Healthy Home Highlight: Grounding Indoors & Biohacking Your Space

Natalie Ellis Season 1
Natalie:

Hello and welcome to this week's Healthy Home Highlight. I hope you enjoyed the full length episode on grounding. How are you doing getting your feet on the earth? In my neck of the woods, it's actually snowing, but I got a text from my husband the other day saying that he was outside in the snow, barefoot, grounding himself. I was so proud, but I didn't want him to freeze his feet. Since many of us can't always be outside in direct contact with the earth, whether it's due to weather, location, or just a busy schedule, today's episode is all about indoor grounding solutions and how to optimize your space for better energy balance, reducing those EMFs, and getting deeper rest. So, let's dive in. Before we get into the actual products themselves, let's talk about hot zones, the areas in your home where electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are the strongest. In our full episode on grounding, we discussed how earthing helps create an umbrella of protection around your body. Now this reduces the impact of the EMFs. But one of the biggest sources of EMF exposure in your home right now is probably your bedroom and specifically your nightstand. Think about it. Your phone, especially if it's charging overnight, smartwatches and fitness trackers. Wireless headphones or earbuds, an alarm clock, a bedside lamp, a fan, or a humidifier. All of these emit EMFs and could be affecting your sleep and recovery overnight. So here's a few ideas on how to reduce those EMFs in your bedroom. First, declutter your nightstand. Remove any unnecessary electronics. Not only will this be beneficial for your sleep, but it will probably look better as well. Next, charge those devices in another room. I actually recommend setting up a charging station in your closet. It's close enough for convenience, but far enough away to reduce exposure while you're asleep. So, if you don't have an outlet in there an electrician can pretty easily install one. Next on the list is eliminate or replace any unnecessary electronics. If you rely on an alarm clock, consider a battery powered one or an analog one. Or if you use your phone, another benefit to charging station in your closet is you have to actually get out of bed to hit snooze or turn off your alarm. Now, beyond your bedroom, your workspace, especially if you have a laptop or use multiple monitors can also be an EMF hotspot, but the good news is grounding can help counteract this. Now, let's talk a little bit about some of these biohacking tools that can help you stay grounded indoors. If you love biohacking like I do and want to maximize benefits for your body, there are a few grounding products that can help you stay connected to the Earth's energy, even while you're indoors. So, the first one I want to talk about is grounding sheets. You literally can sleep like you're on the Earth. Grounding sheets are a little more sophisticated than the metal duct tape grid that Clint Ober, the modern founder of grounding, first experimented with on his own mattress. So, you may wonder how they work. These sheets are woven with a silver thread grid. The silver conducts energy and allows your body to stay grounded while you sleep. They connect to the round grounding port in your electrical outlet and essentially bring the Earth's charge right up to your bed. I personally use the grounding sheets from an Australian company that's called The Grounding Company. They use organic cotton and they weave these silver fibers into the organic cotton fabric and it really helps maximize the conductivity. Since I've been using these sheets, I've actually noticed deeper sleep and a lot more energy when I've been waking up in the morning. They're not as soft as my bamboo sheets, so I have been experimenting with trying to layer them underneath, and so far it seems to still provide similar benefits. Now, People question, how do you take care of these if they have a silver thread running through? And you can wash them like regular sheets, but I do recommend you use a gentle cycle, avoid bleach or fabric softeners, and try and line dry them or hang dry them in your house when possible. So another great option that is very flexible for sleep and work is a grounding pad. Now, Clint Ober, created what is called a half grounding pad. Now this is designed to either fit on half of your mattress. If only one person in a couple wants to use it, or you can place it at the foot of the bed so that both partners can connect with their legs and their feet. Now, why do I love this? It's portable, so you could travel with it. It's a great entry level grounding tool, and if your other bed partner prefers not to ground. You can still use it, but on half of the bed, this is one of Clint Ober's original designs, and you can find it along with grounding mats on Amazon. So what is a grounding mat? If you spend a lot of time sitting, whether at a desk, reading, even watching tv, a grounding mat is a great way to keep your body connected to the earth's energy. So you simply, like it sounds, you put it under your feet while you're sitting at a desk. It's really convenient, especially if you have limited mobility. You can stick it under your chair or next to your bed to help maintain contact. This is an easy, effortless way to keep your body grounded throughout the day. Now, while these products are fantastic, nothing actually beats direct contact with the earth. I highly recommend setting up an outdoor grounding area in your yard. It could be as great as a hammock in your grass. It's perfect for relaxing and getting your feet on the earth, or you could set up a seating area in your yard. So instead of placing your chairs on a concrete patio or a terrace, like a lot of people will, create an actual designated grounding space on the grass where you can really sit and unwind. And don't forget to take advantage of your lunch breaks. Find that grassy spot, kick off your shoes and soak in the grounding benefits. Now, as we wrap things up, I'll include links in the show notes for the grounding sheets for Clint Ober's mats and pads and an outlet tester for your grounding products. This helps you confirm that your electrical outlets are properly grounded, ensuring you get the full benefits from these products. So big takeaway, you don't have to wait for warm weather to get the benefits of grounding, whether you use a grounding sheet, a grounding pad, or a grounding mat, or simply just create a dedicated space that you can easily go to outdoors. You can stay connected to the Earth's natural energy all year long. I'd love to hear how your grounding journey is going, and until next time, stay grounded and keep making intentionally well choices.
