But her path to where she is now wound through North London, a Scottish university, the post office, a busy M6 service station, seven years behind the bar at Bootleggers in Kendal, and nearly a decade at Mardix, a Cumbrian manufacturer whose workforce grew from 119 to nearly 800 during her time there.

We walked from Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater along the River Brathay in the Lake District, a flat, accessible, gorgeous riverside stroll that starts (and ends) near Chesters, beloved by walkers and pastry enthusiasts alike. With waterfalls, lake views, and autumn colour all around us, it was a gorgeous setting for a beautiful conversation.
