Does your clinic feel like you?

Jane.app Episode 8

This week on the podcast, we’re talking about how your workspace can do more than just function — it can actually feel like you.

Inspired by her chat with Meg and Neena from Articulate Design and Consulting,  Denzil dives into the intersection of design and identity. From personalizing your clinic with meaningful items to the magic of biophilic design, this episode is packed with ideas to help you create a space that’s both intentional and full of personality. Plus, Denzil shares the story behind the podcast’s unofficial mascot and why adding a little you to your surroundings can forge an instant connection.

What have you done to make your space uniquely yours? We’d love to hear about it! Send us an email and join the conversation.

Speaker 1:

Oh hi, it's me, denzel. Let's do a little exercise. Imagine your clinic. Picture yourself standing inside and now ask yourself honestly does it feel like you? This question popped into my head after chatting with Megan Nita from Articulate Design and Consulting. These two are truly a powerhouse combo. They're physical therapists who really get what clinics need, but they're also designers who believe your workplace should be a reflection of you. So why is this combination so important? Well, when you're in a space that feels like you, you tend to feel more comfortable and happy, and that good energy will trickle down to your patients.

Speaker 1:

In our recent episode of Radio Front Desk, meg and Nina took me on a journey on how you can create a space where function and personality meet, but I also wanted to share a few of my own ideas for bringing your personality into your space. Try adding something that's uniquely you. If you've been watching our Radio Front Desk episodes closely, you might have noticed a stuffed tiger lingering in the background. That little guy was something I brought in to calm my nerves when we first started recording. I don't know if you know this, but podcasting was brand new to me and it took some time to get used to. To me, this tiger is a simple personal reminder that I don't have to be anyone other than myself, even in a professional space. Plus, he's a great conversation starter and has now become our unofficial mascot in the podcast studio. As Meg and Nina pointed out to me. You are your brand, and this is true if you're a solo practitioner or part of a larger practice.

Speaker 1:

So try adding something personal to your clinic space, like a favorite piece of art, a trinket that reflects your hobby or maybe where you like to travel. From what I know, it can really help with building connections. Don't forget about function. If you do decide to bring in some personal items and trinkets, you can't just plop them down anywhere. Take a moment to really think about the best place to put these items. You probably didn't realize this, but each episode of Radio Front Desk, our producer Alex positions the tiger in a little bit of a different spot, and he points out to me where he puts it before we start recording, which I don't know if that sounds weird, but it's our little way of, you know, mixing it up and starting each episode with a little bit of delight. So we move the tiger, but where we move it is very intentional, and so one of the things that I learned from Meg and Nina is that your surroundings really do shape how you work. That's why they focus on intentionality when they're designing clinic spaces. They don't just want you to create a space that reflects you. They also want to create a space that works for you and when in doubt, let nature in.

Speaker 1:

Honestly, plants just make things feel homier, so why keep them confined to your home? Megan Nina introduced me to the concept of biophilic design Am I saying that right? Which basically translates to bringing nature into your space. I like this concept because it not only promotes well-being, it's also a great way to reflect a little more of who you are outside of work by bringing the things you love about nature into your work.

Speaker 1:

There are many different ways to do this. You can add some low-maintenance plants like snake plants or peace lilies to bring life into your space. Plus, they're basically impossible to kill, so you know bonus points. But you can also look at things that will make your space feel a little more cozy, like warm lighting or natural textures like wood and stone accents. Your space should tell your story, no matter what it is. So I'm curious what have you done to your space to make it truly feel like you. I'd love a little peek into your unique space, so shoot me a reply at frontdesk at janeapp. That's all for me. Thanks for listening and thanks for being you. You got this.
