are we... getting fired?
Did ya miss us? We're back!
This week, Maddy and Jen tackle the dreaded “F” word—fired—and break down everything you need to know if you find yourself in this situation. Whether you’ve been let go, fear losing your job, or just want to be prepared, this episode is your survival guide.
5 Steps to Survive Getting Fired or Laid Off
Step 1: Give yourself time to process.
- Getting fired or laid off can be shocking and emotional. Resist the urge to immediately problem-solve or react impulsively.
- Take a day to sit with your emotions—whether that means venting to a friend, journaling, or practicing mindfulness.
Step 2: STEP AWAY FROM THE PHONE!
- Do not post about your firing on social media or badmouth your former employer.
- If you need to vent, do it in therapy, with trusted friends, or privately - writing and ripping.
Step 3: Get Closure & Reflect
- What can you learn from this?
- This is a time for problem-solving, not shame—figure out how to move forward with a positive mindset (or the best you can to be positive).
Step 4: Who are you?
- Many people tie their identity to their job. Take time to recognize that you are more than your career.
- Practice describing yourself by your values and interests, not just your profession.
Step 5: You got this! Get back out there!
- Set a realistic plan for job searching—don’t just scroll LinkedIn all day, everyday.
- Network! Reconnect with people in your industry, schedule coffee chats, and explore different paths.
- Give yourself permission to take a break—rest is part of the process.
And remember, losing a job sucks, but it’s not the end—it’s a redirection. Handle it with grace, take care of yourself, and trust that you will move forward.
