SPEAKER_10Um, listen, he's really awkward. He doesn't know what to do on camera, so we're gonna give him a lot of grace today.
SPEAKER_05And then we started telling the truth.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, no, Cody, uh, people may know you online as comedic Cody.
SPEAKER_05Yep, yes, ma'am.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I'm so excited that he's here. We got to know Cody when he made a grave mistake, huge mistake.
SPEAKER_05Well, it wasn't my fault.
SPEAKER_10And he went to a different shop other than Elite Customs.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's what happens when you when you're nice to people in your DMs and they offer uh a service for a service, and I'm like, oh, these they seem nice. And yeah, I found out you can buy Google reviews, and yes, it's not always what it seems. So now I'm just not doing anything of that nature now. But yeah, I'm glad it happened. I got to meet you guys, yeah. Unfortunately, it was awesome.
SPEAKER_10I feel like the internet did its thing. Wait, what did I miss? Nothing at all. You're doing good.

SPEAKER_05Yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_05I agree with you. I think the internet did its thing and it brought me your video on TikTok and it blossomed into something way more than my car getting fixed.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, um, I was tagged so many times in that video, and you never ever say anything bad about anybody online. No, but I feel like that was so warranted. If you don't know what we're talking about, just go back a couple few months. It's his cart.
SPEAKER_05Is that like April, maybe?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, wrap video. We say that loosely.
SPEAKER_05It got poly sprayed or whatever it's called. Yeah, plasti dipped, plasti dipped with spray paint, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, it was real bad.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it was real bad. It was real, real bad. But it's it's okay. It I mean, I was mad at first, but it like I said, it introduced me to you guys, and I love the color. It got me out of my comfort zone. I went from matte green to a sky blue, so I went from man, that guy's tough to man. I bet he got some good puss.
SPEAKER_10You know, can't tell him nothing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, can't tell me nothing about it.
SPEAKER_10He just sachets around all day.
SPEAKER_05Okay, now it's funny when I do it. Okay, you don't get to do it. It hurts when you do it. When other people do it, it hurts.
SPEAKER_10I apologize.
SPEAKER_05No, it's okay. I still I I appreciate you guys for doing it and helping me out and hooking me up. And now we all hang out all the time.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and you and Rich created, like, I think one of the most unexpected friendships.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.

SPEAKER_05It's like a great dane and a chihuahua getting the wall. That's exactly what it is. Yeah, yeah. I should give myself more problems, like a Frenchie. I'll give myself that. Okay. Ouch. Okay. Maybe a Pomeranian.

SPEAKER_05Okay, well, I was trying to think of a little bit better than a I'll give my okay, Boston Terrier.
SPEAKER_10Okay, we could go back to the ball. Like a Boston Terrier, sure. You'll your little day.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got that little face. Yeah. Like a okay. I'll tell you, like aggressive face. I like that. I'm glad I came up with that.
SPEAKER_10Eat up some ankles.
SPEAKER_05Okay, see, again, you didn't have to see that. You always we're here on middle ground, and you're like, no, I'm gonna take it here.
SPEAKER_10I did oh, that's not what I was referring to. I meant because Rich is like not a super outgoing, funny guy. He's more like the strong, silent, scary type. But then it comes out, and then you get around him, and he he really thinks he's like he's a comedian.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, he tries.
SPEAKER_06He does, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_10We love him for it though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, effort, E for effort, but no, yeah. It's um, I think it really came out when we all went golfing that day. Oh my lord. And we loosened up, and then when we all went CMA Fest really brought it to life.
SPEAKER_10Yes, that's when we Yeah, when you ditched us, when you ignored everything, and you know, I really saw it. Camera A.
SPEAKER_05Camera B. She's lying. Nobody ditched. I just had exclusive tickets to get into an event. Oh okay. Just kidding, everybody. Just kidding. That sounded cooler than it really was. I actually left that event to hang out. No, you really didn't. I didn't just go on record and say that I left that because y'all were in line.
SPEAKER_10You really didn't.
SPEAKER_05I wasn't. You didn't and just turn it a little bit. I'm making myself look like such an ass. Um, I don't mean any of this, guys.
SPEAKER_10Not and we couldn't get this one out. She was like downtown, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I love CMA fest, it's fun, but that required Nashville trip.
SPEAKER_10Absolutely not. Yeah, God didn't put a colon on my life. And you were down there all weekend. We survived one night, and I was like, Yeah, posted up the next day, hung the fuck over.
SPEAKER_05And I did it again the next day.
SPEAKER_10I can't believe it. I truly can we talk about your hidden talent, one of one of the many yeah. Okay, listen, we got drunk. That was left out on the next day. FaceTime. No, no, you know all about it. We got drunk and ended up at Whiskey River where they have the bull. And if you have if you have partied on Broadway, you know about the bull. He's famous. I've not been on the bull. Cody, he decided to coach me through this.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I try to get everybody out there.
SPEAKER_10Oh, you did send me those videos. Yeah, I think I did pretty good.

SPEAKER_05That's what it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hyped up and a little intoxicated. Because that was one of the first stops we did before we even went and played beer pong. We went and rode the bull and then started the nerd.
SPEAKER_10I think we karaoke first, and that got it going.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we did go to posties. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_10And I got that, you know.
SPEAKER_05Posties will bring out the best in all of us.
SPEAKER_10Really? The hot dogs, the the karaoke.
SPEAKER_05I forgot about the street dogs. I think I'm still recovering. I think that's what started the poop demic. Everybody thinks it's the lettuce. It's the street dogs in Nashville. It's the thing. That's where all the bacteria in the world comes from.
SPEAKER_06I agree.
SPEAKER_05Broadway.
SPEAKER_06Because we're touching everything and then we're eating them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Think about how many hands are on that railing. I don't. There's so many stairs. Alcohol. It should cancel it out.
SPEAKER_05It should, but you gotta think about it. That's a lot of stairs, a lot of railings.

SPEAKER_10But I want to take it back to little Cody. Well, Littler Cody. Sorry.
SPEAKER_05I know the exact direction we're taking this. Okay.
SPEAKER_10To hail.
SPEAKER_05Yep. And we all going quick. Yeah, let's go to Littler Cody.
SPEAKER_10No, it was my last time. I'm sorry. I'm small too.
SPEAKER_05It's not. Oh no, it's okay. I'm going to have my turn. I'm just letting you have letting you warm up. Okay.
SPEAKER_10I have to really get a running start. Yeah. You know, to jump for these. Yeah. Um, yeah, I want to talk about you as a child. Where were you born and raised?
SPEAKER_05Alta Vista, Virginia. Uh, so that's like Southern Virginia. A lot of people know where Liberty University is, Lynchburg, Virginia. So it's like 35 minutes south. So it's like Lynchburg, Rustburg, Alta Vista, Chatham, Danville, North Carolina.
SPEAKER_10Okay.
SPEAKER_05So it's like not far from North Carolina. It's like right on the border.
SPEAKER_10Okay. Almost. Would you say you were like in a rural area?
SPEAKER_05It's like we had a stoplight and we got a Walmart when I was like 10 years old. So I mean we got a part. We're on the up and up. We had a dollar general. We have a dollar general now. Oh you got that second? Yeah, yeah. So we we're categorized by the railroad tracks. So once you cross the bridge and on the other side of the McDonald's, it's when you get into the bad area. But on the other side of the McDonald's is where the school is and all the the nice area.
SPEAKER_10So it's really the McDonald's.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's the middle ground.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That's the reality. Because everybody would get into fights at the library, behind the library at the pavilion.
SPEAKER_10Oh, damn. Not the library.
SPEAKER_05Pavilion behind the library.
SPEAKER_10So take it to the gas station parking lot at a grocery store parking lot.
SPEAKER_05See, the gas station was on the good side. It was on the other side of McDonald's. So it wasn't. It was like a safe space.
SPEAKER_10Oh.
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, we didn't have all that. No.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. But there was one gas station on the other side, and that's where the lady Linda that taught us how to drive, she would pass you regardless. She and if you would literally stop at the gas station, she'd go in and buy cigarettes, come back out, and you would just drive her around while she's smoking.
SPEAKER_08We love Linda.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I remember I swear on everything. I was driving. She meets in the Win Dixie Park. Y'all remember Win Dixie? Oh, I see. So we were in the empty Win Dixie parking lot, and I went to go drive forward and I went to look back, or I went to put it in reverse and drive backwards in the parking lot to park in a parking spot. It was still in forward. I passed. Yeah. It was the cigarettes. We got her cigarettes, so she just passes you regardless. Oh. So I look around and I'm just driving forward.
SPEAKER_10And I bet she's the safe adult you find when you're out somewhere. But well, no. Miss Linda's here. Everything's gonna be fine. Yeah. That sounds oddly familiar. We didn't have a Wendyxie. We had a piggly wiggly.
SPEAKER_05But I'm sure you had a Linda.
SPEAKER_10We did.
SPEAKER_05Every town has a Linda.
SPEAKER_10Our mother, we had a Linda. So we're related to them.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, small, super small town. Uh it's a high school, middle school combined.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Wow.
SPEAKER_05And when you passed eighth grade, so when you go from middle school to high school, it's a metal bar. And they had Miss Bradley standing at the metal bar. And if you tried to cross that as an eighth grader in a ninth grade and you're not a ninth grader yet, you get yelled at and put back behind the bar.
SPEAKER_10Oh, we're not fans of her.
SPEAKER_05Oh, Miss Bradley's fine.
SPEAKER_10She's fine.
SPEAKER_05She was she was stern.
SPEAKER_10She sounds like Miss Shepherd. Did you ever make it? Surely you tried.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it took me a couple times because I was so good at sixth grade I did it twice. So my friends got to cross the bar before I did.
SPEAKER_10Oh.
SPEAKER_05But I got to them.
SPEAKER_10Uh they just crashed you notes over the bar.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, like some jail bursts. That's right. Yeah. They just flushed it down the toilet and I was on the bottom floor taking it out with a string.
SPEAKER_10Got it, guys. Beating on the railing. I love that. Yeah. I love it. I feel like small town kids, I don't know. We make it the best adults because we're we're resilient little fuckers. That's why.
SPEAKER_05Oh, we don't give up. We don't give up. Because it it makes us that more grateful when we get to a certain point in our life. It's like this is where we came from. And we take advantage of every opportunity once it's approached.
SPEAKER_10That's why you're so funny.
SPEAKER_05Small towns.
SPEAKER_10Yep.
SPEAKER_05That's what it is.
SPEAKER_10Were you raised in church?
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, we we went every Sunday until I was probably I don't know, 10, 11.
SPEAKER_10Wait, let's see if we can guess this. Baptist. Definitely not Methodist.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_10Definitely not.
SPEAKER_05I couldn't tell you.

SPEAKER_03Oh, you wasn't.
SPEAKER_05Does that make me bad enough? No. I mean, I went to a bunch with different friends, but that was when it was more like a social thing for you guys. No, I mean it was it was our day out. So we would always go to church and then we go to like crack a barrel.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05We'd go to Lynchburg and hang out after church.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, very much so.
SPEAKER_05Because it was our day to like.
SPEAKER_06He got the good experience.
SPEAKER_05Lucky bad. I'd say so.
SPEAKER_10So all right. So growing up in this small town, I mean, obviously Nashville, was that the goal for you?
SPEAKER_05No. So I didn't even think about Nashville until I was probably 20, 23, 24, right, right when I started my social media started taking off. I remember getting an apartment in Lynchburg, Virginia, right when I quit my job. And I was like, if I can make this $1,300 rent work, that was when $1,300 was a lot though in Lynchburg.
SPEAKER_07But $1300 was a lot now.
SPEAKER_05And it was like 2,000 square feet, a lot, it was huge. And I was like, if I can make this work, then I'm really gonna chase this social media stuff full time. And while I was living there, I started coming to Nashville just to go to Broadway. And I would drive down here for like literally a night at Broadway, turn around and drive back home the next day. And I was doing that like every weekend for a year. Oh god and then I said I was gonna end up coming down here and staying. So I got a house, but then met my previous relationship and moved out of Nashville back to Virginia.
SPEAKER_10So you you say when you quit your job and started social media, you actually your previous profession was not in comedy or anything.
SPEAKER_05You were No, no, no, no. It I was a so I basically did bar rescue for pharmacy. So I was a pharmacy manager and I would go around to, I don't know, we had 70 different CVSs through the state of Virginia, and I would go in with two other people, a supervisor and a tech, and we would go in and fix pharmacies that were failing and then go to the next pharmacy.
SPEAKER_10How did that happen? But yeah, what made you want to go into that? I think so. There's your secondary trauma.
SPEAKER_05So yeah, no, no joke. Anything medical. That was rough. Um I think so. My first job, I was working at Foodline. Then I worked at Journey Shoes in the mall.
SPEAKER_10I could so see you at Journeys on your force.
SPEAKER_05My biggest check ever at Journeys was from Black Friday. I made $102.
SPEAKER_10Oh, dang. My biggest check every year.
SPEAKER_05The most expensive thing I ever bought was from Journeys, and it was a pair of UG slippers that I wanted to wear to school. That was it. I don't know where else that money was going. I wasn't buying anything. I drove a mercury sable. That's a 94.
SPEAKER_10Listen, retail will suck the soul through your nose.
SPEAKER_05That's probably what inspired me to get into comedy because the whole pharmacy thing, I thought I was applying for a front register job and I got a job in the pharmacy. And then I fell in love with it because it for the first time like ever, I was so proud of myself for passing my boards and working so hard for something. Yeah. That once I got good at it, I fell in love with it. And I think that's what drove me to where I am now about being so passionate because it's like it instilled in my brain that if I want something bad enough, there's nothing that can hold me back. And nobody did it for me. Yeah. I made that happen. So once this whole social media thing took off, I was like, I was coming home from work crying because I was so upset and work just wasn't what it was supposed to be. When I fell in love with the pharmacy, I fell in love with, you know, the patient experience, the medication, the constant learning. And then it turned into almost like a political views point, especially when you started getting into I stopped working right when they started giving the COVID vaccination. So I never went through that whole political side, but it just turned into a numbers game. Like I saw techs get mad at pharmacists and purposely almost misfill medications in hopes the pharmacist would miss it during verification. And it's like, what are what are we doing, guys? Yeah.
SPEAKER_10So it's just it turned into the sharp decline of humanity.
SPEAKER_05It was, yeah, yeah, yeah. And it was just, it turned into something so bad. And for a while there, I was in charge of doing the hiring and firing. And it's like, you can't fire somebody.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You can't. No matter what they do, they're just they're gonna be fine, they're gonna stay in. So it just turned into me pulling my hair out, and I'm like, I don't love this anymore. And by the grace of God, social media took off and I didn't have to look back.
SPEAKER_10So that transition into social media, you didn't start out in comedy on social media, right? You did?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, so that's how so I was doing like a little funny stuff here and there on Facebook, Instagram, but TikTok, I was just doing sketch comedy, like playing characters, and I had I was probably on there for four months, and that first video I did a a joke about meeting a girl where she's pretty, but she has a really ugly laugh. So it was titled like when the laugh doesn't match the looks, and she was laughing like or something like that. And I remember I had 43 followers. I woke up the next morning, I had 180,000.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And this was when there was no algorithm. So when you blow up, it starts happening. And if you keep posting, every video after that is gonna go stupid. Yes. So I that happened probably in February, March. And then by August, I had a million followers.
SPEAKER_10When you woke up and saw that, what was your first thought?
SPEAKER_05Cried like a baby. I was like, there's no way, there's no way what's happening right now. There's because every this was right when everybody was lip syncing and dancing, and they were like, it's so easy to blow up on social media, you have nothing to lose. So I was like, okay, I'll try it. And there was no really sketch comedy on there, yeah. So I just tried it and then it just went crazy. But I didn't, I didn't quit my job. I was just like, this is so weird.
SPEAKER_10And then were you able to monetize at that time? No, yeah, that was before it had just like transitioned from music into TikTok.
SPEAKER_05So the moment that I actually realized that I might be able to do something with it was I was doing the live streams and I dressed up like um Bob Ross, and uh my name was Stencil Stan. And I remember I went by Dollar General and I bought hand paint and a what are they called? An easel. And I was on live stream, I had the curly hair, I was fully dressed up, and I acted like I was doing some elaborate painting. I was like blowing smoke onto it and glitter and all this other stuff. And then I would turn the poster board around. It was a hand turkey with two googly eyes. Somebody bought it for $600.
SPEAKER_06Shut up.
SPEAKER_10You watch it. I started doing you need to paint.
SPEAKER_05I started doing stencil stand stuff pretty frequently, and I would just mail off these paintings, and then I started doing merch from quotes from my videos, and I made more in 48 hours than I had seen in two years at CVS.
SPEAKER_10That is crazy.
SPEAKER_05So I slowly backed out. I started working three days a week, two days a week, one day a week, and then eventually now.
SPEAKER_10I have to know what did that feel like as you were scaling back from CVS? Terrifying.
SPEAKER_05I I remember calling my best friend at the time. He has now passed away, but I remember calling him and I was crying my eyes out like, what do I do? I worked so hard for this. I like I can't turn back if I do this. And he was like, Stop thinking about it, go on to the next thing. Yeah, just savage about it. And I literally did. I just was like, Okay, well, no turning back. If I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna go all out. And here we are.
SPEAKER_10What did your parents think during this time?
SPEAKER_05I didn't tell them for the longest time.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, I'm sure I was petrifying.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I was terrified because I mean, my dad and my grandpa, everybody was basically in the mindset of you work, you hate your job, you retire, you get it, yeah, and you deal with it. You deal with it. And I I was like, I it doesn't have to be like that. And then I remember having mom and the first official moment that they kind of found out was when I opened for jelly roll at that mud bash in North Carolina, and my mom was this was right when he came out with Save Me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So my mom was a big jelly roll fan, and she came out, he hugged her, we got to go on a tour bus and all that stuff, and that's when they were like, he's really doing this.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And I told him I quit.
SPEAKER_10That is cra wow, what a moment. So, like, was humor always a coping mechanism for you, like when life got hard and stuff?
SPEAKER_05Absolutely. For the I mean, for the longest time, I was sitting by myself at the Watch Sable in High School. I mean, and it didn't bother me. It wasn't it wasn't anything that like changed my mindset or anything like that. It was just me being particular about who I was around. Because I've always been big on protecting my peace, but it's so funny looking back about how bad we wanted to be popular, and as we get older, we're like, I don't want anybody around me. Yeah, it all comes back full circle.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, yeah. Having kids, I I I have a senior, and then we have a uh he's going into his sophomore year. And high school, well, kids have changed a lot.
SPEAKER_05They're dogs, they're dogs. Like you gotta fist fight them, bro.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, they are they keep I feel like this new generation of kids is gonna save the world. Thank God.
SPEAKER_05I think so too. I think they're making a comeback.
SPEAKER_10It's like they didn't make a dodgeball. They are girls. Yeah, my kids are like, Can we please bring back bullying?
SPEAKER_05Because we all know that sound of that dodgeball smacking somebody in the face.
SPEAKER_10No, mine will like fist fight each other.
SPEAKER_05Good. They they there needs to be more fist fighting.
SPEAKER_10They're crazy, they're insane. But they, you know, like when we were in high school, it was always like the jocks are the popular ones, and it was the name brand, this, and what do you drive? And who are you? Like your click was everything, right? And now mine are like, do not purchase anything with a name brand on it. Like if it has a logo, I'm not wearing it.
SPEAKER_05That's a thing for real.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, and they love thrift shopping, they like go out.
SPEAKER_05Okay, that's great. They would have loved shopping with my mama. We were buying fake Jordans, he wasn't even dunking the bar, he was bowling. They would love him. I had Gordons growing up.
SPEAKER_10No, they wear grandpa shoes now.
SPEAKER_05I sa loafers and glasses.
SPEAKER_10Uh the faint glasses.
SPEAKER_04What?
SPEAKER_10Oh, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_04What's happening?
SPEAKER_10When I saw my kid pull out the Velcro, I was like, oh hell Velcro, they're wearing bowling shoes to school.
SPEAKER_04Yes. Get out for real. Deadass. I need to catch up.
SPEAKER_10It's like the world, we're in backwards land.
SPEAKER_04Velcro.
SPEAKER_10What? Yeah, ours are the same age. They're going into middle school this year together. They are savage movies.
SPEAKER_04Thrift shopping and velcro shoes. Hey, we're back.
SPEAKER_10And like we're so back. Days in. I'm cool for the first time in my life. I missed the first round. But this one. I felt like we're making it. I still ain't cool. I'm still fighting that child. No, you're you're a lost cause. So so that's awesome. Like always using humor as a coping mechanism that ended up turning into your career. And so you slowly transitioned on to TikTok, but it wasn't just TikTok, it was all your social media platforms begin to grow.
SPEAKER_05So Instagram, Facebook, I've been working on for a little over a year. So that's fairly new. And then Instagram, it's probably been two years that I started working on it.
SPEAKER_10So TikTok came first. It was the original.
SPEAKER_05And then when the whole algorithm started taking off and it got hard and it wasn't even fun anymore, and it started to turn it into like one big ad. That's when I started working on Instagram, Facebook, and like YouTube.
SPEAKER_10So how did you transition into stand-up comedy though? Because it's one thing to film content in your home or with your friends, but then to go in front of a live audience, what was that like?
SPEAKER_05Um, it it honestly started so growing up, probably from when I was 16, 17 till about 22, 23, I struggled with my mental health pretty bad, was really bad into depression and anxiety disorder and all this other crap. And I was taking every medication under the sun and I was just a zombie. And I mean, I'd wake up crying and blacking out and shaking in school, and it it took over my whole life. And I think the beauty of social media is it introduced me to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people that have gone through something similar, and I got to be their outlet. And hearing so many, I mean, handwritten letters. I had a P.O. box for the longest time. I would get handwritten letters and emails and messages about people that had a similar story about almost taking their life and changing their life and doing stuff that scared them. And genuinely, all of those handwritten letters and messages from people that followed me brought me into standup because nothing scared me more than even when I was sitting in class, knowing I'm surrounded by other people freaked me out. I would start shaking, crying, throwing up, like it would make me lose my mind just being in a crowd. Yeah. So I finally, I mean, I stopped taking all of my medications. Some people do need it. I probably did, Lord knows. But I stopped taking everything, and everything that absolutely terrified me, I just started chasing it. So all of those messages and everything led me to booking my own show, calling, acting like my own manager, and booking my first tour. And I mean, I it involved tequila, but I got up on stage and my very first show was like an hour and a half. No way. The mayor came. It was in Macon, Georgia during the cherry blossom festival. Yeah, it was at the dueling piano bar, RIP.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05But yeah, 430 people stacked wall to wall. Mayor came. Apparently, I did great. Couldn't tell you a single joke I told.
SPEAKER_10Wow.
SPEAKER_05I didn't write, I just started writing in the last year.
SPEAKER_10Oh, wow. So you just winged it.
SPEAKER_05I winged it. I took my laptop. I swear I remember sitting in my living room and I Googled recording. And I just hit record and I talked for as long as I could. I listened back to it and tried to make it as funny as possible. Took it to my very first show. Whatever worked, I kept it. Whatever didn't work, I cut it out and I just took that to my next show. And by like my sixth, seventh show, I had a solid 60-minute set. So I wouldn't say I bombed that.
SPEAKER_10I love that system. That one.
SPEAKER_05It's a I did it backwards because normally you do open mics, you do, you go try little segments. So by the time you have your first 45, 60 minute set, you're prepared.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I learned a different way by talking about full full submerging and learning from there, and then going to my next show trying it. And whatever, if I tried something new that worked, I filled in the spots that didn't work from the first show, tried it at my third show.
SPEAKER_10So have you always done like the crowd work and stuff?
SPEAKER_05Just started that this year.
SPEAKER_10That's brave. A lot of people won't do crowd work.
SPEAKER_05I so I have my most fun going off the rip of just unplanned, because I have to think these people that are at the show have followed me from social media, they probably want to see the real me. And if I go up there nervous, overthinking, and doing a planned set, it's not going to feel real. And they probably want to see the real me. So I've just been doing off the hip.
SPEAKER_10Yeah. So that leads me into the other part of that question is like how much of your content is from real life, and how much is it pre-planned and that you pull from other people and other sources?
SPEAKER_05Like content like on social media.
SPEAKER_10Social media or live.
SPEAKER_05Oh now, my a lot of my stand-up just comes from experiences and life and because we have lived a weird life. But um, yeah, I mean, sure, I'll see something and get inspired, but I always try to make it relative to something that I've gone through. Because if it's a joke written by somebody else, I'm not gonna be passionate about it. That's why I can never have a writer. Because if I'm telling somebody else's story, you're gonna clearly see it on my face.
SPEAKER_10So is that like a big thing?
SPEAKER_05Having a writer for sure.
SPEAKER_10Oh, wow.
SPEAKER_05No, which I'm all for. Like I am all for the writers' groups with comedians where you tell jokes to each other that you have a premise for and they feed off of it and help you with a punchline. Love that. I could do that all day. But if somebody writes you a whole joke, no way, no way I'm gonna remember that.
SPEAKER_10I feel like that's just I'm not a comedian, but I feel like that's insincere. But again, it's like I don't know, I prefer people who write their own songs too because they sing it more passionately.
SPEAKER_05There's some incredible songwriters, yeah, yeah, and that person singing it didn't write that, did not go through that. But it is a beautiful song, and it's just teamwork at that point. So I mean it works in certain aspects, but me personally, my drive and passion would just not let me remember that joke.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, but I get that.
SPEAKER_05I mean, who knows? I'm all I mean, if it's a work together kind of joke, I'm all for it.
SPEAKER_10But yeah, you've been online long enough that you've seen all of the different mutations of social media. You have seen, you've seen influence. Do you consider yourself an influencer?
SPEAKER_05No, I ain't influence and shit.
SPEAKER_10You don't think just you're just a personality?
SPEAKER_05I don't know what I would influence. I don't know, people to influence to be a better person.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, think positively.
SPEAKER_05Sure, I'm an influencer, yeah.
SPEAKER_10Cause you I think you share enough of who you are. Like you've talked about the mental health struggles and you talk about like you're open, but you're not, I don't think you do it to a point where you you set yourself up for failure.
SPEAKER_05Where people feel like they can just come up and do and say what they want to because some people do that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10I've seen you out in the wild and you know, people recognize you. First of all, I have to say, your fans are very respectful.
SPEAKER_05They're awesome, they're so nice. I've not met one person that's just been rude about it or not. Not at all. I mean grateful for that.
SPEAKER_10And you stop and take every single picture, you sign everything, like, and they're just the coolest. So, like, what's up, man? Let me get you a dream.
SPEAKER_05I love that. I know I I would literally have none of this without them. See, none of it. So why would I not take the time to talk to them?
SPEAKER_10Yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_05Literally, they're responsible for my whole life.
SPEAKER_10Have you ever had a stalker situation?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. During, oh, for sure. Like, people that have come to shows all over the United States, and like when I started dating somebody, they posted like paragraphs on the very first picture talking about that's supposed to be me. How could you message in my significant other? Like, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's happened. Oh, it's happened. And like that's why any apartment or any house, you can't post a view from what you see and show people your view because people will show up to your house. Oh, it's not hard to people, yeah. People will piece it together and find out where you live quick. Super fast. Yeah, it's crazy.
SPEAKER_10What what was the craziest thing that you dealt with with a stalker? Or an obsessed obsessive yeah, it doesn't have to be a female stalker. Dudes can be stalkers too.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was really, I mean, that was really it, and it felt more so of just like supportive, but in the long run, it was out of hand. A little too much. Yeah, yeah. Um yeah, I haven't really the only time that I got a little, and it didn't even bother me to that point, but it would bother a lot of people. I was on the way to the beach with my family. We stopped at a restaurant and we were eating, and somebody stopped, parked their car, came in, and I mean we were in the middle of eating, and she asked for a picture at the dinner table. I didn't love it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah. That was invasive.
SPEAKER_05I got up, I took the picture and everything, and she never would know that that was uncomfortable. But that's literally the only time that anything off the wall happened.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But I also don't know what that person that was following me all over the country was doing outside of what she was doing. There could have been plenty of things that I didn't see.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_10Well, you've stayed mostly out of cancel culture. You've been able, and I've like I said, I've seen a lot of influencers you know fall into that. We're seeing it every day. How do you feel about cancel culture on social media? And what have you done to safe proof yourself from that?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's the worst. I think the only reason I knew is because I did get canceled for a while, but it's I just watch what I say because you can do everything right. And if you meet the wrong person with a large following, they're gonna turn their following against you. And unfortunately, AI is the new customer service. So if you get a mass report, you're gone for no reason.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I just try to stay on equal ground and give no option to even when people report me, they don't even AI doesn't even have anything to work off of. Gotcha. So that's what I try to do because I don't know how other people do it, but when they start roasting me, I just let them get it off their chest because I I'm thinking to myself, man, I could end you right now.
SPEAKER_10You do. I was just telling Samantha about this. You've turned into part of my nighttime routine during the week with your lives, yeah. And get all snugly and comfortable. Oh, those lives dying laughing. And you did spinning. Oh, I'm sure it's content games. I'm like, oh, why won't he just cut loose?
SPEAKER_05Oh, and you know what? If they ever came to a show, they wouldn't say a fraction of what they say on them lives because they know if I say what I want to say, I'm gone instantly on social media. But oh my gosh, I just let people go at me and I'm just thinking all the things in my head.
SPEAKER_10I've yelled at you through the screen a few times. I'm like, would you just say something?
SPEAKER_05See, and that's what everybody in the comments they already know what I'm thinking. So they say, 'I just yo, yeah, yeah, they know me. I am an open book.
SPEAKER_10Wait, do your fans have a name like Taylor Swift has Swifties?
SPEAKER_05No, it's just a big family over there. That's all I say.
SPEAKER_10We gotta maybe come up with that.
SPEAKER_05We got you. The comedic crew.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_05I didn't need to come up with something catchy.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Come up with like a sticker that they can have too.
SPEAKER_10The family name, yeah, yeah, for sure. It's gotta be your tribe. But how do you so that's something I had to teach Rich? Is like, because Rich is old school, you know, he's like, be a man if you're gonna say it, say it in my face. Like, yeah, this is how we handle things. Oh, yeah. However, I'm more like, I was raised on social media. So the comments don't bother me as much as him. So there was a while, me and Tutu were like, you're not allowed to answer any comments.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I know Rich wants to say something to all of them.
SPEAKER_10Oh, and he did for a while.

SPEAKER_10He did. How do you handle it? Like, where is it just the concept of if I do this, there's a greater price to pay, or is there something else in you?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I because before I was all for it. Like, bring me all to smoke. If you want to do something outside of social media, we can do it. But now it's just like one, people don't actually fight no more. You're not gonna get into a fist fight because if they're losing, somebody's getting popped. Yeah, so that's not fun. Yeah, and then two, it's like I worked so hard to get here. Why would I just risk it because of my ego? Yeah, but man, it crosses my mind. I'm sure some people just need their ass whooped. A little scrap. Everybody needs to once in their life. Oh, because it will humble you, it will humble you. And what happens after almost every fight? You shake hands and you're like, you got me.
SPEAKER_10Well, that's the way it should be. And I think I think the world is healing. I think we're going back to that way of life. I'm ready to swing in. We should be able to do that.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah, it should be a law where you can like just get into one fight per month in the grocery store. Somebody in front of you pisses you off. First performance, just ah, lay into them, and then that's your one.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and then the second one, you get arrested. Or a misdemeanor or something. You get charged with something.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And in a lot of states, you do have that open hand law or whatever where you can snag somebody. With an open hand, and in Texas, you can go outside and handle your business with somebody.
SPEAKER_10You know, you can still do a duel in Texas.
SPEAKER_05And I will.
SPEAKER_10I'm just saying.
SPEAKER_05On guard.
SPEAKER_04But I'll pull out a sword with this.

SPEAKER_05I love the culture. I love the people. It's so gritty and it's like family. Yeah. But you're just sitting in the living room and everybody's talking shit.
SPEAKER_10Listen, I they might also rob you. They might, but then they'll feed you. There's this Indian group.
SPEAKER_05Then they'll feed you with the stuff. Yeah, they'll feed you with groceries they bought with your cart.
SPEAKER_10That's true. That's true. The little Indian restaurant owners, they're the safest. I said, listen, he saved my life one night. We went to a train concert and I got it was train doing in New Orleans. A concert. And I drank too much. And we ended up at his restaurant, and he saved my whole existence. He gave me some kind of tea. I probably shouldn't tell you.
SPEAKER_05Train or the Indian dude? The Indian dude. Oh, I was gonna say that's cool. Train saved your life.
SPEAKER_10Listen, I I wish. They're awesome. Uh yeah. So, all right. So, what is next for Cody? You're you're touring. Are you still you're still acting as your own manager?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_10That is that still blows my girl.
SPEAKER_05I have help with booking now, though.

SPEAKER_05So they're they helped book a lot of the shows this year. Um, but yeah, I've got I'm back on tour. I started last Thursday, so I'm back officially out on the road. Got a show in Louisville on Thursday.
SPEAKER_10You're literally everywhere. It's crazy. You're on fire.
SPEAKER_05It's it's cool.
SPEAKER_10What do your like hometown friends think of this? Like, have you have they come out of the woodwork or have you lost some?
SPEAKER_05It's funny because me and Juan, like we we pay attention to everything that goes back on at home. And all of a sudden, people that have never talked to you, all of a sudden, they're your cousin. They went to school with you, they graduated with you. And my mom still works in our hometown. And people who come in talking about I went to school with Cody, I did this with Cody, and they don't realize that's my mom.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05She's like, Well, I've never heard of you or seen you in my life.
SPEAKER_10I don't remember you. I don't know. You never talked to Janet. Wait, okay, people may not know who Juan is.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's um, so Juan Thornhill graduated a year after me, and we rekindled our friendship because I used to bully him. He's not here, so I can say whatever I want to.
SPEAKER_06That's right.
SPEAKER_05Deal with him later. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh he graduated a year after me, and we are like the well, him more so than me, way more so than me. But we're like the the hometown. I call us the hometown zeros. He went into the NFL. He got into college football, got into the NFL, and we are like the the staples. We're not.
SPEAKER_10He is, but no, you're like the ones that made it out.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that's my guy.
SPEAKER_10Again, like you wouldn't point you guys out of a crowd and be like, they're best friends. Yeah, right?
SPEAKER_05Because that's the best friendships. It's like if me and Rich walk down the street.
SPEAKER_10Yes. I love I love the way that you connect with people because it feels like you you have a beacon for just good humans.
SPEAKER_05Oh, absolutely. You can point I can tell in the first 10 seconds what kind of person somebody is. Yes. And how far I need to separate myself.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05That is a blessing from the Lord Himself. I think a lot of people don't have that.
SPEAKER_10And they just always had that skill.
SPEAKER_05Yes. And that's why I've always separated myself from just crappy people.
SPEAKER_10I think that's why you have anxiety because you actually have you can feel people's energy.
SPEAKER_05You can I'm always thinking about it.
SPEAKER_10Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And my therapist always told me, nobody cares. It just means our ego is so big, we think we're taking up room in somebody else's head.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, nobody cares about you as much as you think they care about you. Bro, same. I so you were talking about coming off the medication and all of that. I dealt with a lot of trauma and did not do it the right way. I didn't go to therapy first. I tried to like shove it down and just raw it all. It just builds. And so I went to the doctor and talked about anxiety. They put me on anti-anxiety, put me in antidepressant, put me on ADHD medication. Every pill they could have given me shoved it down my throat. I was never more depressed, more anxious, more unhappy. And one day I did start therapy and I just snapped and I was like, fuck all this shit. Come cold turkey came off of it.
SPEAKER_05A whole bunch of band-aids on a busted pike.
SPEAKER_10That's right.
SPEAKER_05It's gonna, it's still gonna be leaking, it's still gonna be building up pressure, and it's gonna, those band-aids are gonna break.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, but people, the response from people, weight loss was just an outward, an outward effect of what happened on the inside. I I lost like 60 pounds. Damn. I know. But I felt better mentally, I felt better spiritually, and now I think that I can take the temperature in myself a little better. Where I'm like, okay, I'm turning a quarter corner into negative thinking.
SPEAKER_05You know your body now.
SPEAKER_10You know your body, you know your thoughts.
SPEAKER_05You know your thoughts. Yeah.
SPEAKER_10And I think that's what I see in you is you have such a good grasp on who you are, nobody can tell you who you are or about yourself.
SPEAKER_05100%.
SPEAKER_10And when you see those things in other people, you're like, oh, stay over there.
SPEAKER_05Oh yeah. Oh yeah. And I I don't think enough people spend enough time with themselves to be comfortable. And they they ignore signs and they ignore cues and and things like that. And luckily, I have spent plenty of time with myself to where I'm emotionally intelligent enough nobody could tell me who I am. Because nobody's nobody's gone through what I went through. And another thing that helped me, like I said before, is nobody got me to where I am right now. And I've never had to change into a different person or a different personality to get me here. So why would I ever change? So I know in my head I never have to be anybody else for an opportunity. If somebody reaches out for a TV show or a movie or anything, and then it requires me to do something or be something that I'm not, I can say no. And that's a great place to be in.
SPEAKER_10I love that. So, what do you do to maintain or recharge to keep yourself centered and grounded and hang around people like Juan and Rich.
SPEAKER_05They keep me humbled. They're like, you ain't shit. And I'm like, you know what? You're right. I was feeling good today. I'm glad you said something because I need to pipe the hell down. Yeah, you're right. I have I seriously don't have a ton of friends, but I when I tell you I have the best friends, like Juan's wife, even everybody just I surround myself with people that I just I feel it almost just keeps me where I am and keeps my feet on the ground. And I I think it's just a beautiful thing that I don't have to act. And there's so many people, even in comedy, they have to put on an act to be funny, and then you meet them, and it's like, man, this person's an asshole. So I get to take pride in hearing, like, oh, Cody's actually a genuinely okay person outside of comedy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So I take pride in that. And I think that's what drives me to beat the stereotype of social media influencers. So I take pride in that. I think that's what keeps me level-headed.
SPEAKER_10Yeah, you should. That's us. You absolutely should. Okay, so we're gonna we're gonna talk about your love life. Make it painless.

SPEAKER_05Oh, you know, a good one. So I've been doing this thing just to build my confidence, right? And I've been going on live streams where these, and it don't matter what they look like, I'm just practicing.

SPEAKER_05And I'll go in and I'll go, oh wow, where are you from? And they'll go, Florida. And I'm like, Like perfect. I'm on Zillow now. And they're like, whoa, that's fast. I was using one where I was like, wreck my life. That's all I would say in the videos.
SPEAKER_02That was a great one.
SPEAKER_05But there was another one that I used, but I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't really have pickup lines. A great one, if anybody needs one out there, is hey, I don't know if you have a boyfriend or a husband or whatever your situation is. I just wanted to respectfully let you know you are absolutely beautiful. I'm gonna go back over here now.
SPEAKER_10I direct, it's respectful, honest, direct, respectful. He can't whoop your ass for it because he it's all due respect. Absolutely. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_05Because I mean, if if somebody does walk over there and he's gonna be bigger than me, I'm gonna stop looking. It's none of my business.

SPEAKER_10Listen, you're such a good guy. I try to be. You really you've actually offered advice like this on your live streams too. Probably. I can give it. I just I'd come in one morning telling Smet and I was like, I that's not what I expected off of his life. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05You don't know what you're gonna get any night you tune in. But I will say, one thing that I've have gotten more, I've been more direct with how I feel towards somebody. So I'll if I'm feeling something, I'll say it.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and then just turn them off.
SPEAKER_05One thing that I have found that I loved is the roles being reversed and uh a female coming to me with that same energy of being very direct. You do girl, bully me. Yes, yes. I don't know.

I did a show at Zany's, and this girl, I I did a great set, and I went back to the back of the room to watch all the other comics and support. And I'm sitting down on one of the hot tops, and this girl comes out the bathroom and she comes up to me shooting her shot. I mean, Caitlin Clark.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I was just like, dang, I didn't know I like this.

I mean, I didn't even know I was into that. Like, she was just very direct with how she felt, and she just shot her shot. And I'm like, dang.
