One band can turn a regular memory into a landmark moment, and for us that band is Hanson. We start with the posters, the teen magazines, the VCR recordings, and the pure 90s devotion and then tell the story of a New Orleans concert trip that took us from “gym acquaintances” to real-deal friends. If you love nostalgic storytelling, 90s pop culture, and the kind of laughter that comes from remembering who you used to be, you’re in the right place.

From there, we widen the playlist fast. We get into boy bands and the classic debate: NSYNC or Backstreet Boys, plus the reunion-tour hopes we’re still holding onto. We also hit the Spice Girls era (yes, we assigned each other a Spice), talk Britney Spears and why she still feels like a pop queen, and shout out the vocal legends who defined 90s R&B: TLC, Mariah Carey, Tony Braxton, and Whitney Houston.

And because the 1990s were the age of genres, we don’t stop at pop. We talk 90s rock and grunge influences, dip into hip-hop, and end with 90s country music memories like Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and a vividly remembered CMA Awards night featuring Reba. When you’re done listening, we want to hear from you: what 90s songs instantly take you back?

Subscribe wherever you listen, leave a review, and share this with a friend who still knows every word to their favorite 90s hit. What’s the first 90s track you’d add to our playlist?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We were friends. We were like acquaintance friends because we had met at the gym. But it was this specific instance, this trip that we took that blew it all out of the water for us.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, this is my this is my person.

Why 90s Music Hits Different

SPEAKER_02

Okay, this month is filled with nostalgia. Yeah, and we're not just talking about old, old, we're talking about our nostalgia, what it was like when we were young in the 90s.

SPEAKER_00

In the 90s, it was the 90s.

SPEAKER_02

I love him.

SPEAKER_00

I love him too, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so this episode is all about 90s music. So I hope you stick around for it because it's gonna be quite interesting.

SPEAKER_00

I'm hoping that we can also touch on early 90s as well as late 90s because we are more of late 90s babies. Um we were 86, 86. 87. So late 90s, we were 10-ish. Okay. So this is really like when I remember the most culture from my childhood, is around that time. But like we had people weighing in. I had made a Facebook post like, tell me what do you think of when you think of the 90s? And there was lots of, of course, like music and culture and stuff like that. Um, so if we have to pull up a few references, uh, I'm gonna do that because I don't want to just touch on like boy bands. I want it to be more than that, but you know, that was that was our jam.

SPEAKER_02

That was a wonderful time to be alive.

Hanson Obsession And The Trip

SPEAKER_02

I think we have to open this episode with our favorite band. And the one that we really bonded over, we were friends. We were like acquaintance friends because we had met at the gym, but it was this specific instance, this trip that we took, that blew it all out of the water for us.

SPEAKER_00

I was like, this is my this is my person.

SPEAKER_02

And that was Hansen, and that was Hansen, the Hansen brothers. Um so back in the 90s, there was this uh boy group, but we didn't know, could be girls, it might be little girls, could be little girls. Could be little boys because they were so pretty, they had long hair, and their voices hadn't changed quite yet, except for Isaac.

SPEAKER_00

And that was debatable. Yeah, I feel like it got deeper later in life.

SPEAKER_02

It did. And um we I would love going to the grocery store and getting those bop magazines. Team beat. Team beat bop. Oh my, if if handsome was on the cover. And they always were.

SPEAKER_00

At that time, they always were. I'm looking through my mama's grocery shopping, and I'm like, and if it had if it you opened it up and it had a poster on both sides, you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_02

I didn't bring my hands and posters. You got some still? You know I do. You remember when we pulled them all out? Oh, I can't believe I didn't have a lot of things. We should have put them on the wall.

SPEAKER_00

Why we didn't think of that?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we can't think of it all. We open that when our brains are full of the colours. I still have all my hands and posters.

SPEAKER_00

I probably do too somewhere. I know my mama saved all that. And plastered all over my walls. Um You couldn't see the walls in my room.

SPEAKER_02

I had one wall that was Zack Hansen because he was my favorite Hanson.

SPEAKER_00

So you organized it by brother?

SPEAKER_02

Just that one was like my Zach Shrine. Everything else was just a mixture. And I also had like on my on my door, that was like the ones I liked, but they were less important. Yeah. Because Hansen was everything. Yeah. Um, that was like Backstreet Boys, 98 degrees.

SPEAKER_00

Just because they were trending at the time.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no authority was one of them. I can't think of a um, I don't know. I can't think of a song. I think I just thought the little boys were cute, I think.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Oh, no authority.

SPEAKER_02

I thought you said no authority. No authority. No authority. Do y'all know any no authority songs? Because I don't. I think I just thought one of them was cute and hung it up.

SPEAKER_00

That was probably their peak time. Yeah, that was being in Teen Magazine or whatever it was. But yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um, but you know, so we went on a trip. Um, I said, hey, I think we talked about how you liked Hansen. Would you like to come to New Orleans and see Hansen with us? And at the time she was the her kids were babies, like it was a baby. And you didn't really go a whole lot of places.

SPEAKER_00

Nope.

SPEAKER_02

But you said yes.

SPEAKER_00

So to go overnight with P two, it was you and Lainey. So like two late two girls I really barely knew, kind of from the gym. And but I just I was like, I'll do anything to go see Hansen. So here we go.

SPEAKER_02

It was quite magical, too.

SPEAKER_00

Such a magical night.

SPEAKER_02

Hansen, and I would tape every time they was on like Oprah or they was on like uh, I don't know, like some coverage.

SPEAKER_00

Good morning America, any little our talk show, Rosie O'Donnell show, the Ellen show, any show they was on, we was I was setting that that uh VCR to go off.

SPEAKER_02

Absolutely. Yeah, it I needed every one of them. And then when they came out with the uh VHS tape, Tulsa Tokyo in the middle of nowhere. Ward out. Probably still have it. I know I still have it. I could get it for you right now. Dang it, why I didn't bring all that stuff or yellow. Um it wasn't orange, it was black. Okay, the the like cover was black. That's it was yeah, and it just had a bunch of pictures of them one. Okay, and it had the Hansen symbol.

SPEAKER_00

I'm thinking of Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But the Hansen symbol was orange. Okay, that's what I'm thinking of. Yeah, yeah. Great times. Great times. And then

Boy Bands Rivalries And Reunion Dreams

SPEAKER_00

after Hansen came the boy, the other boy bands. Okay, like I was always an in sync over backstreet boys girl.

SPEAKER_02

And I was a backstreet boys girl. 100%.

SPEAKER_00

Tisk Tisk.

SPEAKER_02

I did see InSync in concert.

SPEAKER_00

I never did, I never got to or BSB, but I want to go to Vegas and see BSB.

SPEAKER_02

I'll go with you. You just say when. You just say when. And I will hop on a plane and go to Las Vegas where I did not have a dream in the heart. I don't have a single care to go to Las Vegas. Not even, but I will go. I will go to Las Vegas for Backstreet Boys. And I've seen them. I saw, okay, so InSync, the the concert that I saw was whenever they was flying.

SPEAKER_00

Sally. That's an old one. That was one of their first.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Santa Claus got me the tickets.

SPEAKER_00

Santa Claus wasn't good to you that even. Santa Claus. No, but Santa Claus one year when Hansen came out with their Snowed In album, got me Snowden, got me middle of nowhere, got me a portable Walkman CD player. That was my favorite Christmas to this day. I never remember that Christmas. So that was so special.

SPEAKER_02

That was the first CD I got when we got our first CD player. Snowed in? Was Snowden. My mom and them got a CD player at the auction, at an auction.

SPEAKER_00

This is where you get your love of auction.

SPEAKER_02

This is where I get my love, love of auction items, I guess. And they um and they bought me that CD and surprised me with it. And I will never forget that moment.

SPEAKER_00

I know. It's ingrained.

SPEAKER_02

It's just such such good memories, you know. Um, and then Backstreet Boys, I saw later on in my life, like I was probably 27, 30. They came to Lafayette. It was amazing.

SPEAKER_00

It was amazing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But I'll tell I'll go with you.

SPEAKER_00

I would love to. Just yeah. We'll we'll see if we can make that happen.

SPEAKER_02

One day.

SPEAKER_00

One day.

SPEAKER_02

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_00

In sync won't do a tour. Well, they'll have to do it without JT because he's too big. He's too he don't wanna? Uh-uh. What's wrong with him? He thinks he's he thinks his, you know what, don't smell don't smell. Well, he married Jessica Beale. I mean, how they they they got to have a boring life, huh? I would think. That's boring. No kids. Yeah, they have kids. No, they don't. He has a son for sure that I know of. Look it up. I'm gonna look it up right now.

SPEAKER_02

They do not have any children. I'm telling you. He got a kid. Jessica Beale had a kid.

SPEAKER_00

Does Justin Timberlake have a child? Look, does Justin Timberlake have Lyme disease? They have two kids. Who knew? Two sons. Silas and Phineas.

unknown

God.

SPEAKER_00

Phineas and Ferb. Wasn't that a cartoon?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Are you serious right now? Why did I miss that? Oh well. Guess he's not as big as he thought. Guess not. Well. But I still love him.

SPEAKER_00

I would just love for them to do a reunion tour. But remember when the trolls.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I thought they was gonna do that.

SPEAKER_00

I was ready, yeah. Oh, I was ready. I was brushing up on all my in sync, and I'm like, when these tickets drop, I don't care if I gotta pay a thousand dollars. Thousand dollars. Well, I probably would get in.

SPEAKER_02

In sync, get ready. She's ready to pay a thousand dollars. And if she's ready to pay a thousand dollars, then so many other people would be.

SPEAKER_00

Flip a lid.

SPEAKER_02

We'd have to sell a lot of makeup for that.

SPEAKER_00

If JT was in it, but if he wasn't in it six months.

SPEAKER_02

Man, when they came out with that second trolls movie, or which one was it? The third one. I don't know. They did another one and all the in sync were in it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that was the one. Yeah. And I and they teased about the tour and all about it.

SPEAKER_02

And I was like, oh my gosh. Yes. I'm gonna take cat litter commercial side. They don't like money. They don't like money.

SPEAKER_00

He does. He's doing whatever it takes to have.

SPEAKER_02

I'll be on a kitty litter commercial tomorrow. It's gonna bring me dollar books. And then we can we're gonna take my kitty litter money and then we're gonna go to uh backstory boys.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's do that. Okay. Let's do that.

SPEAKER_02

Anybody want to put us in a kitty litter commercial? Even though neither one of us have cat pets. It just needs to cover our flights, hotel, and our BSB tickets.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, please.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, but let's talk about some other music.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes, yes. We're losing people now, I think.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, we talked about 20 minutes on enhancing and just two of the meetings. That was our our What about

Spice Girls Britney And 90s Pop

SPEAKER_02

the Spice Girls though?

SPEAKER_00

I got into them a little bit, but not a lot because I knew my mama wouldn't approve. Yeah. Well, they talk, if you want to be my lover. She was gonna be like, You ain't having no lover, you six years old. Or not six, but ten years old. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, we were all about it. When I had birthday parties, all my friends would come over and we would be the spice girls. And can you guess which one I was?

SPEAKER_00

Baby.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

You had blonde hair.

SPEAKER_02

Sporty. Sporty! That was my favorite one.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She was a little cray cray.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. But if you were my friend, then do you know which spice girl I'd have chosen for you?

SPEAKER_00

Me?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The male anyone.

SPEAKER_02

Scary. Yeah. Because you got the curly hair.

SPEAKER_00

Just because I have the curly hair, I'm not scary, huh?

SPEAKER_02

Sometimes. No, you're not scary at all.

SPEAKER_00

I ain't scared of you. Okay, and then we had um, let's see.

SPEAKER_02

Brittany Spears. Hello, Queen.

SPEAKER_00

She's still relevant to this day. My my 11-year-old loves her, but we skip a lot of songs when it comes on. We skip quite a bit of her later stuff. Um, but she loves her. Got a poster and got the shirts and everything. I'm like, I feel like it's all coming back around. Now they don't know how she is today. I shield her from that. Yeah. Protect her from I I want her to still think Britney is thriving. A queen.

SPEAKER_02

But she's the queen that she is.

SPEAKER_00

The queen that she is.

SPEAKER_02

She is a queen. I don't I do I do love Brittany. I'm not like obsessed with her though. Like some people. But I do love her and respect her, and I I hope the best for Britt. Um, we also have um Destiny's Child.

SPEAKER_00

Never got into them. I mean, I liked the music, but I was not a like fan. You know.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like though, I had okay, so my little cousin Emily loved like RB. And um, so I would go and I'd listen with her and we'd play Destiny Destiny's Child. Um, but I feel like we equally liked all of them, not just Beyonce. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

As a group, they were great.

SPEAKER_02

They were great and catchy.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so um I'm going to sing some songs and I'm going to have you have anything else you want to say on

Rock Rap And Genre-Hopping Playlists

SPEAKER_02

the topic.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, there's so there's so many. Like what we haven't even touched like 90s um rock. Correct. Matchbox 20.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I loved them.

SPEAKER_00

Um, who what else? Some ones that I know the song Pearl Jam. Uh Red Hot Chili Peppers. There's a whole genre, like 90s and 2000s rock. Um, I mean, listen to the planet. That is my I love all of it.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. And gangster rap.

SPEAKER_00

That was I didn't get into that until later in my teen twenties. Right.

SPEAKER_02

But but you were listening to 90s.

SPEAKER_00

But I was listening to 90s, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so I feel and the whole grunge scene, like I feel like that was just the age of genres. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but I just feel like that's why our playlists look so diverse. Like my my husband can be listening to Sammy Kershaw one second, and then the next second we listen into uh, you know, big 90s country.

SPEAKER_00

You see, like we could be here for we could have done a whole episode on pop, RB, rock, and country. Four whole episodes.

SPEAKER_02

Who's your favorite country

Name That Song And 90s Classics

SPEAKER_02

singer of the 90s?

SPEAKER_00

Oh man.

SPEAKER_02

I remember.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know that I have a favorite. Uh I liked all the girls like um Martina McBride. No, um, yeah, probably. I didn't like it. Faith Hill, Martina, uh, Leanne Rhimes, um Dina Carter. Like just yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Strawberry wine. 17. A hot July moon. Saw everything.

SPEAKER_00

Now, what were we running around the house? Again, my mama, when she heard, I and listen, it came on the radio and I was singing all the words. She said, How do you know this song? And I was like, and uh, she's like, Do you know what they're talking about? I said, I was like, strawberry wine, mom.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't know what I was singing, and strawberry wine, like it never even crossed my mind. It was like they got drunk, yeah, they did the deed, like none of that crossed my mind.

SPEAKER_00

You know, until I was like I was just like, oh, what a beautiful love song. Like she fell in love with this boy, and they drank strawberry wine in the field. Sounded really fun, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Who knew? I wasn't paying attention. No, I didn't know. I was just singing a song. Uh so I Faith Hill was a big one for me. I loved Faith Hill.

SPEAKER_00

Um, and uh I loved my brother had uh Sammy Kershaw, a Sammy Kershaw CD, and that was probably my first country music experience when I would listen to Sammy Kershaw with him. Never knew he grew up, he was from the town right next to me. Yeah in Capitol.

SPEAKER_02

Could have literally seen him in a country.

SPEAKER_00

Could I literally, yeah. So um, but yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I still haven't seen him to this day, and it is on my bucket list as soon as I'm gonna do it. To run into him somewhere. No, I want to see him.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, in concert. In concert. Oh, we're gonna make that happen.

SPEAKER_02

Sammy Kershaw. Yes. Um, but uh okay, so let's do it. Okay. All right, I'm gonna sing some things. Okay who sang it. All right. Okay. And it's a bit uh sweet symphony. Yeah, you're so good. Yeah. I would have never guessed that. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Um what is a verve, anyway? I don't know what that word means.

SPEAKER_02

It's a skateboard and pipe.

SPEAKER_00

You knew that?

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, that would make sense.

SPEAKER_02

Is it look like a guy that would know that would know?

SPEAKER_00

What? Look, I'm gonna do it again.

SPEAKER_02

What is a verve? It might be some kind of drug paraphernalia for all we know. For all. Because there was two. There was the verve and there was the verve pipe.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, yeah. Verve is a noun that means great energy, enthusiasm, or vigor, especially in artistic, creative, or intellectual expressions. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I like it. Bittersweet symphony that associates with do you know the movie?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and that's a one another one like I probably shouldn't have watched, but it's one of my favorites, though.

SPEAKER_02

I loved that. Loved it. I hated the way it's Sarah Michelle Geller and Ryan Felipe. Yeah, I know Freddie Prince Jr. I about lost it whenever I saw what he looks like now. No offense, Freddie. Because I know you're listening.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, he's listening right now. He's aging without work. And that's what we look like when we age without work. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

No, which is nice. But um, yeah, okay, so um, all right, let's do this. Um, okay. I don't want no scrub. Scrub is not gonna get no love from me. Who is it? TLC. Okay. Um sweet, sweet Vanna Sipp. Mariah Carey. Okay. Um there's there was one. Um Brigma Tony Braxton. You knew Tony Braxton. Say you love me again.

SPEAKER_00

Undo this hurt, you cause when you walk through the door and walk down on the left. She got she got the that voice that really just feel it all the way to you. Oh, you felt it to your toes.

SPEAKER_02

Oh my goodness, she's good. Um, okay. Um, and then uh oh god, there's another TLC one.

SPEAKER_00

You're doing a great job, friend. Oh, okay, good. Thanks.

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Oh, do you know it was I don't know if I'm gonna try. Okay, say the words I will always love you by Whitney Hewson.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, that was a Dolly Parton song.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but who did it better?

SPEAKER_00

Whitney did it better. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I look, I had Lila listen one time. I was like, okay, we love Dolly.

SPEAKER_00

We do.

SPEAKER_02

We love Dolly with everything. In our hearts, I love Dolly Parton. Um, but when we're talking about I will always love you, it's Whitney.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Whitney killed that song. So good. Alright, I didn't even hip hop. Okay, uh California love. Do you know who sang that? Nate Dog and somebody else. Tupac.

SPEAKER_00

Tupac and Nate Dog and uh and Dr. Dre. No, my bad.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, we didn't they didn't even tell me about country.

90s Country Memories And CMA Night

SPEAKER_02

They didn't even tell me about country here.

SPEAKER_00

Well, redo it because I need some we need some country too.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, country. I should know this because that's all I listen to. Country music from the 90s. Okay, so we got what are the best country music from the 90s? Come on. Like oh, Garth Brooks.

SPEAKER_00

Um, I was not a big Garth fan until later in life, honestly.

SPEAKER_02

Did you watch all the award shows?

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_02

You didn't? I remember specifically watching um like the CMA Awards and um and sitting down in front of TV with a TV tray in front of the console TV, watching Reba McIntyre with that red dress slit all the way down to her navel, and my mama was losing her mind over it. Not that it was pretty, that it was way too risky.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely.

SPEAKER_02

And Um, and I had a big plate of round steak and rice and gravy with some sweet peas. I will never forget that day.

SPEAKER_00

Locked in your memory. Yep. Wow.

SPEAKER_02

She was fancy that day. She was fancy.

SPEAKER_00

Shania Twain was big on my uh oh, that's one that I did have her CDs. I did like Shania Twain. Yeah. Um, she was just like real fun and sassy and you know, kind of natural, you know, like didn't need a whole lot of glitz and glamour.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, now I don't care for Martina McBride. Um, I have to bring that up. I don't know what about her makes me mad. My Aunt Mel loves Martina. She even had a dog named Martina. Oh goodness. And you know, she has a beautiful voice, yes. Yeah. Um, but I the I just couldn't get past the short hair.

unknown

I don't know why.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know why.

SPEAKER_00

I drew the line for you. Yeah. She didn't look. I mean, we used to like 90s country, like, think about um the Juds and like um even Dolly, like just big hair. Reba had the big T's hair. They all had the big T's hair. Here come Martina and her little Bob.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I just it it pissed me off to know Angels.

SPEAKER_00

Wow.

SPEAKER_02

But if Independence Day comes on, I'm still like, it's Independence Day. Roll the stone away. Oh yeah. Uh but Faith Hill, uh, Dixie Chicks are from the nineties.

SPEAKER_00

Late late 90s, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, I'm sorry, the chicks. The chicks now. Yeah, the chicks.

SPEAKER_00

They have they they got to be to be very political.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and it wasn't fun. They weren't fun after a little while, even though their harmonizing was on point. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Um, but yeah. Okay, those are fun. That's fun.

SPEAKER_02

My cousin was in love with John Michael Montgomery. One time we wrote him a letter. Yeah. Because she was in love with him.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my.

SPEAKER_02

And so John Michael Montgomery. How's that song go?

SPEAKER_00

You know, for the longest time I thought that was a Garth Brooks song. I just thought that in his voice that was Garth Brooks, and then I found out it wasn't, and I'm like, oh okay. I do know that.

SPEAKER_02

We had to have that too. Oh, yeah, Mama Mom would buy my book.

So yeah, let us know. I know we didn't even brush the surface of 90s music. But y'all give us y'all favorites and uh we'd love to see what y'all what y'all enjoy listening to.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and strike up some memories for not only us, but for y'all too, for those watching and reading the comments.

SPEAKER_02

That's right. All right, y'all. Thank y'all so much. A big thanks uh to our sponsor, Sterling Automotive Group.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yes. If you've been thinking about getting a new rod, you know, maybe it's time to trade in that old that hoopty. Um, check out Sterling Automotive Group. They have so many brands represented: Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, uh, Kia. And there's multiple locations too. So there's probably one near you if you're in this southwest Louisiana area. And it's probably not, it's probably going to be worth your time if you're within the vicinity to take a drive to come and save with Sterling. Um, in fact, save at Sterling.com is their website.

SPEAKER_02

And you can see everything that they have to offer there. Pre-owned, new, the world is your oyster.

SPEAKER_00

They can help you with financing too. Uh, service and parts. Just give them, give them a look, a looky loo. And we think. Thank you so much, Sterling Automotive Group, for being our sponsor. And we're gonna see y'all next week. Bye, y'all. Bye.
