S2 Ep7 Why Translating The Power of What You Do In Marketing Feels So Hard

Emma Season 2 Episode 7

In this episode, I explore what it truly means to be a visionary in business, to imagine what doesn’t yet exist and bring it to life through your work. Inspired by Caroline Myss’ teachings on the visionary archetype, I unpack the challenges and power of creating marketing that reflects new ways of thinking and being.

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood, ahead of your time, or unsure how to translate your deep vision into words that connect, this episode is for you. I dive into why visionary marketing requires trust, creativity, and the courage to lead with imagination, not just strategy.

You’ll learn how to:
✨ Market your work when no one else “gets it” yet
✨ Bridge your vision so others can see themselves within it
✨ Release old, limiting “fossil world” beliefs about how things should be done
✨ Claim your creativity and trust that your truth is enough

This isn’t about fitting into formulas, it’s about leading from the future you can already see.

I'm your host Emma, a (0:36) marketing expert of over a decade.I truly love what I do and I'm bursting with knowledge to (0:41) share with you all, so sit back, relax and let's dive in. Hi and welcome back to another episode. (0:49) I'm recording this at a very unusual time for me, usually by now I am curled up on the sofa (0:55) watching TV, potentially game show reruns because you may not know this about me but I absolutely (1:02) love game shows, my whole family are obsessed with them so when I feel like I'm really far (1:08) away from them, which I am, I watch them and it's really nice and it's really comforting (1:12) but I'm not quite there yet because I had to pull out the mic right now, you know those moments where (1:18) you're like, I must create now, it must be recorded and captured in this moment but I have just been (1:26) watching Caroline Mai's video on visionaries. If you're not familiar with her work, which I was not, (1:32) I have just been pointed this out by somebody who had a call with me, it essentially speaks on (1:39) different archetypes and how we can fit into different archetypes and you know that helps us (1:44) to really understand about our purpose and our career and different elements and I'm not overly (1:49) familiar with it, you may be more than I am but typically I'm not massively drawn to archetypes, (1:56) I find myself always kind of across one or the other and never really knowing what I fit myself (2:01) into and also kind of resistant to fitting myself into them but when I watched this video I was like (2:08) oh this makes so much sense, not just for me but for the people that I work with and for the (2:16) approaches that are necessary within marketing so I'm not going to spend too much time explaining (2:20) exactly what this is, I will leave the YouTube link below if you want to explore it more (2:24) but essentially the way that she speaks about visionaries is people who are able to send their (2:29) imagination ahead of this world and then report back on what's possible so this is kind of like (2:35) being able to see what other people can't see, being able to go beyond what is just in this (2:43) moment and being able to see more and I guess for me that's kind of felt like always questioning (2:49) what is and being like but like this is the way we've done it but is this the way that we should (2:54) do it and is there another way to do it and Caroline Mai speaks about this like fossil world (2:59) that we currently live in but are also transitioning out of so this very much being (3:05) like we have our land and we have our space and we have our resources and they're limited and it (3:12) kind of makes us competitive and we have these limiting beliefs around it and it's kind of (3:17) diminishing versus this world of energy where there's such an abundance and anything can be (3:24) created and she speaks about how our imagination as visionaries is really the key to this unfolding (3:33) it's like we can imagine it first and then part of our role is bringing it into the world and she (3:39) uses this really good analogy that I liked of you know if you're going to get dressed in the morning (3:45) you first need to imagine what you are going to wear and then you start to bring your outfit (3:51) into existence through the clothes that are in your wardrobe and this has to lead and it has to (3:57) go first and I often speak about this in regards to visionaries change makers the different types (4:02) of language that is used for it that the really hard part of this journey is that there isn't a (4:08) paved way so many of the people who come to work with me are seeing the ways that the industry (4:14) has done things or other creators have experienced things or they're actually just not seeing what (4:21) they want to create at all and then it's like they've got this blank canvas it's this unpaved (4:27) path that isn't well navigated and they have to really figure it out and they like how it's (4:34) described here report back on how we go about doing that and the hard thing with that that (4:41) actually she speaks out really beautifully is we have so many limiting beliefs that arrive from (4:47) that fossil world as she calls it where things are limited and we have all of this doubt and (4:54) this fear and we're kind of pitted against each other and things are oversimplified and they are (5:00) not this like sky's the limit way of thinking that we as visionaries tend to embody we can (5:07) really see this better different more aligned way of doing things but sometimes we can struggle (5:15) with the limiting belief of well there's so many different many different limiting beliefs actually (5:21) like i can't even name those something that's coming a lot within my sessions at the moment is (5:25) you know clients being like i really want to share these stories but like will the right people (5:32) recognise that will they get it will they understand it is that for them or does it (5:37) perfectly tie back to my service in the past i've had success from being really strategic (5:43) so if i'm not overly strategic in the way that i create will i still be successful can i really (5:50) have the kinds of success and impact and expansion that i desire from being really (5:55) aligned and true to myself you know these are some of the beliefs that come up in kind of contrast to (6:01) this visionary way of thinking where anything is possible there's so much abundance energy is (6:07) everything and it's limitless so when i was listening to this i was first feeling really (6:13) seen and like yes this is why things feel difficult sometimes but also feel really exciting (6:19) because it's kind of like this pioneer energy where i have all of this like new ideas and (6:25) different ways of doing things to bring to the world but i also have all of the doubt fear and (6:30) questioning around that and when i was thinking about that it really got me reflecting on the (6:37) process of marketing specifically for visionaries and i speak about this in a whole other episode (6:43) of why change makers need change making marketing and how we really need to make sure that the (6:48) change that we are trying to create within our services we reflect within our processes of (6:53) well and i think the next layer to this in regards to this concept of visionaries is that (7:01) we can see a vision that other people can't necessarily see and i was just talking to a (7:07) client about this of like when we're so in our work and we have like these really strong visions (7:14) and these ways of doing things and we felt these deep senses of alignment sometimes the way that (7:20) we speak about our work is through that lens as though everybody else already gets it and the key (7:26) bit about being a visionary is that actually others don't get it and not even that they don't fully (7:34) believe that it's possible yet and the funny thing is there's so many people that come to work with (7:39) me they know their human design they know their astrology they know themselves really well (7:44) and quite often they say that within their design they need to experience something and then share on (7:51) that and i know this is very much within my chart as well of like i kind of go through have all of (7:57) these experiences and then kind of report back on that and be like this is what does and doesn't (8:02) work this is what's possible this is what aligns and of course that's just for me but in me sharing (8:08) that about myself other people find their own resonance within it and so in that way i'm being (8:14) a visionary within the ways that i create because i have imagined something as possible i've gone (8:21) out and lived that experience of it and then through me sharing my own experiences of this (8:27) vision of this way of being people are able to see themselves within it and it naturally invites (8:34) them to question their own limiting beliefs about being able to do that the client who i was just (8:40) referencing she said that she'd listened to one of my podcasts where i speak about how when we don't (8:45) give ourselves the permission to say what we really want to say we end up squashing our creativity (8:50) and it had led her on this like independent journey of really questioning this narrative (8:55) within herself of like okay i have all these stories i want to share why are they sitting (9:00) in my dress collecting dust and it's because i don't fully believe that i can say that (9:06) and even though i know that they're powerful stories i have these doubts around other people (9:12) being able to then recognise themselves and my work within it we know this is kind of questioned (9:18) like is it relevant and then she was noticing how because she was going down that line of questioning (9:24) her creativity was completely crushed so this was an experience i had and i witnessed over and over (9:30) again i then shared that and then somebody else saw themselves within it and then went on this (9:35) journey of reflecting on that and questioning it so by me being a visionary i am getting other (9:43) people to think in this more visionary way and also really helping them champion their own vision (9:51) their own way of being a visionary and trusting in themselves and in what they can imagine and (9:58) what they want to create and birth into the world and this is really not easy like i was thinking (10:04) as i was watching this youtube i was like wow i kind of wish i wasn't a visionary in some ways (10:10) because it's really not easy to be realising things and seeing the world in ways that so (10:16) many other people don't see and this is what caroline my speaks about in this is that not (10:22) everybody is visionaries not everybody is supposed to be a visionary i think the world would actually (10:26) really struggle to function if we were all visionaries but if we are somebody that has (10:33) this archetype alive and well within us and also we tend to attract other visionaries into our work (10:40) it really requires this claiming of not having the answers of not having this perfectly polished (10:48) strategy to follow or this way of doing things that is guaranteed to work i spoke about this (10:55) when i created the change maker episode because this is something i'd really realised when i was (11:00) in bali i took this pause and i was like okay nothing is working you know nothing feels right (11:07) nothing really feels aligned to me because i'm just not supposed to do it in the way that it's (11:13) been done and i started to have these moments in my journal where i was reflecting on how now (11:19) in hindsight i can see that i've always kind of been this visionary in the sense that i've always (11:25) questioned stuff and i've always been like but why and why don't we do it like this and when i (11:30) was in group projects at uni people would always get so annoyed at me because they would be like (11:36) okay let's just do it let's just do it like this and i would always be like but does that really (11:41) make sense does that really align like couldn't we explore this more and they're just like can't we (11:46) just you know do the job hand in the assignment and go to the pub i'm just like but there's all (11:51) this possibility and these other ways that we can think about this and i think it's why i'm such a (11:55) creative person because i do have a really strong imagination and i will ask the questions but the (12:02) same time to be really honest like it's actually been quite an isolating experience to be like that (12:07) as well because it can feel like a lot of the time you are misunderstood and you end up questioning (12:13) things that others are just really content with and then you would think well is there something (12:18) wrong with me like why is no one else questioning this why is everybody else just content with how (12:22) things are why am i the one that's got to be like let's do it differently let's like not go down (12:29) this path that is really well trodden and has very clear navigation let's go down this really (12:34) bumpy one that looks like it disappears halfway down the path and who knows where it's going to (12:40) lead and i think what really creating powerful marketing as a visionary invites us to claim (12:49) is this trust that actually we cannot be given this prescribed way of sharing our work with the world (12:57) of creating different services of running a business because as a visionary we're not supposed (13:02) to do things like that we are supposed to do things in the sense of we imagine something different and (13:09) we go out and we create it and part of the ways we do that is we get to know ourselves really well (13:15) we tap into this infinite abundance of energy and we claim what we are really here to say and do (13:24) beyond these limiting beliefs and ideas and like projections from others of how we should do so (13:33) and i honestly think that the reason it is so important to have these conversations is because (13:40) you need to be chatting with others who are not necessarily doing the same as you but also get (13:47) this path of being a visionary and i really want this to be a space where it doesn't feel so (13:53) isolating to be on that journey and also to champion that you're not doing something wrong (13:59) because you haven't been able to stick to others ways of doing things in fact it's such a claiming (14:06) of that different way and then within our marketing it's this real encouragement for (14:14) others to be able to tap into their own imagination or to also if they aren't (14:20) visionaries like your clientele to be able to see the vision that you hold and that you've created (14:27) that is such a purpose for so many of us like so many people who come to work with me they have (14:33) this purpose to create a new vision a different way of doing things and they are in that phase (14:38) of kind of like trial and erroring and being guided by that imagination and making it happen (14:43) and then what i tend to see happen is the block comes with like okay well now i get it and now (14:48) i've embodied it and practise it but how do i translate that to others how do i show this (14:56) and this is where they get caught up like i said with the okay let me use this strategy (15:00) to try to convey this vision and of course it never fits the way that this vision needs to (15:08) be conveyed is through the stories of finding it discovering it embodying it alchemising it (15:15) the stories that are probably sitting in your drafts right now because for people to believe (15:20) in change they need to see change and they need to understand it and they also need to believe that it (15:26) is possible for them and that's why we have to create this kind of marketing where people can (15:33) see and feel the vision they can see themselves within it or if we're speaking to visionaries (15:39) they can see their own vision and feel it and trust in it and that's not easy to create within (15:47) marketing as someone who's very much a visionary for bringing that to life within marketing it has (15:55) very much been a process of me fully claiming it within myself of me listening to all of the (16:01) strategies that people are always putting in front of me in terms of like do this do that (16:05) mark it like this all of the knowledge that i've had from corporate of do this like that and sell (16:12) this thing and this is how you convert and all of this so much noise and really part of being (16:18) a visionary kind of creator is being able to silence that noise and actually leading with (16:23) imagination so creativity our own ways our own alignment and letting people see themselves (16:31) within that letting people feel it so deeply and the way that you create it is not by overly (16:37) strategising your marketing or following other strategies it's by really claiming what you (16:42) have discovered with full trust that that's part of your role as a visionary part of your role is (16:49) to be creating these new things that perhaps people haven't seen before or speaking on these concepts (16:54) in a way that maybe they haven't understood when others have spoken about them or really through (16:59) your own embodiment of that experience putting your unique expression that is the piece that (17:07) they finally go oh i get it now you know many people have said this before but i never really (17:11) got it and this feels exciting for me because i feel like i've spoken before how i spent a lot (17:17) of time out of love with marketing and really questioning myself and so caught up in what i (17:23) should be doing that i just didn't think i should be doing it at all to be honest and there's (17:28) something about this energy of like really claiming the visionary and claiming this like (17:33) as i refer to it this change maker way of being within our work that suddenly it feels exciting (17:39) again suddenly it feels like the confines and the prescriptive ways of doing things are released and (17:46) then this like true way of being comes through and this client that i was just speaking to was (17:51) actually reflecting back to me of like when we really claim that like soul's truth and what we (17:56) really want to say and what we really believe and have embodied and move through and the visions that (18:01) we have there is so much potency within that and part of the process is trusting that like trusting (18:09) that it's enough and that is very much a journey i'm on you can probably tell through these episodes (18:15) where i'm very much like figuring this out as well and yeah i'm excited to see what unfolds by this (18:23) and this as i've been saying in quite a few of my most recent episodes is not like a fully baked (18:27) idea it's very much me coming to you having just watched a youtube video feeling excited about it (18:34) channelling on what has initially landed for me and there's a part of me that wants to go oh no (18:40) that's not polished enough right we've not strategised on this we've not planned out the (18:45) podcast and woven in a cell to our service and all of these things and then there's that visionary (18:50) part that's like this is the new way of marketing where actually we share from this raw authentic (18:56) expression and people find resonance within that and fill their own magnetism towards it so (19:02) i'm right there with you i would love to know what came up for you from this episode and if there's (19:08) anything that yeah feels really alive that you're like oh this feels alive but i've got no one to (19:12) share it with i would love
