Marketing Musings
The space for musings on marketing that are too chaotic for a carousel, not strategic enough for an algorithm to deem them valuable, or polished enough for a post. Just honest reflections on the art and psychology of marketing, from someone who loves it, questions it, and lives it.

S2 Ep6 Why The Art Of Nuance Needs To Be Prevalent In Marketing
In this episode, I explore what it really means to practise marketing with nuance in a world obsessed with extremes.
From “hot takes” and controversy-driven content to shiny before-and-after transformations, online marketing has become a place where depth often gets lost in the pursuit of virality.
Here, I challenge this trend, sharing how black-and-white narratives flatten the truth of your work and disconnect you from the very people you’re here to serve. I reflect on the “messy middle”, the space where human experience, healing, and authenticity live and how honouring that in your marketing not only makes it more real, but more resonant.
If you’ve ever felt like your work can’t be condensed into a single clear-cut message, this episode will help you lean into nuance as your strength - not your obstacle. You’ll learn how to:
✨ Express the truth of your service without oversimplifying it
✨ Create content that connects deeply, not just widely
✨ Honour the grey areas that make your work human and magnetic

Most of the people who come to work with me have created their business from this (9:14) place of things before were cookie cutter they were all about fitting the mould it was all generic (9:21) and it didn't fully serve so now the way that they want to serve people is that they meet them in (9:28) their individuality they don't give them these one size fits all ways of doing things they don't make (9:35) these elaborate promises of an entirely different reality it's all about creating safety meeting (9:42) people where they are finding what's aligned for them in a way that is very nuanced it's very (9:49) dependent on each individual person what approaches are called for and as I said I think a lot of (9:56) people then struggle to translate this within marketing because we're constantly primed to (10:01) believe that marketing should almost be absent of nuance so that it's really clear click baity (10:10) gets eyes on it when actually it just doesn't match and this is what I've really been leaning (10:17) into at the moment because people also come to me for marketing for that same reason they want a (10:23) more nuanced approach they don't want to be given this one strategy will skyrocket your success (10:29) sell you out make you rich because they bought into that before and it was so misaligned for (10:36) them that a it works really bloody well and then they completely fell out of love with what they do (10:42) or b it just didn't work at all because it wasn't for them so my approach is very nuanced and (10:49) therefore my marketing needs to be but that also has to come with this acceptance that (10:56) may not reach as many people it's not going to be on the surface level that tends to be spread far (11:03) and wide that more people can understand because I am not bothered about having millions of eyes (11:09) on what I do I'm bothered about having people that say I really get it I feel really seen (11:16) and funnily enough that piece of content that was telling you about that creator maid (11:20) of how she's struggling here was one of the first times I have felt so truly seen by someone's (11:28) content about living here honestly I feel like everything I see about this whole like move to (11:34) coast live this life has felt like such a wild misrepresentation of what it is actually like (11:40) to the point that I feel unseen I feel really like wait is this just me am I the only one feeling (11:48) this am I crazy like is there something wrong with me am I just not right for here and seeing (11:54) others have that experience that maybe isn't the shiny narrative that's going to go really viral (12:00) and get all the views and create all this controversy has made me feel seen in such a (12:05) deep way that I am so grateful that that creator made that video and that is the kind of marketing (12:12) that I want to champion the kind of marketing I want to help people create is where they people (12:17) darling sliding in their dms like thank you so much for creating this I feel so seen within it (12:23) I feel like you've helped me really made sense of something or even just made me feel like I'm not (12:28) alone it's also the kind of marketing that is going to create this genuine change that we have (12:35) all built these services to do because it's real it's raw it's authentic the human experience is (12:43) inherently nuanced some things just do not make sense some things don't fit in these pretty boxes (12:49) or into these moulds that sometimes we wish they did right like I think sometimes we wish things (12:56) were a little bit clearer and were easier to kind of put in like this is what it is this is the way (13:02) that you do it I often speak about that in regards to marketing like the reason so many of us got (13:07) pulled into these generic strategies of marketing was actually because we just so desperately wanted (13:13) there to be this one simple way to do things but actually what we realised was that we are (13:20) misaligned with that it doesn't then feel true to us it doesn't feel authentic and this is where (13:26) nuance comes in as such a powerful force within marketing because when we can say you know it's (13:33) not totally clear it's not this or that it's not this one thing I honestly think that is my least (13:41) favourite hook in existence the one thing that it is never one thing that never you know like there's (13:49) one thing that changed everything I can guarantee it's a catalyst of very small things that changed (13:54) everything we may have this one moment that sticks out for sure but when it's like this one thing that (14:01) I did this one thing that happened it's not fully doing justice to the messiness of the human (14:09) experience and I have a whole episode on this I shared about the importance of infusing messiness (14:14) within your marketing and the reason being is because that's where the nuance is found that's (14:18) where the humanness is represented and where people find resonance and we can even link this (14:25) back to what I was saying about with our approach and what happens when we paint this pretty picture (14:30) I speak about this in the sexy sell episode but we paint this perfectly polished pretty picture (14:35) of what working with us looks like quite often people end up disappointed with the results or (14:43) we feel this stress of constantly trying to get people to a result that we've promised that perhaps (14:48) if we'd actually considered the nuance behind it wasn't really right to paint the picture of because (14:55) the approach is so much more nuanced than that like there's so many different things that (15:03) can unfold and might change and it's so dependent on each individual and this is the real art of (15:10) marketing is it's finding that balance between being clear and making sure people understand (15:16) our work and see themselves within it and that we are representing it in a way that people read (15:22) it and they go okay I get that but also not doing it at the expense of okay and also the the approach (15:30) may be a bit more of an exploration it might not have this definite outcome it might not be this (15:39) one way of doing things and you know what we can even allude to this within our marketing of like (15:44) I can't give you this clear step-by-step process because that would be a total contradiction to the (15:51) way I work which is intuitively I sit with you I tap into your energy I ask you questions and this (16:01) is guided by you that may affect the tools that I use or the process that we go through and the (16:07) outcome you get because it's individual and tailored and we can really start to own this (16:12) within our marketing because that I believe is what people are looking for so much more now they (16:19) want to see these approaches that don't just promise the world and paint this very clear way (16:24) of things being they want to explore the nuance of okay well actually there's many avenues that this (16:32) can go down and I'm not just buying into this shiny picture of a cell and I'm not following (16:39) this strategy that someone else has used because as I've said we've all done that we're all burnt (16:46) out from that we're also all burnt out from content that totally lacks any nuance because (16:51) we don't feel represented within it we want that human experience to feel like it's captured (16:58) within other people's content we want the real truth of an approach that isn't so clear and (17:05) black and white and perfectly polished to feel like it's represented within a sales page so that (17:12) we feel like we're really seeing the service for what it is and we have that deep resonance that (17:18) can only come from an authentic expression so as I said this is a big topic and I feel like it's one (17:26) that it's not easy to really sit with I think so many of us are in this process at the moment of (17:32) unlearning what we've been told about marketing and particularly in the world of social media (17:36) that is so catered to controversy and really stripping the essence out of something to make (17:44) it surface level to make it more tangible to make it more algorithm friendly or more of a hook that (17:51) we're losing the true essence of humanness creativity resonance and you'll know if you've (17:58) listened to this podcast it's really what I am trying to infuse back into marketing and I think (18:02) that this is such a pivotal point to that because being able to really capture yourself your clients (18:10) and your service comes down to honouring the nuance within everything that you're talking about (18:16) it doesn't have to be this perfectly painted clear picture that is either controversial or (18:23) surface level it can be this messiness where things aren't black and white they're not (18:29) completely clear and we can really own that within our approach we can own that within the way that (18:35) we share about our work within the ways that we create content and of course as I said we have (18:40) to be okay with the fact that they that may then not go far and wide and people may not get it in (18:45) the same way but that is what claiming your truth really requires that is what really honouring the (18:52) unique approach that you have to share needs from you and I know that's not easy I know that requires (18:59) so much unlearning that's very much what I am in the process of right now but I'm coming out the (19:03) other side of it and it feels really beautiful and as I've said in previous episodes I've never (19:08) received as many messages as I do right now of people saying I really resonate I feel so seen (19:14) I've been thinking the exact same thing and that is because I have really woven nuance into every (19:19) inch of my marketing to make sure that I am expressing the real truth of things I'm not just (19:25) telling people what they want to hear and creating these shiny processes people don't want that and (19:31) we need to start claiming that and the more that we do the more that I believe we will start to see (19:37) nuanced expressions around I already feel like it is starting to happen within the storytelling (19:41) element of content and it's becoming so much more enjoyable to consume and I feel like us and I say (19:48) us because you're here listening to this with me as change makers need to champion this need to (19:53) champion the raw real realities versus the polished surface level hook like ways of creating (20:02) I would love to hear if this episode has brought anything up for you if anything has kind of
