Adulting comes with weird expectations nobody warned us about and we’re done pretending we love them. We’re Koa and Sarah, and we’re unpacking the everyday “grown-up” things that secretly get under our skin, the kind of stuff you laugh about after you’ve lived it: overpriced coffee that’s never consistent, being told a salad is a meal, and the pressure to be the kind of adult who always has it together.

We talk honestly about meal prep fatigue, leftover burnout, and why big Louisiana portions just make sense. Then we pivot into modern life stressors that sneak up on moms: hydration culture that makes you feel guilty for not carrying a water cup everywhere, group texts you can’t mute, and the social pressure to respond when your brain is already full. And yes, we said what we said about sparkling water, plus the trendy hobbies we feel like we “should” be into, from camping to pickleball to mahjong.

We also get real about parenting weekends, kid birthday parties, hot outdoor sports days, and the difference between doing what looks fun on social media and doing what actually feels doable. Along the way, we shout out our June sponsor, Go Big Entertainment, a Louisiana event entertainment team bringing DJs, lighting, photo booths, sparklers, and more to weddings, parties, and corporate events (G-E-A-U-X-Big.com).

If you’ve ever felt like adulthood is one long performance, this one will make you feel seen. Subscribe, share with a friend who needs a laugh, and leave a review so more people can find Coffee Talk with the Cajun Mamas.

Go Boxes And Big Portions

SPEAKER_03

Around here we have go boxes. Yeah. You know, to go bags to go home with it. Yeah, we don't do small portions around here. Not really. But I'm not for it. Not for it, huh? Let's see. Meal prepping. Oh.

Welcome And Sponsor Shoutout

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Coffee Talk with the Cajun Mamas. Grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let's dive into real conversations about life, motherhood, and a little inspiration to brighten your day.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to Coffee Talk with the Cajun Mamas. It is the last week of June. Okay. Have you been on your vacation yet? No. I have.

SPEAKER_03

And that's why you're so tan right now. Just glorious.

SPEAKER_01

Just glowing with the Destined Beach Sun. All right. We are going to start off this episode by thanking Go Big Entertainment. Thank y'all so much for being the sponsor for June for Coffee Talk with the Cajun Mamas. We have loved sharing about your business. And we just love how much you offer everyone, especially when they're trying to plan events.

SPEAKER_03

Listen, we like to party around here. I don't know if everywhere else, anywhere else in the country parties like Louisiana. But a go big is G E A U X. That means go.

SPEAKER_01

If you type in go big in your in your phone, I don't know what would you come up with. But G-E-A-U-X-Big dot com, that's where you need to be.

SPEAKER_03

That's where you need to go. Okay. What do they offer? They offer all your entertainment for you events like DJ servicing services, music.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

And boom.

SPEAKER_02

Big boom booms. The boom booms. And the fun. Boom boom in a room. The core. The core to go boom. We like that. We're Koa and Sarah, and we like the boom. Ah, yes. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, Lord. From a Cajun country wedding to um big celebrations. Your baby birthday party. Corporate events too.

SPEAKER_03

Christmas parties. Your Po Kino night. Extra Pocino. Family reunions, even. You need to give big go go big. Go big. That's the one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. On social media. Follow them on social media. G-A-U-X-Big.com. Go check them out. Go see what they got.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_01

Adult Responsibilities We Secretly Hate

SPEAKER_01

Today's episode is going to hit you right here in the heart. Oh. Okay.

SPEAKER_03

And maybe the funny bone, I hope.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. We are going to be talking about some things that are grown-up. Adult things. Grown up things.

SPEAKER_03

That we secretly hate. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

Like maybe we're supposed to like them. Or like because you're an adult now, like these are things you have to just do. But like really nobody likes it.

SPEAKER_01

Right. You get to do them. So my kids are always asking me, hey mom, is it better being an adult than it is being a kid? And I'm like, absolutely not. No, like you get to make your own choices, but then that's the sucky part.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You are you're responsible for all the choices.

SPEAKER_03

And when you're a mama, a choices of other people, too.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_03

You know?

SPEAKER_01

Ultimately, you are in charge of that.

SPEAKER_03

And the bills, you know. Oh, we could just talk a whole conversation about all the things, adult things.

SPEAKER_01

But this is not gonna go that deep.

SPEAKER_03

No, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, this is really good. This is meant to be funny.

SPEAKER_03

This is meant to be funny.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna kick it off. Go ahead. Tell me something. Because this is one of our favorite topics. Okay, coffee.

Why Home Coffee Wins

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Probably I'm supposed to like going to Starbucks and all those places, but nothing hits like coffee at my house.

SPEAKER_03

I just can't imagine living in a world where like you don't have your own coffee maker at home and you go buy coffee every day.

SPEAKER_01

Or you do and you forego doing it at home to go sit in a line where they're not gonna make it right anyway. That's another thing.

SPEAKER_03

They're not gonna never and it's not consistent either. No. You know, you go to uh a coffee shop one time, this barista is too sweet. This barista is not sweet enough. And same drink, same order.

SPEAKER_01

I am not willing to put my morning on the line for that. No, and my happiness.

SPEAKER_03

No, I know if I make it at home, it's gonna taste the same every time.

SPEAKER_01

And fan so fancy coffee is one thing that hurts my nerves as a grown person that I'm probably supposed to like and enjoy the convenience of. But also it's expensive. It's so expensive.

SPEAKER_03

And then by the time you leave a table, I'd rather spend my money on food than drink. I'd rather eat my money. Yeah.

Salad For Lunch Isn’t Lunch

SPEAKER_03

Speaking of food, what about like a salad for lunch? Like, I know that's I'm probably supposed to, like, I'm I'll just have the salad.

SPEAKER_01

But that's not food? That's not filling. I like a salad at home. I like I like a salad.

SPEAKER_03

I like a side salad with my meal.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you don't like to have like a little ham salad sometimes? You don't like to have like a little chicken salad? A chicken salad? Salad? Yeah, like cut-up chicken.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, a chicken on a salad. Chicken. Okay, I'm thinking like chicken salad. No, no, no. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

That's good too. But also not for me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I do. I feel like there was a time in my life, like when I thought I was being good, trying, like eating out, but like trying to be good. It would be like, oh, give me the Caesar with chicken. But I was like, no.

SPEAKER_01

No, I want to go eat the real food. Like if I'm gonna pay money.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I want to eat the real food.

SPEAKER_03

I I but I don't like it. I like a salad. I do like a salad, but it's gonna have all the things on it. It's gonna have like the whole salad boar on there. Mm-hmm. And drowning in dressing, so it's really not healthy when you think about it.

SPEAKER_01

Like when you go to Mr. Gaddy's and they have like the whole salad bor. I would rather eat that salad bar than eat the pizza.

SPEAKER_03

It's all about the salad bar at Mr. Gaddy's for me. Depends on the place, eh? Dino's though, and Dino's um chef salad, because of the ranch, though, if I'm gonna be honest. Oh, the ranch is super. The ranch is superior at Dino's.

SPEAKER_01

I like the pasta salad at Dino's. I've never had it. Okay, so it's like salad, but really a lot of pasta. It's a fried chicken, or you can get um like, you know, grilled chicken. But who wants to do that?

SPEAKER_03

Who wants to do that?

SPEAKER_01

So I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I feel like that's a good thing. But I'm still having pizza.

SPEAKER_01

But I'm still having pizza. Oh, yeah, 100%.

SPEAKER_03

So there's that.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I don't like going to fancy restaurants, period. Uh, but if they're gonna give me a small portion, which is not usually um a thing around here.

SPEAKER_03

Around here, I feel like no, if you go somewhere and you don't have enough to take home for leftovers, you that's a no for me. That's a no. Uh-huh. Around here, we have go boxes. Yeah. You know, to go bags to go. We're going home with it. Yeah, we don't do small portions around here. Not really. But I'm not for it. I'm not for it, huh?

SPEAKER_01

Let's see.

Meal Prep Fatigue And Leftovers

SPEAKER_03

Meal prepping. Oh, God. And I do it, yeah. Well, not for me so much anymore. I cook ahead. I do cook on the weekend to make the week easier. And my husband is faithful, y'all. He will, his little glass dishes with the the lid, he will portion out his meals for the week, and that's how he stays on track. But he still but he dreads it though. Like, nobody likes doing that.

SPEAKER_01

I don't do but okay, you think it's because y'all live so far away from civilization that y'all can't like get pizza or sonic or whatever? Because like, sometimes I'm just tired of that. I'm tired of them leftovers. I have eaten gumbo for five days in a row and I'm done. We I want a pizza. You know, we do say that often.

SPEAKER_03

We're like, good thing we can't get Uber Eats out here. Or good thing so and so don't live over. Because and I'm what, 10 minutes from church point? That's it. But I'm still too far. That's still too far for me to go run up to Sonny's and get something. That's not worth it. So I'm gonna eat my food at home.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but then you see, whenever I get out of my house, that's always an opportunity for me to get food. Always. So, like if I gotta go to Lafayette, where are we closer to breakfast? Are we closer to lunch? Am I getting donuts or am I getting a you getting something while you're out, is what you're saying. Yeah, like it's always on my mind. So I don't know how y'all do it, but I really, really, really appreciate that about you. And I I love that for you. Um, I really don't like the amount of water that um everybody is

Hydration Pressure And Emotional Support Water

SPEAKER_01

telling me to drink these days. I feel like society is making me need to hydrate and really in my brain that I need to hydrate more than humanly possible.

SPEAKER_03

I I I just told Nathan this this past Sunday. We got out of church and I couldn't wait to get to the car to have a drink of water. And I'm like, what did we do as kids going places we did not have water cups with us? No. Why were we not? We weren't thirsty back then, or what, like, why am I so thirsty now? I always have a water cup with me. Yeah, why is that?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's emotional support water, and and just because you said you were thirsty, it said that now I'm thirsty. Now you need a drink. Well, like if my muscles be tight or something, I'm like, man, I didn't drink enough water today. You know, but I know for a fact that them old people back in the day didn't care about no dang water. They was drinking whiskey at nine o'clock in the morning.

unknown

Dang.

SPEAKER_01

They were. And coffee. They drank coffee. Coffee and tea all day until they drank.

SPEAKER_03

But that's mostly water. You know, tea is mostly water.

SPEAKER_01

Or people who drink just soda. Pet coke's girl. How do they do it? I don't know how they do it. I feel like a big lump.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Yep, even though it's diet or something, that's so no, no, no. Nah, I'm not about it. You gotta get you gotta flush them kidneys out. Exactly. See, we are forced to be cut. My kidneys be hurting right now, just talking about drinking nothing but coke all day. Uh-uh. No.

SPEAKER_01

No, I'm not for it either.

Group Chats And Response Guilt

SPEAKER_01

Um, oh, this is one uh group text.

SPEAKER_03

I don't mind a group text. I know you don't. I don't.

SPEAKER_01

You're very good at them. But I like sometimes, man. And this is not even like I feel like I am in so many different messaging groups. I can't keep up.

SPEAKER_03

There's a lot of chats. There's a lot of chats. Yeah, I mute notifications on some of them, but a group text, you can't you can't mute notifications on that.

SPEAKER_01

So like my family group text, like I'll try to keep up with that as much as I can. But um, as far as like, man, it's just hard.

SPEAKER_03

There's so many different types and so many different then you feel pressured, like I should be responding, but I'm not because everybody else responded.

SPEAKER_01

But then also I don't respond on principle sometimes. I rebel against the response.

SPEAKER_03

I have refused to respond to this take.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just like, okay, um, I've got to take a second, and then I I want to or I want to respond and completely forget, type out the thing and never send it. Like, that's just I don't know, but that's a me thing.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, I know I'm I'm

Sparkling Water And Other “Trends”

SPEAKER_03

circling back to water, but you know what what I feel like are like are the are we supposed to like sparkling water as we are an adult now? You know, like it's like water when you go somewhere, and I I know this is like like I've only encountered this like when we would go to Mexico or somewhere for like it's like you want steel or sparkling water, and I'm like steel water regular, like I don't like sparkling. Why would I drink sparkling water? It tastes like static. Yeah, I don't get the point of it, and I don't get the like hype about it. Even flavored sparkling water is like it smells, it tastes yucky.

SPEAKER_01

It is there used to be back in the 90s, there was this sparkling water, okay? And it comes in a blue bottle and it could have cherry in it.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, and it could have different kinds, it's elite, it just looks so fancy.

SPEAKER_01

It's fancy, but it was I still feel it right here in my throat. It was disgusting. Yeah, I remember uh my parents might have even had some, and it was like must have been cheap because my mama and them, they wasn't buying all that type of stuff. No, if I find it, because I want to say like I've seen it recently, and I'm just like, who is out of it?

SPEAKER_03

But why, why, yeah. Like maybe you might want to chime in on the comments if you one of these people that like to drink sparkling waters. Or like, even if it's the alcohol seltzer ones, but it's not sweet at all, it just It tastes like Skittle Forts. Throw it away.

SPEAKER_01

It tastes like from Sarah Richard.

SPEAKER_03

Skittle for Skittle Forts. The essence of a Skittle.

SPEAKER_01

Yes. It tastes like it's now my mother-in-law, my mother-in-law does not like water, so she will put a meal in it or something like that. She'll flavor it.

SPEAKER_03

I'm fine with that. Yeah. I can get on board with that.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, a little Kool-Aid. Yeah. This is like a little adult Kool-Aid. But the one with the static in it, no thanks.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Um, camping.

Camping With Amenities Only

SPEAKER_01

How do you feel about that?

SPEAKER_03

Well, I I'm okay. I'm pro-camping, but like in a night in a camper, like a nice camper.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I feel like as a parent, like I have to be some type of way. I feel like this age, our I like at this age, I should like camping. I should be bringing my kids camping and I should be okay with that. We can't. Yeah, all my life. But I can't stand it.

SPEAKER_03

Oh well. You're not a nature outdoorsy sweat, bugs, dirt type of girl. And that's you're just not.

SPEAKER_01

It's okay. But I feel like all the people this age, you know, 35 and up, okay, are camper people. They all have a camper. I don't know if it's because they have so much money they don't know what to do with it anymore. And so, like That is not the case with groceries that price anymore. Like, okay, we've done everything in our lives.

SPEAKER_03

Time to buy a camper. I would take that camper money and buy like a little house, like a little cabin or something like that. Like a little. I want a beach house one day. Oh that's my goal in life. You're gonna bring me. Of course. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_01

I'm for it. I'm for it. 100%.

SPEAKER_03

That's on the vision board of my life.

SPEAKER_01

Like I would I wouldn't mind having a camp with all the amenities.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, yeah. Not like a camp like like where my husband goes camp.

SPEAKER_01

No, uh-uh.

SPEAKER_03

I could feel my skin crawling.

SPEAKER_01

No, I don't want that.

SPEAKER_03

That's not rough. I don't like I don't want to rough it. What about like DIY Pinterest

Pinterest Pressure And Kid Parties

SPEAKER_03

projects? Like we've talked about this before and how we like we not Pinterest mamas, but like should should we be at some point.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like there are times where I was, you know? Like with the first two kids. The first one, yeah. Or like, you know, when I didn't have no money and so everything needed to be DIY'd. Uh huh. Uh so for instance, um, when my sister-in-law Devony got married, shout out Devony, um, I didn't, we didn't have a whole lot of money. So I made her wedding gift. And I love it. It still hangs in her house right now. And I just like I that's all I could do. You know what I'm saying? But she loved it. It's still hanging in her house. And um, but I like to do stuff like that sometimes, you know. Um, especially like I don't know, with decor and stuff like that. You can always kind of fake it till you make it. Juz it up a little bit. Juz it up. But as far as the Pinterest birthday party, which brings me to my next subject, birthday parties. No, kid birthday parties. I'm not a fan. I'm not a fan. I'm really not. Um, if you are not immediate family, I'm we're probably not gonna go. And I'm okay with um sacrificing my children's social life. Sorry, kids.

SPEAKER_03

Mom does not what if it's a drop-off party, but that's okay, but then like if you don't really know the people, then you don't really want to drop them off. But if I also if I don't really know the people, why are you be why are my kids invited to your party anyway?

SPEAKER_01

I just feel it makes me feel uncomfortable. I said it. You said it, and and I'm sure everybody was thinking it, so oh yeah. I I I don't know. If you like if you're an adult who likes that's weird. If you like go to children's birthday parties. No, but like we have, you know, some people just are like, yeah, we want to their birthday party, we're gonna have their birthday party. I'm like, that's just not the way that I'm gonna spend my weekend selfishly.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. So uh that's me though. Watching kids sporting events out in the heat in the Louisiana heat, like there are some parents that are just like ride or dive at the ballpark, and I do believe they really do love it. Um I I don't know if I would. I mean, I guess if my kids were into it, I would. But like I'm kind of glad they don't they not.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so let's look at it at this lens.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Your kids do dancing, they do comp dance. Yeah, you will take your little butt and you will go with them to do comp dance. And but it's inside, it's inside in the air conditioning. And you just made a better choice. I think it comes down to choices.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Your choice. But then also you could also but could you have your parents that do that, and then they also do sports, and they also do this. And the type, I'm not doing all that. You could pick one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pick one, pick your favorite. I feel like we're on the same plane with that too. I think so.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. And I I don't know if I feel bad about it or not.

SPEAKER_01

I don't feel any I don't feel bad about it at all. Good. Then me neither. You don't think you should. I think it's just I think it's great for the the people that do that, and I think it's great for me who doesn't.

SPEAKER_03

Who doesn't? Because there takes all kinds of kinds. Um what's another one? Do you like Oh, I

Wine Culture Versus Margaritas

SPEAKER_03

got one. If you don't okay, pretending to like wine when I just want a margarita or something. Or a beer. Yes, like I don't understand. I'm an adult. I'm not am I supposed to like wine? I just don't. If it's the only alcohol there, I still sometimes I wouldn't steal because it gives me a headache too. I'm fine. Even a little few glasses of wine giving.

SPEAKER_01

I don't care for it. Like if we're going on a wine tasting, like one time on vacation, we went on a wine tasting and it was so fun. That was fun. Um, and like getting a couple bottles of wine and then we grilled. Oh, yeah, and that was so fun. But like, I'm not just gonna be like, I'm gonna go get a bottle of wine.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-mm.

SPEAKER_01

And I'll come over.

SPEAKER_03

But like, is something wrong with my taste buds? Because there are people like our age that that is their drink of choice. Like, oh, I just this wine is so good. I think they're more refined than us. I must be. My palate is still developing. I'm not finished getting it. Give me a can of Skittle farts and let's go.

SPEAKER_01

No, I refuse that I refuse the Skittle Farts. Well, I I refuse the wine. Unless, okay, it's a box wine. The France.

SPEAKER_03

Or homemade. I will drink homemade like muscadine wine. I will go all day on that and ha and deal with my headache because it's tasty. But I just don't like I don't know, red wine.

SPEAKER_02

Red wine.

SPEAKER_01

Red wine. No, the one in the box is my favorite. I will drink that and and and have a couple tipsy nights in the winter. Winter wine. Winter wine.

SPEAKER_03

Okay, summer summer beer.

SPEAKER_01

Summer beer, winter wine. Winter wine. But only whenever Brittany and Trey comes in, we're like, okay, box wine night. I think it's more of a people and atmosphere for you.

SPEAKER_03

You're not drinking box wine by yourself.

SPEAKER_01

Because that one time we went to New York and I got a glass of wine with my pizza. Remember? I thought it was really sketchy. We went to this little pizza place and it was nine nine times. And they had some sketch, sketch people, and we walked past them, and you walk past them like a bus, and I was really scared.

SPEAKER_03

You gotta act like you somebody they don't want to mess with. Like I'm from here. I'm a native.

SPEAKER_01

We obviously look like tourists. We were bundled up.

SPEAKER_02

You got curly hair.

SPEAKER_03

That immediately took it. Let's say it all could be Italian. There's been a big Italian uh people over there. And they got curly hair.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Do they?

SPEAKER_03

Sarah.

SPEAKER_02

You're so uncultured. You uncultured swam. With your box. I don't know. I've been to New York three times. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I may not be going to Paris, but well, you're gonna drink wine in Paris, though, huh? I'm gonna be forced to. I'm gonna have to. Dessert wine. You'll come back Parisian. Drinking wine is the Parisian way?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Okay. That's true. I just hope it's sweet. I'll drink it if it's sweet, but if it's like dry like that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh. Okay. So no, but you could do it over there.

SPEAKER_03

Look, you'd be like the I'm gonna I'm gonna have to for just picture purposes, if nothing else. Fake it till I make it.

SPEAKER_01

You do it for the experience of it. Yeah, we'll see how that goes. Okay. Well, later on, do you want to come over for some wine?

SPEAKER_03

I will drink whatever if I'm in your presence.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I love you. If you have it truly, I would prefer that. Okay, well, I better go to the store then. Well, what are some things that you probably should like? Probably. Maybe feel like you should like. I feel like you have friends that really like it. Maybe, okay, what about this? Pickleballing. Do you feel left out because you don't put it?

SPEAKER_03

I feel a little left out because now because only because you play it.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh. I really suck at it.

SPEAKER_03

Before I knew it was a thing, and I'm like, why is everybody into this pickleball stuff? But then when you started playing it for fun, I'm like, maybe it, maybe I should be too.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm just talking about like trendy things. I feel like pickleballing is trendy. Playing mahjong, that is now again trendy.

Pickleball, Mahjong, And Closing Thanks

SPEAKER_01

People are doing that again.

SPEAKER_03

And they have these pretty little tiles now, like you get your own set or something.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like way out the loop. Me too. I feel like maybe I should be a mahjong girl, but I don't know. Do I want to?

SPEAKER_03

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Do I go down that road? I don't know. Anyway, what are some things that you think people like? You probably should, but should you normally it's not really no? I don't know. Let us know. Let us know in the comments. Let us know in the comments.
