Why Grieving Feels Harder Today: The Loss of Ritual and How to Heal
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Grief feels heavier today—and it’s not just because loss is painful.
In this episode, we explore how the loss of ritual in modern life has made grieving harder, lonelier, and more confusing than it used to be. For centuries, religion and culture provided structured grief rituals—like funerals, shiva, memorials, prayer, and communal mourning—that helped people process loss in a contained, supported way.
Today, more people identify as non-religious, and many of those rituals have quietly disappeared. What’s left is unstructured grief that often has nowhere to go.
As a therapist, I see this show up in clients who struggle to let go of losses such as:
- The death of a loved one
- The loss of a pet
- Breakups and unresolved relationships
- Life transitions and unacknowledged grief
In this episode, we talk about why grief becomes overwhelming without a container—and why creating personal rituals can be one of the most effective tools for healing.
You’ll learn how intentional rituals—like writing a letter and releasing it, honoring anniversaries, or creating space to remember—help the nervous system process loss, create emotional boundaries, and allow you to move forward without forgetting.
This episode is for anyone who feels stuck in grief, unsure how to let go, or wondering why loss still feels so raw years later.
