doing to Maui in December me, you and him and so I know he's pulling a lot of side work and getting stuff done. So we love you, e. I know you're listening, man, we love you, but I noticed Strava's looking a little dry without the E train on there. Come on, come on, and you know what?
Speaker 3:I know we're in September, but do you know what? One of my favorite weeks of the year the last three years is?
Speaker 2:What's that?
Speaker 3:The very last week in August or the first couple days in september. Do you know why that is? Why is that?
Speaker 2:that's when death ride ships out our finisher jersey. Yes, the death ride finisher jersey they, uh, they, uh.
Speaker 3:One of the things we've talked about in our items is, if you finish the whole death ride, you have to prove to them you do with the stamps, and then they give the opportunity to get a jersey and you can always buy jerseys, but there is a special one that you get and it's the finisher jersey and you order it within. Like they only give you like four or five days to order it, right, right, they put in a special batch and then they ship it out to you and it came here and, um, you get an email from. Your finisher jersey is on its way and you know we're all texting back and forth, running to the mailbox like we're little kids opening and everything else. Yeah, this year seeing jr get his finisher jersey and put it on and the smile and we're gonna put it up, that smile on his face yeah goodness I was the best.
Speaker 3:That is awesome. It well, yeah, goodness, I was the best. That is awesome. I mean, it was uh, it was great.
Speaker 2:It is good we got to. We we need to get a ride together. Um, the finisher Jersey ride, yeah and uh, you know, just I I went, I, I speaking of finisher Jersey, I I haven't been on my bike. I think, gosh, gosh, since Death Ride has it been that long? Damn, it's been too long. But anyways, my finisher jersey came in last week also and I haven't been on the bike. I said you know what? I got to go break this jersey. And so I went for a small little 21-mile ride today with some elevation and had my jersey on. Very comfortable man, I like that particular style and cut. It's the pro cut it's a little more pricey, but the way it fits and it's almost like you're naked man, it just feels really nice on your body.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we'll definitely put up the JR's item. Hey, also about you. You were up hanging out with your brother, joe, in his gym for a little bit. How's he doing?
Speaker 2:Yeah. So that particular weekend, the last weekend of August which, by the way, he's going to move because it's a holiday weekend and a lot of his members, you know, they go away for the weekend so despite that, he had a massively successful event. It was well attended, had a food truck, athletes were there, support people were there, members were there, because it's not just a three lift, heavy lift competition, you know, with the squat and deadlift and bench press, it's, you know, it's also member appreciation day on that day. So a lot of members were there and it was such a great time. The energy was awesome, the competition was great. To see these athletes and all age, all age ranges, to see older, older people in there competing with some young bucks up there just smashing some way, it is just crazy.
Speaker 2:This year was special for me because my son, max, was asked to come on down and be a spotter and you know me, I'm the MC guy so just to see him on the side over there and watching him get pumped up, going you know, dang, I should get in this damn competition.
Speaker 2:So that was a great time and then ended up spending the weekend with Max and we got a hotel down there in Santa Rosa and spent the weekend down there, went to Russian River, went to this amazing golf course and just hung out and had a couple beers and watched people tee off and stuff. It was really crowded, but it's just a beautiful scene. Have you ever seen that nine hole down there? It's in, not Mendocino, what's that town called Montecito or something I forget, but it's Russian River. It's a very famous, famous golf course and it's just nine holes, but it's in the beautiful Redwoods and it's Russian Russian river. It's a very famous, famous golf course and it's just nine holes, but it's in the beautiful, like Redwoods and it's fricking gorgeous. Yeah, yeah, we had time to spend with the grandkids and Max and Yvonne, so that that was awesome. Um, yeah, so that that was a good time, definitely good time.
Speaker 3:You, um, you mentioned to me and I think we're going to chat about it right now about um to me and I think we're gonna chat about it right now about um, hyrox, um and uh, that joe's got, you know, is interested in that. So, um, I've seen that on tv and seen, actually, you know, probably see it every once in a while, like social media posts and everything else. It seems like this new indoor kind of phase for fitness. But, um, I think you've looked into it. So what, uh, what's going on with that? It seems like a fate. It seems definitely seem. I see a lot more of it, but I don't've looked into it. So what's going on with that? It seems like a phase, it seems definitely I see a lot more of it, but I don't know much about it. So what is it actually? This High Rocks thing I know that you and Joe were talking about it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure you know what I'm gonna tell you about High Rocks and kind of give you the navigate on how it works and what's involved and all that stuff. But before I do, I was at mass this morning listening to your daughter do a reading and she did awesome, man. She did so awesome. I'm so proud of her. But I was sitting behind this guy and Josephine pointed over to me. She goes hey, that guy right there, his name is Austin and we're doing a 10 mile run with him on Sunday. And I said Daryl too, because I think Daryl's out of town. She goes yeah, no, no, no, he's coming back. And I said okay, so tell me about that. What, daryl? What are you doing at St Mel's Catholic school, there with the parents? What's happening? Man? You guys, are you got you got a run club? Like what's going on?
Speaker 3:Yeah, you know, you know, you know we, I love the St Mel's. It's such a great church and also it's an amazing school that Ava goes to. When you go there, and you know a lot about this, the parents are awesome, right, I get to know all the parents. Josephine's. Josephine is very, very active in the school and I tell her sometimes I'm not known as Daryl, I'm known as Josephine's husband, right?
Speaker 3:So this guy comes up to me at a function and says hey, daryl, I'm Austin. I hear you are a runner. I said not a great runner, but I have been running. He said, hey, we got a little group together, a text group, and the name of the group is Run Like the Winded. So he goes I'm going to sign you up for this.
Speaker 3:He put me on this text thing and he said the end of September we're going to do a run. It's a 10 mile run called Stampede. And he says you know, we're just not a big deal, just kind of encouraging people to go do it, and I think there's six or eight people and we text back and forth and it's great encouragement across the board. So it's funny because I had this, this text thread over to the side and then, um, josephine joined it and the only thing I can describe that for any of you listeners that remember um Seinfeld, worlds collide. It was like all of a sudden, josephine is in the running club text messages and she's texting and everything else. So we're doing it this weekend. I think there's eight or nine of us Alyssa's doing it, it's on Sunday and Josephine has run 10 miles in training several times and this will be our longest race, so I think it's a perfect opportunity for her to do it, and then she's about two or three weeks out from her half marathon, so it'll be really fun.
Speaker 2:That's so awesome, man. Look, you know, daryl, check it out you, josephine and Alyssa, are going to run 10 miles together on Sunday. That, I mean, man, and that didn't happen overnight. You know that did not happen overnight, but it happened with consistency and persistence and patience and uh, and without an agenda. You know it. Just that that that kind of energy attracts and and it's funny because you got to go through in the very beginning, when a when a spouse or or one of your kids or somebody's going making changes like that, a lot of times you might be faced with, you know, like why are you doing that? Or you know can't. You know you should settle down and rest a little more. You're doing too much. You get a lot of this, you know kickback, and then you just keep moving through it and next thing, you know, you know if you can't beat them, join them, and so you know it's so. I'm so happy for just your family, because I know doing stuff like that together has got to just feel amazing.
Speaker 3:Hey, I got to tell you one little story. Josephine went out in Alyssa for a 10-mile run. It was going to be their longest run and they completed it. And Josephine's got all these little loops and she was at like 9.5. Seven, five, something like that. And she was going there and Alyssa was like I'm done, and Josephine's like no, you're not Right. And Alyssa's I'm done. And when Alyssa says she's done, she's done, she got. So she did like 9.89 or something she goes.
Speaker 3:I'll do my 10 miles in a couple of weeks, right? So Alyssa, officially, we'll get her official 10-miler in on Sunday, but it's going to be fun, tony. Tony Kha is going to do it.
Speaker 2:Oh, tony Kha, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, he's going to do it. He's the track coach over there, right?
Speaker 3:Yeah, he's doing really good. He's the cross-country and track coach at St Mel's, so he's doing it. Several spouses, different people, are doing it. Ava's going to come down and watch us with Tony's wife, regina and Mikey. So yeah, great, great fun. You know family orientated way and you know, you know that man, there's nothing better than being out in community doing a nice run like that, how you feel afterward, and I'm very excited about it.
Speaker 2:That's awesome. That not only is that awesome, but it's a great segue for getting back to High Rocks. Yeah, because High Rocks, daryl, was founded I believe it was founded in the UK by these people who were into fitness and athleticism and all that stuff and they were looking for something to do and one of their primary focuses was to build community, was to build community, and I think I believe they were uh, they may have been from the CrossFit community and again, and anything I say today is not a, uh, you know, a bash towards CrossFit or anything like that, but there have been some uh, some struggles with, uh, with CrossFit not for everyone. Daryl, when you and I and Eric went to the CrossFit, we went to the CrossFit games over there at Granite Bay. You remember that.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and I'll tell you, man, I'm a pretty fit and active person, but when I was over, when I walked in there, I was a little intimidated man. I'm like you know, cause I saw the, the, the age and weight category, I would be competing and I'm like these guys are freaking beasts, you know. I mean, they're monsters and that's all. And I applaud them.
Speaker 3:And Doug men and women that were crushing it.
Speaker 2:Yes, and they were jacked. Man, it was like holy smoke, like women would walk by and I'd be like let's move out the way. Man, I am not, you know, it's like give them room, man, give them room, and man, I applaud those men and women who train at that level and who can handle that. But some of the some of the downfall or set setbacks with CrossFit is it seemed to be injury prone. You know, a lot of athletes were getting injured shoulders, ankles, knees, hips, a lot of things, because there's a lot of complex movements, hips, a lot of things, because there's a lot of complex movements, which makes, if you win a CrossFit Games, it makes you a pretty damn badass because you had to learn all the complex movements with weights and do it in a certain time. And so when I see CrossFit Games on TV or when we saw them in person, I have deep admiration and respect for the people who can compete at that level in those modalities, because it's no man, it ain't no joke. But anyways, getting back to Hyrox, it's Hyrox H-Y-R-O-X 365. That's the official name of what I'm going to talk about. And Hyrox was brought together to bring in only natural human movements. So they brought, they hired this physical therapist, trainer kind of person who had tons of knowledge about how the body moves and you know what it can do, what it's supposed to do. And so they looked into hundreds of different exercise movements and they came up with eight movements that are natural body movements, that aren't complex, they're very simple, and then they put them together in a game. And so the way a High Rocks 365 competition works first of all, you can compete as an individual, you can compete in doubles, where there's two people, and those two people could be two men, two women, a man and a woman, it doesn't matter. And the only age requirement is that you are at least 16 years old. That's the minimum age you can be. And then they also have a relay category where you can get four people on a team and each person would take each person would take on two different uh movements, two different movements, and then you got to run a lap.
Speaker 2:So here's how high rocks 365 works. First of all, it's indoors and it's like it's in a, an arena type setting, and in the middle of that arena is called the uh I forget what it's called the rock or the cage or something in the center, and in the center you'll have eight stations. You have what's called the uh, I forget what it's called the rock or the cage or something in the center, and in the center you'll have eight stations. You have what's called the, the ski erg. You've.
Speaker 2:You know what a ski erg is? Right, where you grab the handles into that ski pole motion and then, after the skier, you do a sled push and then, after the sled push, you do a sled pool, and then, after the sled pool, you do a burpee broad jump, for I think it's 80 meters. And then, after the burpee broad jump, you're going to do rowing, and after rowing, you're going to do a farmer's carry with some kettlebells, and after the farmer's carry, you're going to do a sandbag lunges. And after the sandbag lunges, the last movement you're going to do is wall balls, and wall balls is where you have a medicine ball and you squat down and then you rust your whole body up and push the ball up and you got to hit a certain target, and I forget there's certain amount of times you have to do it and and then you're done.
Speaker 2:So all those movements I mentioned before you've entered the ring in the cage, you got to run a meter. It's a, it's a one meter track around the cage. Then you enter in, you do the skier I think it's a thousand meters and then you can only be released when a judge. You have to raise your hand and a judge says, okay, you're done, go then, or the judge, or the referee, whatever it is Then you have to run another meter around before you can do the next exercise. You mean kilometer, one kilometer, one kilometer?
Speaker 3:yes, yeah yeah, One kilometer. So one kilometer just for everybody here. One kilometer is a thousand meters, Thousand meters. Which one kilometer is? What is that? That's about two thirds of a mile. It's about six, Right, right, right.
Speaker 2:So at the end of the competition you will have run eight kilometers. How many miles is that, daryl?
Speaker 2:Almost five almost five, okay, yeah, so you'll have run almost five miles with doing these exercises in between. Each kilometer, wow, wow, yeah. And so what's fun about it? And what? And again, when the founders of this put it together, like I said, one of the biggest things they wanted to focus on was building community and camaraderie, you know, and, and not create a space where it was going to limit. They even have people with, you know, missing a leg or missing an arm, and so they really have gone above and beyond to make sure everyone can compete, everyone as long as you're 16 or older, um, and that's probably just for legal reasons or whatnot, but but uh, it's, it's really cool, it's fun.
Speaker 2:You know my brother, joe, at a world's gym in Healdsburg. He's got in his gym, he has a skier, he has a sled that you can push, you can pull, he has, um, you burpee, broad jump, you don't need anything. You can do that in a parking lot, but he has the turf in his gym. He has called, he calls what he calls the athletic room, um, and he has rowing machines and farmers carry that's just a couple of kettle bells and then the running you can do, anybody can do, and so he has become an affiliate. His world gym in Healdsburg has become an affiliate for high rocks three 65.
Speaker 2:So if I was a high rocks competitor and I was traveling or I lived there and I wanted to find a place that you know supported my training, I need those, those pieces of equipment.
Speaker 2:Um, world gym and Hills would pop up and I'm like, oh, okay, great, I know where I can go now and go get some training. So he's also, he's also going to have some uh, people get certified so that he can offer not just the equipment, but if you want a trainer to train you, because if you don't do a movement correctly you can lose points, you can get penalized with points during the competition or you can eventually become disqualified if you keep repeating the mistakes. So it's kind of technical as far as doing the right movement, waiting to be released when you're supposed to don't get ahead of the game, and so having somebody train you and walk you through all these movements and modalities would be a huge plus if it's something you want to do and take it not super serious, but you know, you know serious enough to say, ok, if I'm going to do it, I want to do it right, I want to do it well.
Speaker 3:Well, like I said, I've seen it on TV a lot. And when to do it? Well, well, like I said, I've seen it on uh on tv, um, a lot. And when I see the people, I definitely have seen the people running. I see them doing and then I've seen them run. I didn't exactly know what it was right like, but man, I'll tell you what man it looked like. A huge vo2 max cardio workout, right? Yeah, that's what I remember. Just like holy crap. Especially, they're doing the skiers really fast and, and it's interesting, eric and I have incorporated wall balls into our workouts.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 3:Man, it gets your heart rate up quick, right, it's surprising. You know what I mean? It's definitely upper body, lower body, the whole thing, but Eric and I always always surprised how much it does. So, um, hey, we're going to have to, so we'll, I'll, I'll take this challenge on. We'll look in Sacramento, maybe we'll pop up there. We should try it out. We should definitely try it out. You know, I'd love to, because I've seen it and it sounds pretty interesting. I just did look online and it did start in Germany only a few years ago. 2017 was the beginning of it. Ok, and the other thing I think you mentioned and it said on the thing I looked at, is a lot of this is indoors, right.
Speaker 2:Yes, it's all. So everything I've researched and looked at because I'm going through the just for the sake I'm going to help World Gym Hillsborough launch either in October or November, and Joe asked if I can just get kind of brushed up on what it's all about, some of the rules and stuff, and so I'm actually going through a certification program so that I could, if I wanted to train people, I can train people. I'm doing all this stuff just because I want to be good at the launch and, you know, bring my MC skills up to where they need to be and uh, and do a great kickoff for him.
Speaker 3:Let me ask I've done all of those movements. I've never done the skier machine, have you? No, I've never done the skier machine, have you?
Speaker 2:no, I've never done the skier. I haven't either. Yeah but, I hear that one is like vo2 max to the.
Speaker 3:That's like the rower, but you're standing there the rower, yeah, yeah, and um, the, the one. I've seen people do that before. That's the, except some of the movement, those people that do the? Um, what's it called? Uh, the cross-country skiing, cross-country skiing, correct? Yeah, yeah, and they're just doing that the whole time. You know, the rowers, all that is people that do the what's it called?
Speaker 2:The cross country skiing Cross country skiing correct.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and they're just doing that the whole time. You know the rowers and all that. So very similar, but definitely that would be good. I didn't know. Joe had that at his gym, so that's really cool. He's always had, he's dabbled into CrossFit and a few other things he's always had, like this turf and sleds and stuff, so it seems like a perfect fit for his gym.
Speaker 2:Yeah, no, no, he's, he's definitely all set up for it and and he does other things with the turf and all that stuff and you know, not really CrossFit stuff, because he's not a CrossFit gym, but he has all the equipment. If you were a CrossFit person, you could train there as well Um, but he's really excited about I don't know if it's because, you know, Joe, he's, he's seven years older than me, so he's getting older, so he's looking for stuff you can do. And uh, not get hurt, I'm just messing around with you, Joe, I know you're listening, but uh, well, let's both.
Speaker 3:It sounds like you're way deep into it. That's awesome, helping out Joe and everything else and researching and maybe being certified. I'll definitely look at some stuff in Sacramento. I'd love to try it out. Sounds like those are all just amazing workouts and I like the incorporating running into it is really cool. That's really good. And no, not CrossFit. But man, I'll tell you what. It definitely seems like this has got a lot of big momentum and, like you said, definitely probably you know they. They talk functional movements. Yeah, there you go.
Speaker 2:Functional movements. Yeah, yeah, functional movements. Okay. So, uh, moving forward. Daryl in in a week or two. I'm excited, man, we're going to bring back John Erickson from death ride. He's the course coordinator, uh, for death ride and has been for many years, and he has a good friend, rod. I can't, man, I can't remember Rod's name, rod Halbert. Rod Halbert, I forget if he says, was a pro rider, but has definitely ridden with pro riders at the very least. He also has a spin studio like a high end, not just come in for shits and giggles. It's like he's going to train you and get you in shape. Spin studio using a power, power meters and stuff on the bikes uh called Phoenix cycle systems up in Rockland. But Rod will this year at death ride. This will be his 20th year doing death ride and it's like so we're going to, we're going to get those two guys on and John I asked John to be on as well because I got to ask, like, what the hell's going on in your brain to do death ride for 20 years, man.
Speaker 3:That's impressive. That's impressive. You know what, and I definitely I know you and I've chatted about this. Um, we're going to organize. I got you've got a lot of questions. I've, like somebody I know cyclists, but like someone like that that's been more deep into it and, uh, you know, done more at the, you know, high end, amateur or pro level a lot of cool questions I'd like to ask him.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, yeah. And for our listeners, if you're a cyclist and you're a listener, please text us. There's a little text link in the show notes If you have a cycling question, especially regarding power meters and stuff. It sounds like this guy, rod, is very astute on this and uses it to train not just your weekend warriors, but also trains pro riders on how to elevate their game and get what they need. Also, the other thing I would love to see in the text send us a text. What? Who are your picks for the Superbowl this year? Let's go back to the beginning. Who are your picks for the Superbowl? So text us who you think is going to win, and then, if you have any cycling questions, we're going to have somebody on with us Crap ton of knowledge man. So send over your cycling questions and we will ask Rod, while we have him on, as well as what makes him tick to go back to do death ride for 20 years. But, daryl, that's, that's about all I have, brother, you got anything all right.
Speaker 3:So I, I gotta doug, I, I gotta put it out there. I'm putting you on the spot uh-oh, here we go death ride 2026. Are we in?
Speaker 2:I think I was on mute.
Speaker 1:I think I was on mute If.
Speaker 3:John hears this, he's going to blow up our text message there.
Speaker 2:John is so awesome. He keeps offering, inviting and creating so many ways to do that. I can't say no. But you know, daryl, I was thinking when I was out writing today. Can't say no, but you know, daryl, I was thinking when I was out riding today. I may see if I could work alongside John in in the in just coordinating the event. Um, because I want to start learning about some of that stuff that they do. Um, I don't know if Paul shared with you, but you know I'm looking into, uh, an event up by where you're at right now. That's where you're at and, um, you know, and John is.
Speaker 2:John is helping me big time man, Like he's all in helping. He's just he's such a cool cat. So, uh, so we'll see. Uh, I would like to do death ride one more time, especially if we're going to bring on a couple more people. We got to get DV, you know, the fixer, uh, a current. He's got a finisher jersey from the past, but that was way, you know, I think it's outdated now. We got to get him a new finisher jersey and uh, you know, and do whatever it takes. So I'm, I'm in if, if, all if, if everything is lined up.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I think I'm, I'm, I'm definitely in. I think I'm in for more than just a. Hey, I want to go. Do you know? 103 miles 14. It's just such a cool event getting to know John a little bit, the community up there, the people we know. I just I can't see how we would not be affiliated with Death Ride next year to some degree.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. And. But the other thought I had is, you know, I might even ask John about setting up a little spot for podcasting and interviewing some of the cyclists as they go out and as they come in, but that would require me not doing the actual event.
Speaker 3:You'd still be involved in it. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2:Unless, unless I did the podcasting, we did the podcasting, um, on registration day, on the day before when we pick up our numbers Cause then we, then we don't have to worry about it.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, just getting that death ride, jersey putting it on I know.
Speaker 2:You know what? I'll make my decision once I find out what the artwork looks like.
Speaker 3:The artwork's always great. The artwork's always great.
Speaker 2:But hey, great catching up with you. I understand you're with fireball Paul this weekend and some of his friends as well.
Speaker 3:I got a big shout out Paul. Paul's an amazing person, but one of his endeavors and investments which he has a lot of is he invested and is part of a golf course. He owns a golf course with him and a few of his investor friends. He's actually the CFO of it too. It's a great course we played today. Believe it or not, paul, who says he can't hit a golf club to save his life I saw him play. He's actually really really improving. I was very impressed. Beautiful, beautiful place. Um, you know up here and um, you know, we'll, uh, we'll put a few different things. We'll have paul on to talk about his course. Think about it's like hey, you know what I'm about a golf course.
Speaker 3:Right, he doesn't know anything about golf right and he is totally immersed himself and he's a great business person so he knows how to do that in the investment. But he's learning a lot about golf and his friends and everything. I know he's loving it, so he invited us up here.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and just to plug it real quick, it's Grizzly Ranch Golf Course up in Portola, california. It's got a website and, man, the photos are amazing and it's beautiful and and hopefully we can get an event put together up there and bring some people up there as well and kind of check out the place as well.
Speaker 3:so I've never been up here, doug um you know either have I I've been to gray eagle. I came up here last night. It's a little bit past portola and then you start to come right into this particular area and it's just beautiful wooded. By the way, this morning, as we're having a breakfast burrito, four deer came by.
Speaker 3:The buck was on the front and literally are just walking by right and we all get up we're taking pictures, you know, standing up at we're outside and the waitress comes out and says hey, what are you guys doing? And she goes is there a bear? And she goes. She goes um. We said, no, there's just some deer. She goes. Is there a bear? And she goes. She goes um. We said, no, there's just some deer. She goes. Oh okay, yeah, you're from out of town, we only we only get up and look outside if there's a bear walking through. It's beautiful, doug, it's beautiful. You'll love it. You'll love it.
Speaker 2:So yeah, I look forward to getting up there soon, one day. Thank you All. Right, big D. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, man, and good luck to you guys on Sunday. I know you're coming back for the Sunday 10 mile run. Have a great time. I'll be. Uh, I'll be playing in the golf tournament tomorrow with my son Max down in Brentwood, and so wish me luck, man. Thank God it's going to be a scramble, but, uh, I'll talk to you. I'll talk to, we'll catch up later on after the weekend, man. So I'll just do like I always do say God bless and peace out, peace out.
