When Roles Reverse - You Become the Parent ...And That's Okay!
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
There’s a moment in adulthood that no one really prepares you for.
It’s the moment you realize you’re becoming the one responsible for the people who once were responsible for you.
Maybe it starts small.
You’re helping them figure out technology.
You’re reminding them about appointments.
You’re noticing they need help with things they used to do easily.
And then one day you realize… the roles are slowly starting to reverse.
That realization can bring a lot of emotions.
Love.
Responsibility.
Worry.
Grief.
Sometimes all at once... and that's perfectly understandable.
This week I had one of those moments myself.
My family and I were getting a room ready for my father-in-law at an assisted living facility.
We were picking up a few pieces of furniture, figuring out what would make the space feel comfortable, grabbing some of the snacks and treats we know he likes.
Just little things that would make it feel less like a facility… and more like his space.
And somewhere between picking out a chair and deciding where pictures should go, I had this unexpected thought:
Why does this feel so familiar?
And then it hit me.
This feels exactly like when we helped our son move into his dorm room – that same mix of excitement and a little bit of a lump in your throat.
You’re setting up their space.
You’re making sure they have what they need.
You’re trying to make an unfamiliar place feel a little more like home.
You know it’s the right step.
But there’s also a quiet ache underneath it.
Because something about life has shifted… and that shift can bring a lot of feelings with it.
Today we’re talking about something that doesn’t get discussed nearly enough:
What it feels like when roles start to reverse in our families.
And if you're dealing with that right now, experiencing a wide range of emotions, please know that's completely okay.
