The UPside of Personal Growth
The UPside of Personal Growth
If you're tuning in, you probably care about personal growth and are on your own journey. I'd like to share a few thoughts on what it means to embark on an intentional growth journey. I believe there are four key practices that, when implemented purposefully, can help us move from where we are to where we want to be—faster and more intentionally.
The Staircase Illustration
One of my favorite illustrations, which I first heard from Smokey Garrett, is the staircase analogy. Picture a staircase in front of you, with "A" at the bottom and "B" at the top. In life and business, we're always striving to move from point A to point B—from where we are to where we want to be. However, achieving goals isn't like riding an escalator; it's about taking the stairs—one challenging step at a time.
Rory Vaden, in his book Take the Stairs, emphasizes this beautifully. But here's what we often overlook: it's not just about reaching the destination (point B); it's about transforming ourselves from who we are to who we need to become.
Often, when we achieve a goal, we realize it was less about the destination and more about the journey and who we became along the way. The question to ask yourself is, Who are you becoming in the climb?
When I focus on who I’m becoming, the challenges and discomfort of growth feel worthwhile.
Internal Wins Before External Success
Stephen Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, teaches that public victories (external successes) are always preceded by private victories (internal growth). Success begins on the inside and manifests outwardly. Similarly, John Maxwell says, "You will never change your life until you change something you do daily." It’s the small, consistent steps—day by day—that shape us into the people we are destined to become.
Four Practices for Intentional Growth
1. Consume Content Consistently
You’ve likely heard, You are what you eat. This applies to your mind as well. Feed your mind with content that inspires, challenges, and encourages you to think bigger. The key is not just consuming content but engaging with and applying it.

2. Teach What You Learn
Growth accelerates when you teach others what you’ve learned. Teaching helps you internalize lessons at a deeper level and holds you accountable. Whether it's sharing insights with your family or practicing with your pets, teaching reinforces your learning and keeps you aligned with your growth journey.
3. Embrace Change
Growth is impossible without change. By its very nature, growth requires transformation. Change can feel uncomfortable, but if we aren’t pushing past our comfort zones, we’re not truly growing. Embrace discomfort and view it as a sign of progress.
4. Spend Time Thinking
In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of stillness. Take time to pause, reflect, and ask yourself quality questions. The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your questions. Use this practice to gain clarity, overcome challenges, and move forward intentionally.
Conclusion
Personal growth is not a destination; it’s about becoming the best version of yourself—one step and one day at a time. If this episode inspired you, please share it with someone who might benefit from joining you on this journey. Remember, investing in your growth every day yields incredible returns in both your business and your life.
