Everyday Beans Podcast - Mostly About Coffee and Other Stuff
Savoring the Journey: Coffee & Life Reflections
In this heartfelt episode, I reflect on my coffee journey as I celebrate my daughter's birthday. I share how becoming a parent changed my perspective and motivated me to pursue my passion for coffee more seriously. I discuss the ups and downs of my coffee business journey, which began around the time my daughter was born, and how her simple phrase "turn that frown upside down" helps keep me grounded during challenging moments.
Throughout this episode, I dive into the importance of reflection, the joy of improving my coffee-making skills, and how sharing knowledge with fellow coffee enthusiasts creates a mutually beneficial relationship. Listeners will learn about the value of embracing your unique coffee journey, being open to continuous learning, and finding meaning in the process rather than focusing solely on the destination. This episode offers both practical coffee insights and life wisdom for anyone passionate about coffee or pursuing their dreams.

[00:00] We live. We live right now. Today is February 5th, 2025, and we're doing pretty good right now.
[00:14] I think we're doing pretty good right now. We've actually had this dog right here for a year. Today is about reflections.
[00:28] Today is a very special day. Today is my daughter's birthday.
[00:38] It seems like we've been having her birthday the whole month already. She's been out there doing her thing, pre-teens and all that. She's a handful. My son's a handful too.
[00:52] Wow. Looking at her each day, I'm like, wow. This is pretty cool. This is something that was created a while ago and has helped shape my life for the better.
[01:08] I do need to work on not trying to get everything from me because it is truly about them. So I've been better about that this past year or two. But it gives you a lot of pause, a lot of thinking time to just reflect. And I guess what I'm talking about right now is reflecting on my coffee journey.
[01:32] I started this whole coffee business thing probably about the time that she was born.
[01:42] Every year that goes by, I think about how further along I am in so many different ways. Personally, how am I personally? How am I growing? How has this coffee journey for me been?
[01:58] It's been good. Ups and downs, like everything. But I'm still with it. I had coffee at a date with a friend, a really good friend I met a long time ago, about seven, eight years ago. You mentioned you're still with coffee. You're still with coffee.
[02:20] I don't know if I ever really will give up coffee, just because I drink it every day. I love it. Business wise, I do like it. I do love it. I do think that we're on to something here. I know it's going to take some more time for me to truly share that. Get closer to you about the things that I'm doing. But I do like the fact that I am just a human.
[02:44] I've had a dream, and I'm tackling it each and every day. It's not easy. I only have a couple of people who are helping me out with this. I want this to be bigger than me.
[03:00] As I looked at my daughter, when she came out of her mom's womb many years ago, she really got me to be more serious. I'm still trying to figure out what my son has done.
[03:15] I know he's a very adventurous type of boy. He likes to just do his own thing and likes to play with people. Very sweet little guy.
[03:25] But my daughter was the one to tell me to get serious about life. I think this coffee thing is a part of that too, because it's one of those things where I know what I'm capable of individually. And I know that there's other people who are heavily dependent on me to do the things that I need to, mostly financially.
[03:46] But she does this thing where when she sees my face, which is like this daily, where it's squished up and I'm mad or frustrated or determined—whichever one of those three it may be—she's like, "turn that frown upside down" every time. She senses, she knows me, she knows everything. She knows my little mannerisms, she knows how I'm feeling. And she doesn't care. She just comes to you and just tells you how it is. And it's truly really cool.
[04:20] I do enjoy both of them. But it's a reflection. I think about this all the time. Whenever I have a birthday—I did have a birthday four or five months ago—it's a reflection time. Her birthday is a reflection time too. And I think about how we can grow this whole coffee thing even more.
[04:42] Because at the end of the day, that's the thing that drives this passion a lot. It's about what can I give back to you? How can I help you? And in turn, when I do that, I am actually still helping myself out.
[04:58] Like, for instance, I'm still trying to get used to light roast again. But I made this dark roast, this outcast coffee I have. It's mostly a good bit of it, robusta mixed in with whatever I need it to be. But it's dark roast. I brewed it at 180 degrees.
[05:18] It was amazing. It was sweet. It was tasty. A little buzzy. But I enjoyed it. And I think that's because of all the things that I'm doing right now, understanding about coffee, things that I put out there for you all.
[05:33] And different tips and tricks and ideas that I get from you all has been really fun and magical.
[05:41] So if I can get better with my coffee, I do hope that whatever I am saying is helping you get better with your coffee. Because that's all it's really about—us getting better with our coffee, us enjoying our coffee with others that we love.
[06:00] And yeah, she's the one who did my intro. Well, it was my old intro. I changed it to the AeroPress one because that AeroPress one was doing really well. But I do like it a lot. And it's pretty cool that now things are just moving and grooving. And it's a good time to just be happy, reflect, because I don't do that much. I know a lot of us, we don't really reflect. We don't really think about the past, what we have done, what we have accomplished.
[06:32] And I'm very guilty of that, too. I just look forward. I barely go back. I just look forward. But these moments, these times, that's more so the things that I try to understand even more about myself and about the things that I want to do. And I do hope that this is of help to you.
[06:53] I'll say this before we end off today. As you know, in life, we have people that we rock with for a long time. And we have people that we rock with for a very short time.
[07:07] Some people we may think that we are going to be with each other for a very long time. But then kind of life just happens and it doesn't happen that way. So I'm saying that to say this.
[07:20] I want to be a part of your journey, your coffee journey, as long as you will have me. And I know that's dependent on a couple of different factors. You, in particular, the way that you think that your coffee journey is going.
[07:36] Or me, as I talk about coffee, I change and I give you tips and tricks and different things that I'm doing right.
[07:44] But I want you to know that it's perfectly okay if you want to do other things, if you want to pay attention to other people.
[07:52] That's perfectly fine because at the end of the day, it's your journey and I want to be a part of it as long as you will have me.
[08:02] But do realize that I change too. I don't think I will ever give up coffee. I think it's very important that we do have this honest talk right now about letting go.
[08:16] Letting go of whatever that may mean to you at the time, it means different things to me, too, as we go through these things of life and all that good stuff, right? But I guess what I'm saying is that even though our journeys are together, they're really not. You have your own journey.
[08:36] And at times, a lot of times I'm talking to a camera, cyclops, lens or a microphone.
[08:45] Sometimes I do interact with people outside to talk about coffee. But that's far as you in between, right?
[08:54] And then I do get my moments here and there. But you either you downloading these episodes or listening or watching online.
[09:06] Those are glimpses into what you like and care about even more so. But I know that this is life.
[09:17] And things don't really happen that way most of the time. But I guess what I'm saying here before we conclude right now is that your journey is unique. Cherish it. Love it. Expand, expand, expand. Listen to me. Don't listen to me. Listen to different people. Listen to yourself.
[09:42] Because you're on that path. And it's not even so much about as people say a lot cliche, but it's so true. It's not about where the destination goes, right?
[09:55] It's what you do along in that journey. Because that destination at times gets really fuzzy. But as long as you're having really good times along that journey. Figuring things out. Talking to different people. I think those are really where the moments are.
[10:19] So cheers to you. Cheers to me. And let's keep going.
[10:28] So this is me talking on my daughter's birthday. Thinking about reflections. Thinking about life. Thinking about coffee. And I hope that you have a really good one.
