Yet somewhere between childhood (when we laugh 300 times daily) and adulthood (when we average just 17 laughs), many of us transform laughter from pure joy into something more complex.
I share a deeply personal story about finding myself performing an impromptu comedy routine while visiting the very home where I experienced childhood abuse. Surrounded by the people who had hurt me most, who offered no acknowledgment or apology, I became hilarious. I had everyone in tears of laughter while I was crumbling inside. That's when I learned the painful truth: laughter can bring healing, but not if we're using it to avoid healing altogether.

Introduction to Plus One Theory
Speaker 1Welcome back to the Plus One Theory podcast. I'm your host, pam Dwyer, and if this is your very first time here, I'm so glad you found this podcast. And if a friend sent it to you, well, they must really love you, because today's episode is all about laughter, healing and joy. But before we dive in, let me quickly explain what the plus one theory is all about, Because if you're new here, this concept might be something that changes the way you see your own life. The plus one theory isn't about doing everything and then some. It's about small, intentional steps that create real, lasting change, whether in your mindset, relationships, career or personal growth. The Plus One Theory is about choosing just one extra step forward, not a giant, overwhelming leap, but an intentional movement toward the life you truly want to live. Now, before we go further, a quick disclaimer I am not a doctor, therapist or mental health professional. I speak from life experience, research and the wisdom I've gained through my own journey. All right, let's talk about something that's been on my heart a lot lately Humor. How laughter can be a powerful tool for healing, but also how sometimes we use it to hide.
Speaker 1We've all heard the phrase laughter is the best medicine, but let's break that down because it turns out it's not just an old saying. The research behind laughter's healing power is the following it lowers stress hormones. Laughter reduces cortisol, the stress hormone, and increases dopamine and serotonin, which boosts your mood. It also boosts your immune system. Studies show that laughter increases the production of antibodies and natural killer cells, helping your body fight off illness. It also increases your oxygen intake. When you laugh, your lungs expand, bringing in more oxygen, which helps circulation and brain function. It also improves your heart health. Laughter relaxes blood vessels, increasing blood flow and reducing the risk of heart disease. And it does serve as a natural pain reliever. Laughter triggers endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, making it a powerful tool for people dealing with chronic pain. Here's a fun fact On average, children laugh about 300 times a day, while adults only laugh 17 times a day.
Humor as a Defense Mechanism
Speaker 1Somewhere along the way, we stopped finding humor in the little things. Maybe it's time to change that Now. As much as I love a good laugh, there's a fine line between using humor to heal and using it to hide. Here are some signs that you might be using humor as a defense mechanism. You could be deflecting serious conversations with jokes, or making self-deprecating jokes to mask insecurities, always being the funny one to avoid dealing with your own pain, feeling uncomfortable when others express deep emotions, or using humor to make people like you so they won't leave. Does that hit home for anyone? Because it sure did for me.
Speaker 1I want to share a story that still sticks with me. I had just gone through my divorce and I was in survival mode as a single mom. It was lonely, exhausting and hard, but I hadn't really processed any of it yet. And then, for some reason, I decided to go back home to visit the very place where I had experienced the most abuse as a child. The same house, the same people and here's what shocked me the very people who had hurt me the most were sitting around, acting like we were old friends, like nothing had ever happened. No apologies, no acknowledgement, just casual conversation like everything was fine.
Speaker 1And you know what I did? I turned into a full-on stand-up comedian. I mean, I killed it. Every story I told had them in tears, laughing. I was the funniest I had ever been.
Speaker 1Maybe I missed my calling, but inside I was crumbling. I didn't know how to process being in that space. I hadn't been to therapy yet. I hadn't allowed myself to feel the pain I had buried. So instead I did what I knew best I made people laugh, because if they were laughing, they wouldn't see how broken I really was. That's when I learned a painful truth Laughter can bring healing, but not if we're using it to avoid healing.

Speaker 1So how do we find balance? How do we use humor to heal instead of hide the plus? One approach to healthy laughter is the following. Number one recognize when humor is a shield. Pause and ask yourself am I laughing because this is truly funny or because I don't want to deal with my emotions.
Speaker 1Number two let yourself be vulnerable. You don't always have to be the funny one. It's okay to let people see the real you. Number three seek out genuine joy. Find laughter in safe spaces. Laugh with joy, not as a way to escape reality. And number four allow yourself to feel it all. You can be. Funny and emotional. Healing comes from experiencing all emotions, not just the fun ones. So laughter is one of the most beautiful gifts we have, but it can't be the only tool we use to cope.
