Embracing the Spring Equinox: Why January 1st Isn't the Real New Year
The modern world has conditioned us to believe that January 1st is when we should launch into ambitious resolutions and dramatic lifestyle changes, yet when we examine ancient wisdom and our own bodies, we discover a profound truth: the Spring Equinox represents our true energetic new year.
Lizzy and Nikki reveal why those first three months of hibernation aren't a failure of willpower but rather perfect alignment with Earth's natural cycles. Drawing from Ayurvedic traditions and astronomical reality, they explain how winter months are biologically programmed for rest, reflection, and integration — not for pushing against our nature with intense new habits that often lead to burnout and discouragement.
The podcast explores how the Spring Equinox coincides perfectly with Aries season, the first sign of the zodiac that brings cosmic support for action, innovation, and bold new beginnings. This powerful alignment creates the perfect conditions for manifesting goals with less resistance and more flow. Rather than swimming upstream against natural energies in January, the equinox offers a supported runway for takeoff.
For those feeling guilty about abandoned New Year's resolutions or sluggish winter energy, this episode provides both scientific validation and practical guidance. Nikki and Lizzy share how to harness this powerful transition through reevaluating intentions, embracing physical movement that opens energetic pathways, and recognizing the "downloads" or persistent ideas that arrive during this season of innovation.
What would happen if we stopped fighting against our natural rhythms and instead aligned our ambitions with cosmic timing? Listen as we explore how motherhood, ancient wisdom, and astronomical cycles all point to the same conclusion: you weren't failing in January — you were simply waiting for nature's true new beginning.

Speaker 2:Join us weekly on the Modern Zen Collective podcast and elevate your mind, body and spirit. And now on to today's episode. Hello friends, welcome to another episode of the Modern Zen Collective Podcast. Your hosts, lizzie and Nikki, here today for an episode all about the spring equinox and the upcoming Aries season and why, if you have been lagging these past three months, it is perfectly acceptable and there is a perfectly wonderful and scientific explanation why you were not ready to start the new year on January 1st, why society tells you to start it and why the actual new year is the spring equinox, march 21st, coming up here in a few days.
Speaker 2:So, nikki, I know we're about to blow everyone's minds with this episode, I know it, but I really I think it's time that we shared that. When you have those hard starts to the year, like I've had the past three or four years, I would say, probably since I got pregnant with Jackson, so at least three years, maybe a little bit before that, this is how I feel. I think once you kind of step into this motherhood, you almost reconnect with earth and the mother earth and the natural cycles again.
Speaker 2:So it was almost like a reconnection piece to where January 1st. I am still hibernating.
Speaker 1:I don't want to see anyone.
Speaker 2:I don't want to do anything. I'm really. It's still cold outside. I want to be home with my family, still celebrating, still being cozy, still just kind of like resting. And it's been really hard for me to kick off the new year and I've always kind of wondered why I haven't been feeling like it, you know, in quotation air quotes here, feeling like it, you know, and starting those first of all, even reflecting on my year. You know, I used to be, I used to be obsessed with John Maxwell, darren Hardy.
Speaker 2:Jim Rohn all these high productivity with.
Speaker 1:John.
Speaker 2:Maxwell, Darren, Hardy, Jim Rohn, all these high productivity, successful, you know, efficiency people where you take a full day to review your past year, all of your calendars, everything you did every single day, all of the projects, everywhere you went, everyone you met with every single thing. And I used to do that.
Speaker 1:How masculine is that?
Speaker 2:I know for a whole day and I would review everything, every single thing, and I used to do that and I would review everything I know for a whole day and I would review everything, every single thing, and I was like, what did I do this year? I need to see everything and I need to remember everything. And now let's plan for this next year. And I haven't done that and I can't even remember the last time. I did it, honestly, and I really feel like it's because, stepping into that motherhood, this new season, it's forced me into the reconnection with this cyclical energy aspect that I hadn't really connected with. Where the spring equinox and that's really when I start to feel movement again, when the spring, when the warmth starts to come, it's not in the dead of winter on January 1st. So I know this is something that you've learned a lot about. Can you share a little bit about why, like why, is January 1st not the real new year? Why am I speaking the truth here and not everybody else on earth? Why am I?
Speaker 3:speaking the truth here and not everybody else on earth. Yeah Well, when we look at even the ancient Veda texts and Ayurveda and looking at the different seasons that we have as well, when we are in the depth of winter going into, you know, january, february and even March, that's meant to be our hearty foods, our rest and digest like a bear. It's meant for us to just wind down, let our body recoup from anything that it did, start to plant seeds to see, grow and evolve as we move throughout the year. But we can go down different conspiracy rabbit holes about how the whole calendar has been changed, that we're not in a rhythm with the moon and the seasons, and the way that the actual energy and the weather goes, and how that kind of helps our cellular function and helps everything in terms of us to grow and evolve, like we get more sun, obviously in the summer, and our vitamin D, etc. So the true new year starts, slowly starts. It's not like ripping off a Band-Aid Also, which is man-made, that we're expected to, you know, enjoy New Year's Eve, whether you drink or don't drink, and then on New Year's Day, you're expected to be at the gym. Start. Your green juice do your, you know, dry January, do all of these things right and just like, go full throttle. You're like a salmon swimming upstream, going against the natural energies that are with you. Yes, if you did that in June, july, you'd probably get pretty far, because that would be the apex of the sun in the middle of the summer, in the middle of the season, and during the summer, like that during the summer solstice, you have so much energy behind you to help you.
Speaker 3:So this January 1st idea is like you were saying, lizzie, is a very masculine understanding that doesn't go in line with the flow of Mother Gaia and how we're actually expected to be expected to be. And also, you know, we're expected to go, go, go, do, do, do 365 days out of the year. And they're actually, you know, when we actually look at those that are more connected to the earth. We understand that farmers have seasons. We understand that you know weather and changing for the trees and the leaves and the birds and everything has seasons. Yet we're the we've decided to go against those seasons. So we decided to do the exact same thing every day for 365 days and we want to start all that January 1st.
Speaker 3:It's just really sets us up to have exhaustion, to create more stress in our body, which stress, you know, contributes to a multitude of diseases that can manifest inside our body. So here we are, thinking that you know, the Western world's telling us January 1st this is when you start your health journey. You do this, you do that, etc. Actually, when you do that, at that time you're putting more stress on your body to create more disease, which is nuts Like. When you actually go in line with the way that the flow of the energy is asking you to and you go with the wind and you go with the waves, you have so much more energy and you're taking care of yourself so much more and you're so interconnected with Mother Gaia to support you.
Speaker 3:So this time of the entire winter season but this time of January to March is meant to be rest and digest, is meant to be hibernation is meant to be, and this is for us in the Northern Hemisphere.
Speaker 3:Of course it's different for those of our friends that might be listening in the Southern Hemisphere, but for us, during this wintertime, this time is meant for us to have heartier foods, it's meant for us to slow down, it's meant for us to take pauses and breaks, it's meant for us to sleep more and to rest more because the sun is not as prominent during the day. So when the sun is during a much smaller window, our bodies are meant to reflect that and have more rest and more sleep to digest to prepare us for the busy season when the sun's out for 15 hours, 16 hours. So it's very interesting and I can go down the rabbit hole of a lot of this of how the calendar has been constructed to keep us sick. But yeah, it's really. There's a lot of energy behind the start of March 21st, that time for us to really catapult forward and to honor our body, whether you know wherever you are, and not push yourself.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you know, I think also having my children in November they were both born in November also added to kind of the my body forcing me, you know, into this rest, digest, you know, recharge phase during the winter months as well, but it and also like having stepping through that portal to the other side. It's such a big transition in your life that it also, you know, calls for that time of reflection on your life and what it was like before you had children, you know, to getting pregnant, to like now giving birth, and so I think almost the way that I had my children also allowed me to lean more into those winter months, that time of, you know, spiritual integration, you know, really paying attention to what's going on with myself and how I choose to spend my time and my energy. I think that's a big thing. Once you have less of it, it almost, it definitely becomes more precious and you get more picky with it and I often think, like, what did I do with all the time that I had before?
Speaker 2:It's so crazy, yeah. And so I think it's almost like this thing when we get a little bit more slowed down, when we have life situations and life events that force us into slowing down, it's almost like we've gone too far.
Speaker 2:Hopefully it's not an injury or a sickness or an ailment or something, but rather something beautiful like a birth or something that allows you to have that moment of you know, break and solitude and a moment to reflect and re-integrate with the natural cycle. But it's like when you force it in January, like Nikki was saying, you can really set yourself up to be burnt out and it could be six months, it could be eight months, it could be the whole year, it could be next year, you could compound all of it and burn out in five years and have something really, really bad happen you know to you.
Speaker 2:So we're not saying that you shouldn't have your goals and your inspirations and all of these things, but maybe next year try not forcing yourself to do it in the beginning of the year but allowing yourself to wait until the spring equinox, or even this year, if you did do the January 1st New Year's resolutions and you did get on the wagon with all these wonderful new habits and things that you're trying to integrate into your life. Maybe take a moment now to reflect on how have those gone? How have? How have you felt when you've thought about doing the actions? So, before you do them, how have you felt doing the actions? How have you felt after doing the actions? Have you been able to stay consistent to what you promised yourself? You would be consistent in the beginning. Have you negotiated to a different level of insistency and then have you stayed with that?
Speaker 2:You know where are you at with those things that you decided to implement on the first, and this would be a good time right now to really reevaluate those and say are these things really important to me? And if they are, let's do it. We've had three months to see what works and what doesn't. How can I tweak this to make it better for me and able to work with my life and how it is in this moment. Are there some things that I need to let go of? Are there some things that I need to focus more on? Can I simplify these down so I only have a few things that I'm doing, so that way I'm not having to spread my energy and my willpower too thin? Is there a way to do this without using willpower?
Speaker 2:So I think, like all of that, you get to use the momentum. You get to use the cosmic and the earthly energies that are happening right now on the spring equinox, to help you do all these things that you want to do. So I think that's all we're saying. Is that on the first of the year, it's wonderful that you have all these things. Are you going against the grain? Is it worth it to fight so hard at this moment to do these things, or can you actually allow yourself to rest a little bit longer, a little bit more, spend a little bit more time with yourself and with your loved ones, and then, like, take that ramp up. Like Nikki's saying, you don't just hit the ground running on the spring Equinox, on the 21st, you ramp up and you start that now, and I think you'd be surprised at how much easier it is, how much better it feels and how much more quickly things happen for you. I mean, what do you think and feel about that when I say that, nikki?
Speaker 3:Yeah, well, it makes me think of this time of January to March as being a time to listen to yourself and have the reflection and integration, and it makes me think of that quote that says music is only music with the space between the notes. We need the rest to be able to have our manifestations come in, or to open ourselves up for guidance and to listen and to not fill so much time up with excess because we think it productivity equals, you know, success. So it really, you know, having that time from January to March, like if you're doing things great, like yeah, we're not saying don't, don't do things like yes, do what you need to March. Like if you're doing things great, like yeah, we're not saying don't, don't do. Things like yes, do what you need to do, do what feels right in your heart. We're just saying don't push yourself to feel like it's a constant struggle to move the needle forward with something that you may have wrote down January 1st that you needed to accomplish, and give yourself grace, because when you have this time, you're really conserving your energy for these times when the sun is backing us and we have the energy to be more active, whether that be physically active or emotionally active or just different ways, that our mind's more active, etc. So having that time to rest really helps our body to prepare for the season of more go, go, go and more of seeing the seeds that you planted start to flourish.
Speaker 3:And you know something else that I don't know. If I don't know, it's interesting because you don't think about it that often. But Aries actually starts on the equinox, so the first zodiac sign starts on March. 21st to the year is this day in March, like the slow and steady start to start to even. You can see it in nature like the slow. You start to hear the birds, you start to see little. You know, florals start to bloom, you start to see leaves come back. You just start to see little. Things happen slowly and that's what we're saying slowly.
Speaker 3:But it's really fascinating when you look at these different areas and you see, oh yeah, also Aries, the first zodiac sign, which is, you know, action, drive and passion, starts on the equinox. It doesn't start in January or December into January. So it's very fascinating to see it from that perspective as well. And then, to, you know, look at what it looks like in terms of the Aries energy to back us as we're moving forward and doing the things that we, you know, want to do, which affects all of us. It doesn't just affect, you know, anyone who's an Aries or has Aries in their chart. It affects all of us because that's the season that we're in.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think it's so interesting because, stepping into that first sign of the zodiac on the spring equinox, it kind of brings those things together, like the cosmic energies and the earthly seasons I think we think of as like an earth thing, not as like a cosmic thing, almost like they're two separate things, even though they're not, but almost bringing those together. And it's like this Aries season it's let's go, but almost bringing those together. And it's like this Aries season it's let's go, let's do all these things, let's take the action. But if you didn't have that time before to really rest and reflect to see, do I still want the same things that I wanted last year, like, am I still moving towards the same target or have my circumstances changed? Have my experiences led me to new beliefs? Have I met new people that I want to spend more time with, or other people I want to spend less time with, or are there things that are more important to me now? Have my priorities changed? Because those change. They might change every few months.
Speaker 2:It might not be a whole year before you need to reevaluate, but it's like if you did not take the time to reevaluate and you're about to step into this season, that's going to carry all of your actions Like. It's like this big momentum push behind your actions, Like if you're taking steps towards something that you no longer want, you could be manifesting this life that isn't actually one that you desire at the end of the day. So if you don't take the time to have a beat and just check back in and say, is this still what I want, then when you step into this area season, that's shifting you into this, stepping into your personal power and your action and moving forward with all of these things, like you know, you're not going to be moving towards the destination that you want to be in. So I think that's also the importance of the resting part, the hibernation. It's not just for the body, it's so that you can take a moment to redirect your arrow, like, where are you moving? Because all these small steps, these seemingly insignificant things that you're doing now, are going to take you somewhere and they're all going to add up to this thing. And if you didn't reevaluate now, five degrees off from here looks totally different than what five degrees off from here looks like in December. You know that five degrees has become 50 degrees.
Speaker 2:So I think it's really making sure that you are checking back in with yourself and allowing yourself to be flexible, like if you want to let some dreams go that you've had for a really long time and you're feeling some sort of way about it, like, allow yourself to feel that way, but know that it's okay to change your mind, it's okay to be flexible, it's okay Like that's the wonderful thing about being human is that we only know what we know, and so when we learn new things, when we experience new things, when we meet new people, like what we know expands, and so it makes sense that what we believe and what we think and how we feel will expand.
Speaker 2:So just let yourself, let yourself like, don't feel like you have to be stuck into who you are, because that's how you feel, like people know you. It's okay to change. It's actually what we're meant to do. We're meant to change, we're meant to evolve, we're meant to be a new version of ourselves, hopefully better, hopefully towards that highest timeline and not away. But that's not always the case. We're human as well.
Speaker 3:We make mistakes, so we do take steps back, yeah, and any mistake is something that helps us to grow too. It helps us to heal our soul and grow in that way too. And when we move into this Aries energy, it's you know, it's asking you to step into your personal power and, you know, letting the energy move through you. But Aries is also about bold decisions, about you know, innovation, about invention, about new ideas and things. So you know, if you took this time to rest or even if you didn't and we're moving into Aries season whether or not you have Aries in your chart at all when you start to have these ideas or downloads we call them sometimes or pings or you know ideas for a new business or a new, you know way of doing things, or a new invention like notate it, start it You'll have the energy behind you, and even more so the energy as we start to ramp up into June. But this Aries energy is going to really give a lot of insights into your personal purpose and we're really moving into that with Neptune going into Aries too, which you can look online. We'll link a video about that too. It's not us talking, but we'll link a video about Neptune going into Aries and how we were really big into the spiritual side for a really long time and that's now ingrained in us and that's now part of our foundation. So we're using that to move into Aries season and we went from Pisces to Aries. We're moving into Aries season, which is now going to be the innovation, the, you know, trailblazing, the ideas that come out of nowhere that help you know, help humanity and help the world and help people, help everything Right. So when you have this new energy behind you, this time, especially in 2025 in Aries is really giving you the backing and energy to step into what you feel in your soul is your passion, your purpose or your path to get there, even if you don't know what it is, just following the breadcrumbs and following the pings to, you know, start to do what it is that you feel passionate about doing.
Speaker 3:And this could be also times for you know, changes. Like Lizzie was saying, you know something you had on your vision board for a long time. You might not want it anymore and that's totally normal. You know that's. That's just what happens as we're changing and evolving, and what you put on your vision board whenever it was your energy and who you were as a person is different than who you are now. So sometimes that evolves with us and sometimes we need to let it go. And letting something go could really be letting go something, tangibly, that you have and you know. It's not that you know it's time to part, or it can be something that was a dream that you know. Maybe down the road you'll come back to, but right now you know it's not feeding you energy, it's not giving you what you need at your core.
Speaker 3:So, using this Aries energy for your bold actions, your intentions, actions, your intentions, you know any new projects that you want to do, aligning with the energetic cycles, like we've talked about and doing. You know your movement, your embodiment, like you're starting to move into the season of the sun, giving you so much power. So you know, moving into a way of how are you moving your body, how are you moving your energy? Because we were you know, if we do the rest and digest time for Ayurveda. We were hibernating, we were relaxing, we were imagine, like you know curled up with a blanket and you're all curled up and your hands are together, and now we're moving into Aries, which is expansion, like you say in yoga, your shoulder blades are kissing, you're opening your chest. How can you move your body during this time to harness that energy? And when you do that, you most likely receive those downloads and more pings and things, because you're moving your energy around to be open to that as well.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so some specific practices that you can do to really harness this Aries energy and this fire and this power and this new project energy that's just riding F45. That's my favorite kind of workout. So I'm just starting back into the gym. I'm excited that this time of year is going to coincide with me stepping back into the gym, because I need all the help I can get, you know, moving back towards that healthy body that I would like to have post, you know, post-birth, postpartum, and then also, like what we were saying, it's a good time to start new projects and really move forward on some of the intentions that you've decided are important to you this year.
Speaker 2:So, really launching into those ideas, taking action on those things that you've been thinking about for a while, like, is there this idea that keeps popping up to you over and over and you're like man, it would be wonderful if someone did this. Well, what's to say that's not you? Or what's to say that you can't move that along to somebody else that you think would be a great person to take action on? That? It doesn't always have to be us.
Speaker 2:I think we've talked about this in other podcasts, but ideas often come to many different people as a way to help humanity, and then it's just one person. One person is going to take action on it and then the idea is going to go away. So it's kind of interesting how you know you're not going to be the only person and you might come up with someone in your mind that sounds like the perfect person for that idea. So pass it on or really just take some time to just take a risk, like what is something that has been scary to you, but something that has sounded absolutely wonderful, like it's an excited kind of scary. Maybe this is the time to do it.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yeah, we're with this Aries energy, especially with there's so much planetary activity happening right now. That's backing you to jump forward, and whenever you do something that might be a risk or might be something out of your comfort zone, not only are you helping your soul to grow and evolve and to step into the next version of you, you are also inspiring others to do the same, because they're seeing that you took this risk and they feel inspired, whether they tell you or not, to do something on their own as well. And as we move into this season, as we're continuing to grow and evolve with these planetary changes in 2025, et cetera, we're going to see more and more and more bold action taken and we're just going to see it pop up like candy everywhere Just people coming up with innovations and inventions and new ideas and challenging the norm and the status quo, et cetera. So, like Lizzie said, we used to say, it's you know, not you with something that you are considering doing or that pops in your head when you're in the shower and you just decide that this could be something really good.
Speaker 3:When I think of this energy you know it sounds really random, but I think of Suzy Batiste, who created Poo-Pourri and it just came to her out of nowhere and she was at a dinner party and she just thought of it. And here she created this entire empire from it, from one thought that she had. And then she just continued to travel and follow the thought and move and innovate and figure it out. And, like Lizzie said, that thought probably downloaded to 20 people, and 19 of them said that is a ridiculous thought, I'm not going to deal with that. That's weird, I'm not going to think about it. And Susie was thinking, okay, yeah, let's do it, let's tackle it. So it's, you know, this energy that we have and we have the free will and the discernment to decide what avenue we want to take with these, this bold action when we move forward.
Speaker 2:Yeah. So really, we're just trying to tell you don't feel bad if you didn't hop off your couch on January 1st and feel like doing all the things that you wanted to do, or even took the time to think about the things that you wanted to do yet, because you were just actually relaxing and leaning into the natural energy around you. So don't feel bad if you didn't, because we're about to step into the true new year, the energetic new year, the cosmic new year here on the 21st. So it's time for some new beginnings. It's time to trust in the natural cycle. It's time to ride the momentum and now rise with that Aries fire after these winter months of hibernation. So we're really excited to see where you guys go with the rest of the year.
Speaker 2:We would love to hear about, maybe, the idea or the thing that's really exciting, you to maybe take a risk on. I'm not sure what that thing is for me yet. I'm gonna have to think about that, but Nikki and I will share those once we have them. I don't know, nikki, do you have something that's been kind of nagging at you that you wanna take something on? Or is this something you have to think about too, because I feel like I need to think about that.
Speaker 3:Yeah, no, I have something, but I'm not going to share it because it's still in the incubation phase. So it's still inside of me and I want to get more energy behind it, to get my energy around it before I share it. But there's something that's been knocking on my internal door for three years. Just do it, do it. And it has to do with writing. So I love writing and it has to do with that. So there's something that I feel, the energy of the risk taking to move forward in that regard. But I still feel like I'm in that beginning.
Speaker 3:You know incubation stage as well, which also, you know, part of manifestation, when you feel, when you're just starting out and getting things going, don't feel bad if you keep things to yourself, because that helps to create your energetic container. So then you feel completely strong in your foundation, when all of these reflections around you come to you and say why would you do that? That's silly, that's stupid. And you have that complete foundation of being like well, yeah, I'm doing it because you've created your own foundation. So that's something that you know. Don't feel bad if you keep something to yourself. But for me, it has to do with writing and it's something that I'm definitely going to utilize this energy to start to move forward with.
Speaker 2:That's awesome. Okay, great. Well, we can't wait to hear about it later on. Exciting, exciting teaser. There we go.
Speaker 2:So thank you so much for joining us this year. You know, nikki and I have chatted and we typically do some sort of event virtual or in person around the equinox and the solstices. This year, with the way that our lives have currently been going, this is how we're going to share the spring equinox with you this year is through this podcast episode. So we're not going to be doing an in-person event this year, but look for us next year and then also, you know, the next one, look for the summer solstice. We like to do something together. We have a really cool actually we have a really cool thing that we're going to be doing this year on the summer solstice and a whole thing after. So we're not going to say too much about it, but we've really been working on this and we're really excited about it.
